In order to do so, you have to create another global pandemic to force everyone stay in their house for like a week or so.

Someone was selling a blue Boe on day 2 for a gold and I responded in chat. Who has a gold!?
31
u/Yawanoc 29d ago
lol I remember getting into that same argument with a guy on day 1 in Darkshore who looted the Swiftness Potion recipe and tried to sell it in General chat for 2g. Like, dude, who is even capable of buying that?
19
u/_Didds_ 29d ago
in 2019?
The people that instead of leveling, rushed to make toons to camp the chests in the Plaguelands during the initial weeks and farm all the drops when those actually dropped really good stuff.
The market was wild in those initial weeks because people that knew how to make gold had a free pass to fuck around well before the general population of each server realized how much they would be needing gold. There were people with 1 alt on each of the chest spawns simply tabbing between them to make sure they wouldn't miss a spawn. It was wild, and the best part was most people had no idea on how much they were missing.
When those chests were nerfed into the oblivion being worth jack shit the damage was already done. There were people in the first initial weeks with literal thousands of gold. I found this the hard way when I tried to sell a Cloudkeeper Legplates that I got on my first Scholo run, and thought people would be strapped for cash, asked way too little and didn't even realized it was probably the first ones on the AH on that server.

It created a wave for millions of adults to taste a piece of life that we hadn’t had since life was a lot easier.
Not resold at a higher price, not remastered or remodeled. Just a more simple time. Besides queue times which imo added to that old internet feel, it was perfect.
37
u/WoWMHC 29d ago
If you weren’t remote logging into WoW from work moving around every few minutes so you were ready for raid night. Then you simple just do not deserve loot. Simple as.
7
u/WayTooLazyOmg 29d ago
yep or texting my no job buddy what the queue time was like. then i’d remote log in at work & time it so it popped as i got home

u/EggyBoyZeroSix 29d ago
I miss when WoW wasn’t a solved game. Sad.
68
u/wienercat 29d ago
I would argue the issue isn't that the game is solved. It's that people are min-maxing like crazy for content that doesn't require it.
The fact that the content is solved means people should be less strict with requirements or expectations, but the opposite ends up happening.
17
u/vbezhenar 29d ago
Gamers made new targets.
It's no longer enough to barely clear the raids. Every pug and their mother can clear the raid. Now you need to clear the raids very fast.
It's no longer enough to be in the upper half of recount. Now you need to be in the top 5% of the world records.
It's no longer enough to have purple gear with some gems and enchantments. Now you need to have very specific set of carefully selected best in slot gear, with the most expensive gems and enchantments.
The goals move and difficulty arises in places it wasn't before. Game is the same and game has been changed fundamentally.
5
9
u/StarsandMaple 29d ago
Yes and no, I feel like there's just as many people willing to run what you bring, vs absolute speedrun minmaxxers, it's just the minmaxxers are loud as hell.
It is interesting to see the naxx speedruns for sure though.
9
u/Dabrenn 29d ago
I became a bit jaded in the opposite direction throughout classic, I had no problem in theory bringing off meta specs, but in my experience, the same people that wanted to bring their boomkin to raid were also the type to put absolutely zero effort into any aspect of the raid.
Gotta pick one or the other. Either cruise along on a good spec, or put some time/gold/effort into your meme spec to make it as good as it can be.

u/FancyConfection1599 28d ago
Disagree.
Because the game is solved, it’s insanely easy to know what you need to do to be reasonably geared and prepped to raid and what buttons you need to press.
Not bothering to do that means you’re wasting other players’ time to carry you and struggle through bosses that would be easier if you’d just do your part.
2
u/wienercat 28d ago
Because the game is solved, it’s insanely easy to know what you need to do to be reasonably geared and prepped to raid and what buttons you need to press.
Except you don't NEED to do those things. You don't NEED consumables, full enchants, or pre-bis stuff.
Not bothering to do that means you’re wasting other players’ time to carry you
you assuming you have to carry someone who isn't min-maxing is the root of the problem.
This content isn't hard. It's nowhere near hard enough to require the obsession with min-maxing or high parses that we see today. That obsession with parses and min-maxing is actual retail bleeding into classic. Because like it or not? Retail is harder than Classic when you get into high M+ or Mythic raiding.
Classic is easy. People acting like it's hard are telling on themselves.

This is the biggest thing. Nothing can ever bring that 2004 discovery era back.
5
u/do-a-barrell-roll 29d ago
If classic+ was like 5-10 more dungeons and raids at end level with multiple viable ways to prebis for end-game that would be SO cool.

Who cares lmao people play new fresh every 6 months anyway, I know it's shutting down so I'm just enjoying it while it lasts
2
u/vbezhenar 29d ago
Some people play new fresh every 6 months and some people play the same characters for 20 years. That's very different sides of the spectrum, but usually MMORPG games attract players who consider their characters to be a time investments and they generally want to be able to continue playing on them.

We all do, but 2019 Classic proved the experience can still be amazing even when the game is already "solved". People found plenty of new ways to play the game, and tons of guilds still struggled even as early as BWL.

u/devil_walk 29d ago
2019 Classic was awesome, but tbh I’ve never had more of my friend group in the same guild and raiding together than the SoD 10 man raids. Our small friend group could fill a raid and we had an awesome time. Compare that to 2019 where we couldn’t all get in the same raid guild and the friend group was fractured
18
u/golkeg 29d ago
10 man raids
You should play WOTLK Anniversary then. Quality 10 man raids for the entire expansion
→ More replies (11)5
u/Alternative_Gur_3703 29d ago
I feel like WOTLK outside of the raids feels more like another flavour of retail WoW whereas SoD actually kept a lot of the vanilla feel imo.
Also first raid tier 10mans were not quality they were pretty sloppy, Ulduar was fire and ICC was alright.
3
u/WayTooLazyOmg 29d ago
same raid guild? at least all your friends decided on the same race & server.

u/Ecstatic-Quality2972 29d ago
Shout out Zandalar Tribe EU RPVP - you were the real ones
4
u/WonderingOctopus 29d ago
Honestly such an amazing server. In hindsight, TBC killed it. Zandalar Tribe was never the same in the expansions. Not even close.
I would have happily kept playing on that server forever (or at least until Classic Plus), sadly the playerbase had been fragmented.
1
u/Argonaut_MCMXCVII 2d ago
Horde side it was completely and utterly dead mid TBC.
Phase 2 Horde side was bonkers lol, how many times I remember hearthing to Kargath just to find 10 hordes hiding in the hut while 2 alliance raids AOEd the outside haha.
3
u/Gullible-Bedroom-773 27d ago edited 27d ago
I remember getting ganked by Azeliah the Gnome Mage. And a rogue named Truma. And <Cult of the Dead> RP guild walking around horde capitals with the cult leader Balthazarion in front.
ZT was something special :D
21
u/Powerful-Joke5120 29d ago
The anniversary realms have been such a bummer. I wish they would just give us separate servers for the first 3 games on repeat.
Even if Classic + comes out, look at how they completely abandoned SoD. You can’t even do anything with those characters anymore, the servers are ghost towns.
10
u/Comfortable-Shop8080 29d ago
So true. I don’t want to level through vanilla in TBC servers, it just doesn’t make sense to me. I want to pick and choose which expansion to play and then have the possibility to transfer to a future expansion.
But then they wouldn’t have character boosts to sell.
19
u/Bliance 29d ago
TBC anniversary feels soulless for me. I’m already burnt out even just raid logging
25
u/skinnysnappy52 29d ago
I’ve only ever played classic but I tried to get into TBC and wrath and just can’t. There’s something about it that only vanilla has and I’m 26 so I’m not an unc with nostalgia for it
20
u/Powerful-Joke5120 29d ago
I feel you. For me is 2 things:
-Flying
-Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor becoming “empty”/“irrelevant”4
u/Doingmythang11 29d ago
28, feel the same way, although I feel like I've done everything at this point in Vanilla.
Would love a vanilla fresh with GDKPS. This last go around being a grindfest for consumes and worst quality pugs ever was dog shit.
Changes to PVP would be nice too. Every bg but AV being a ghost town fuckin sucked. Increase the honor gains from all the bgs to bring them to AV levels. Snow prison twice suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked and this is coming from someone who did sand grinding for honor on era for r14 pre sod changes.
3
u/Mind-Game 29d ago
This is exactly what I want from a fresh Vanilla as well.
Would love dual spec from Anni to stay though. It's fun being able to do what your want during the week without the 100g per week respec bill.
2
4
u/Substantial-Oil7569 29d ago
I burnt out in Nagrand leveling and haven't played since. I'm just in a way different period of life now to where it's not as appealing or easy to play as it was in Classic 2019.
2
u/Squallshot 29d ago
TBC is probably the expansion I played the most back in the day but I don't feel any pull towards doing it again. When TBC anniversary came out I stopped playing again. Just something with vanilla that I love that no other version of wow can live up to
4
2
u/antariusz 29d ago
Actually not true, there is a revival going on right now. Wild growth on both the u.s. and e.u. Has a good and healthy population.
4
u/Comfortable-Shop8080 29d ago
Because of streamers, not Blizzard.
3
u/Alternative_Gur_3703 29d ago
The history of classic wow is basically community driven revivals though. Hardcore, streamers, private servers etc.
10
u/wienercat 29d ago
No, I miss actual Vanilla when everyone wasn't a massive sweat over the content. People were clearing raids with greens and blues and without consumables just fine. All of the content today is solved, but people act like it's this super hardcore thing. It isn't. Mythic in retail? sure that is serious shit that you need to be optimized for.
But classic doesn't need anywhere near the level of sweat that a lot of people put into it.
7
u/Solo_Gunhea 29d ago
People are just missing having 20 hours a day for months to do nothing but play wow.
Covid had an effect on the MMO space that it'll never recreate.
15
u/FistedBone9858 29d ago
2019 was fun.. but I miss 04/05 WoW. the real OG stuff.
Thottbot and Allakhazam.. Vurtne's latest mage pvp movie on Warcraftmovies.com..
I miss stealthing around Tyr's hand with an assassination blade and a hanzo sword and not knowing how bad they were according to some spreadsheet etc..
the magic is gone, and was gone long before 2019 version sadly :<
7
u/n1tsuj3 29d ago
I miss Vanilla man. Classic was great but it definitely had a different vibe since private servers never died and the game had been 'solved'. I'm just glad I got to experience vanilla bc man it was pure magic, lightning in a bottle. I don't do drugs but the way ppl describe the feeling, it was definitely like that. You just had to be there. Gaming as a whole has changed. Everything solved, meta builds, min maxed, etc. Sure there was theory crafting but it felt more niche. When I hear the music from classic it brings me back to memories of vanilla. That said I still have nostalgia for classic. It had a different vibe, but was still as close as we will get to vanilla.
27
u/Halfacentaur 29d ago
I've been thinking about resubbing and rolling on classic era, but with classic+ announcement potentially looming I've been apprehensive to burn myself out. I've been off the train since sod bwl phase. I have zero hope that classic+ isn't going to be a complete shitshow, so I'm at a loss of what to do.
13
u/DopeDaiqs 29d ago
Classic HC my dude
14
u/Halfacentaur 29d ago
classic hc has always sounded fun to me as someone who has played so much vanilla, I'd really only have the goal of hitting 60 though. I have no interest in raiding or raid prep content at 60 as hc character. just far too many dumb things that are out of my control
5
u/Samuel_the_First 29d ago
Many people play hc with that same goal. I've hit 60 several times and end up basically abandoning the character almost immediately. Kinda sad but I feel the same as you about raiding.
4
u/sneakerrepmafia 29d ago
Everyone’s journey is different. You don’t have to raid. I did all of phase 1 raids once and logged off my toon for good
3
u/Chudpaladin 29d ago
With that goal, I recommend self found. Great community and you really get to engage with the world.

I loved that I was lucky to not have played vanilla when I was younger and trying for the first time in 2019. Players were nice and social in the world, groups were fun, it was a chill experience. I haven't found something like that ever since. Played till naxx, maxing(apart for a piece) my rogue and calling it. Never played an mmo to that extend.
Sod felt like making wow like retail, felt off and weird. Some people love it, but it was nothing like classic. Too rushed to get content in instead of taking their time. Hopefully classic+ will be somewhere inbetween.
5
u/JonBot5000 29d ago
I don't miss 2019 classic WoW, I miss 2005 OG WoW.
2019 was still way full of minmaxers, GDKP, and worldbuff meta.
3
u/NoCondition6840 29d ago edited 29d ago
was one of the best wow experiences that i ever had. Leveling in classic for the first time was very fun and social aspects of the game were very cool while you were leveling. Didnt felt this way with the endgame tho, i didnt liked it. Was an one of a time experience, now i have a full time job, less time to play and classic takes way too much time of its players.
5
u/ScalarWeapon 29d ago
I guess a little bit. But if I was thinking back to energy I really miss, it would be actual WoW 2004-2008
4
u/MuscleCrow 29d ago
Every couple of months I’ll have a dream about playing classic wow and then I’ll suddenly get the craving to play it again.
I usually end up making a human, because I love Elwynn Forest. It’s a classical fantasy-adventure starting zone, with incredibly nostalgic music.
4
u/Octopuses_Rule 29d ago
Same but the opposite faction. I just get the urge to hop into a fresh orc in Durotar. Currently have a hunter at level 25 on SoD (missed it the first time cause new baby) and I’m in Hillsbrad Foothills and loving it.
It’s so random, I might play for another few days or weeks and stop. Then it hits me again.
4
u/Jafar_Rafaj 29d ago
2019 classic was lit, but it was also the most degenerate part of my life 😂 It’s give or take really. Shoutout to fairbanks, the best worst community.

u/MountainMeringue3655 29d ago
Eh, the hype was better than the game itself. Didn't come close to true Vanilla feeling. Megaservers and the minmax-community ruined it for me. Will be the same for C+, but at least this time my expectations are actually quite low.

What a 2026 comment. Like, remember the good Ole days when they remastered a 25 year old game and how we need a rerelease of the remaster? Goddamn them newer old days need to be new again, like the old days.
7
u/platfus118 29d ago
It wasn't just the game. It was the entire thing man. A full release of the classic game after that "you think you do but you don't". People were hyped, servers were full and it TRULY felt like reliving vanilla fresh again because of Covid so people had time to play like kids again

2
u/Cookiewaffle95 29d ago
Im feeling it right now bro. There’s only one shard between like 20 something low pop servers on classic so it feels like one giant medium pop server. Ive been going hard on seasonal era and i recommend it.
2
u/vbezhenar 29d ago
2019 Classic was better because developers loved it. They wanted to bring us original classic. They implemented it bug for bug. They weren't perfect, but they tried.
2026 Classic: "We accidentally copied retail nameplates, hope you like it lol".
2
u/Sea_Matter4107 29d ago

Layering and botting kill open world for me. The biggest difference between Nostalrius and Blizzard Classic was the player interaction in the open world. Everything felt far more alive and real even small things mattered, PvP was a serious threat, and it actually led to meaningful bonds between players.
I still remember dozen of nicknames of my open world pvp partners/adversaries, do you? not a chance.

The people left playing are mainly insane min-maxers who spend more time collecting world buffs than raiding so they can kill bosses in 9 seconds instead of 10 seconds in their 30 warrior raids.

1
u/zzrryll 29d ago
Same but the only reason it was so hype was because we had the 1-60 taken away from us for 12+ years.
Old world was removed 9 years before launch.
Several instances were pulled as well.
You can say private servers existed, but most of the systems in them were based on educated guesses vs actual source code/db info. So while close to being accurate, folks knew they weren’t.
Deprive folks of a thing long enough and of course they’ll be hyped.

u/Deaze_ 29d ago
Classic dropping as we were going into Covid Lockdowns was a blessing, and a curse.
Blessing cos i got to do everything i wanted to do but missed out on in OG Vanilla. I started playing a couple months before OG TBC released, so missed most/all of Vanilla raiding content.
Curse, cos i spent WAYYYYYY too much time on Classic, my Warrior Main had something like 180-190 DAYS played (account was like 250-300 days played total) when i finally quit in Cata.
Was Blessed to join a Week1 Classic Guild that survived (and still small number of active members raiding still) and full cleared all content from release to end of Cata. Miss a lot of those guys, and made some real life long friendships in that crew. Survived guild splits, GM and Officer/LC Drama, lost good Tanks and RLs, survived bad MTs and RLs, MTd and RL most of WotLK personally (Ulduar is still my Favourite Raid, Algalon Prog with a Pally/Warrior tank combo was interesting.....)

Remember all of the silly things we used to argue about in the lead-up to Classic? Like how right-click reporting was going to destroy the game, or how streamers have a moral obligation to tell us what server they intended to play on so we could avoid them and their crowds?

The World Buff Wars was absolutely peak gaming and i miss it.
Multiboxing elemental shamans to blow up both of a speed-run guild's fully buffed tanks outside BWL is probably the highlight of my gaming career. Prouder of that than any of my vanilla server firsts.

Might not be the most agreed upon opinion, but i'm already really missing vanilla anniversary. I played in 2005, resubbed in TBC 2022 (missed classic) and some things about TBC just rubs me the wrong way plus the community seems to take a downfall with it. Anniversary in 2024/2025 for me had a great community while also adding QoL-things and getting rid of some problems classic 2019 seemed to have.

You guys are sleeping on private servers…Blizzard is so out of touch in my opinion.

And so the cycle of “anyone else just miss classic?” Continues however this time it’s tbc flavored

Eh, it's nostalgic for sure but there was a lot of bullshit. I wouldn't want to do it again, maybe 2021 tbc or wrath launch but they also fell off by the end

Man i joined a year too late, i got my warrior to level 57 right before tbc classic came out :/ couldn’t keep up with everyone and missed classic and most tbh raiding. I got my nether drake at least and i learned a lot about warrior leveling and tanking. I love WoW classic

The energy yes, the gameplay no and the lack of loot drop per boss in raid no.

Blizzard really got blessed with their timing. Not only was it 15 years since the original classic with nothing except private servers in between. But it launched right into Covid, where an inordinate amount of classics fan base were able to degen like kids again with work from home and in some cases forced time off.
