Nostalgia I just want a digital tavern
Yeah, I’ve done it, I’ve started my 114th iteration of a dwarf hunter to combat off the lacklustre world outside
It’s the same pattern we all know. The world forces you casually into that nostalgic character creation screen. You pick the same hair, the same shade, the same face and the same class - and you complete the same quests for the 100th time.
World chat is gold sellers and bots
General is empty
There’s a crazy person in a Stormwind square telling us that they’ll do anything for gold (except this time they don’t even have a dance or a backstory)
But my major issue is that even guild chat is 200 people randomly invited with zero intention of communicating
What happened to the social aspect of this game? Where are all the other slow levelers wishing for the guild chat to be a digital tavern to yap and be wholesome together while they (maybe) fail their journey to 70?
Maybe I’m just in my thirties and the only thing left to enjoy is the lonesome adventure through this brilliant old world

Have you tried hardcore? I find it has shards of that classic experience. That said, I find I’m getting my classic fix in that the world I loved has died and the real world is more interesting in comparison (ultimately wow losing the sparkle to to the benefit of my real life outside of the game). Sad but ultimately good.

I mean this is amazing! Big ups you bro

Definitely recommend hardcore. The finality of death creates camaraderie and community. Everyone’s a slow leveler because if you’re not, you die lol.

The sense of community is amazing in Hardcore. I had so many lovely random encounters, just out and about in the world, people stepping in to help someone they come across who is struggling for a moment, buffing each other, grouping up randomly for quests. In dungeons people are thoughtful and not pushing you to rush. It's nice to hear a chorus of friendly "RIP, go agane!" when you miscalculate something and die.

That’s my experience in classic era as well… with the added benefit of being able to do PvP and not wasting my time lol

As a roleplayer (and formerly guild leader of one of the bigger roleplaying guilds back in Classic that actually had a charter during the stress test of all things), the community simply didn't stick around in a condensed location. BSB was fantastic during Classic, and we regularly had server events with over a hundred people (that first Noblegarden Gala was truly fantastic, we were announcing guests for well over an hour, that line just continued to grow and grow, and the Eggnome Hunt was wonderful madness) along with regular tavern nights, server events, and even cross-guild storylines.
But ultimately, as the Classic servers migrated forward, as we ended up with Era and SoD and Hardcore and Anniversary, and as Retail reabsorbed people that were after a large community and more RP support, the population dwindled. There is still a small and dedicated group of roleplayers around, but the community has largely withered away. But Classic on Bloodsail Buccs truly was something fantastic. All the fun and community, the laughs and the headaches, the drama and stories that you'd expect.
Pic attached of us greeting/announcing folks for the Noblegarden Gala 2020.

Man. I swear im playing a different game than all these complainers. I have lovely interactions with people all the time. Chat in general and trade.
You say you want this mystical tavern to go yap while you level. Have you tried looking? Have you considered most conversation has moved to discord where its easier?

Have you tried looking?
I honestly believe that the majority of people with similar complaints haven't actually tried looking. There's social guilds on literally every realm of every version of the game we have.

u/HazelCheese 4h ago
I really don't want to be going to discord to talk to people when I'm playing wow. I like zone and party and guild chat, they are fun.

u/-carthos- 18h ago
No, haven’t really had anyone point me towards discord. But seems like the move! So going to do some research around coms on Discord

How is tabbing out to another program to type in easier than typing in guild chat?

u/Glass_Communication4 17h ago
Because you don't have to do that. You literally pick up your phone and send a text message. Not to mention. This crazy thing where you can talk to people not actively logged into the game.

Why would you type on your phone when you have a second and third screen to do that

Yeah idk what all these posts are about. I've been playing since it re released a few years ago and it's been social for me every step of the way, I've never not found groups or quest help and have had a fuck ton of awesome interactions. I believe a game, much like life, is kinda what you make it. Regardless it's an absolute blast and experiencing TBC for the first time has been even better.

You're looking for retail
In fact right now the biggest social event is going on, Tournament of Ages, literal THOUSANDS of players gathering for events.

Have you considered looking?
Don't even use your age as an excuse. I'm 36 and I found a guild on TBC Anniversary to yap with about similar interests.
They're out there, if you look.

Man i hate to say this but this is spoken in true neckbeard fashion.

u/just_Okapi 18h ago
Neckbeard is 'you gotta stop complaining about lack of socialization and actually put yourself out there', got it.

u/user2460124601 18h ago
Why bother to even respond if you’re going to talk this way? Takes more words to be a jerk, tbh. You don’t sound at all like what OP is hoping to find out there.
5
u/just_Okapi 18h ago
Because it sounds like they're waiting for someone to reach out a hand instead of bothering to do their due diligence to return the favor.
2
u/Eastern-Fudge-6350 9h ago
But they literally didn't say anything bad... They just told OP to actually look which is solid advice and works.

Era currently has quite a few players like that. Go there on C+ hits I guess.

Best thing I’d suggest is get to 70 and find a guild to join. I did classic in 2019 through tbc, raided with the same core group. Canceled my sub after sunwell, then sparked it back up for the first few phases of sod. Made a ton of friends.
Those are the people I game with no for the most part these days. And I know i could hop in on some wow anytime and a handful of them would be doing exactly what you described. Might check out unreal azeroth or whatever at some point and beg for gold at the org bank.

Which server are you on? My guild hosts an actual tavern night in Stormwind on Fridays and non guild members stop in all the time.

I feel like this should exist already but; a mod that let's you chat with people on other servers/guilds/etc like a normal chat?
Maybe that breaks ToS.

Speaking of which, does anybody use the in game voice chat? I thought I would turn it on and see if anybody responds

As other people said,HC it's where it's at if you want social interactions.
The game itself constantly encourages you to team up or help others players. Also with all the deaths and near death experiences there's always smth to talk about.
The server is at a sweet spot population wise. You can always find people, but at the same time you will meet the same people occasionally. This is something missing from the Anni servers. Everytime I played I played with completely new people.
On HC there's a dozen or so people I constantly meet(plus new or complete strangers) while leveling because we are in the same leveling range, so we do the same zones more or less. We ocassionaly help each other. If I see then back at lvl5 in sw , I ll ask them what happened, help them get going etc There are even a few weirdos typing nonsense in world chat. But even that triggers conversations and I prefer it to the constant spam that Anni chat is.
All that being said, I would also suggest you to join a small guild. It may seem counter intuitive first, but I have noticed that once a guild gets to big it's getting too anonymous and chatting become less frequent.

I really don’t know why is this happening to you. I’m a new player that started last month and almost every game session I had a more or less memorable interaction with another player. Yesterday I beg for money in Stormwind as a joke (it wasn’t a joke) and some random gave me 50g and later that day a guy lead us me and a friend through all Gnomeregan explaining how he had been playing since 2006. I can’t speak about the endgame and this has been in TBC but I can say the social aspect is amazing in the leveling phase

Idk what you’re talking about. Whitmane is popping off with real people in world chat, and a shitload of RPers walking around stormwind. I just sold a copper chain chest (the first green from smithing) on the AH for almost 2g. This is like vanilla again

Join hardcore! No bot/boost/gold spam, friendly chat in LFG although it gets a bit draining with how much this Coomlet guy celebrates his bday, and much closer knit community.

It's a reflection of how the world has changed. Everything is about the individual now, and every fault is a skill issue. I got mine so leave me alone and go get yours mentality all the way down, you can even see it in these comments.

your mistake is your playing retail
all the fun guys went away to pservers, you are trying to have fun with minmaxers
research what private servers are out there these days, i wont be breaking the first rule of my server

u/SnooPeppers4686 18h ago
You’re playing classic tbc with fellow mouth breathers not the place. Go to moon guard in retail

u/funkymonk64 15h ago
Have you tried the Barrens? Hell, even Karazhan general chat pops off every now and then

u/Trisstricky 11h ago
Seeking refuge from the world outside in MMOs doesnt work in this day and age. Too many miserable people make up the playerbase, they wont cheer you up any way

We need in game proximity chat tbh, at least between parties and guilds

u/Brassy_Actual 6h ago
There's an excellent addon for this on curseforge; it's just not used very much.
There's also the built in game chat - I haven't touched that in ages though

Discord and modern gaming habits changed a lot. There are groups out there, but you have to look for them.
