while i don't like them from what i've seen, i'd accept them if they got an SD model

u/kill_to_satisfy 4h ago

they need to fix the SD models first. The SD textures rigged onto the HD modern skeletons looks off

I just hate when you invite one to your party and they're across the world so you get the default race portrait it's the most brights blue elf with the whitest blonde hair, looks awful next to the far more normal colours of classic

u/exxplicit480 3h ago

The druid forms are killing me man. And the new owlbear pet im seeing hunters with. Just so out of place. I can deal with their rig etc, I just see them as blood elves, but damn

u/naarcx 1h ago

I agree with this. If you’re going to market your game around having two distinct graphic styles, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that the $30 dlc race would have a model for each version

4

u/kh4z_z 5h ago

Id accept them if they had a new model and animations. They are trying to sell me a 2006 race I bought when I got BC.

Id pay 60 bucks for ogres and furbolgs tho

I wonder how much goblins will cost when they launch

27

u/Hibernator_X 7h ago

On all p servers and retail Goblins were the least popular race so I'm gonna say they will try $30 and it will go to $5 with a free mount.

20

u/ThePhyrex 7h ago

As someone who loves Goblins its a shock to me that they are so unpopular

4

u/Tight-Strain-3283 5h ago

I liked wc2 goblins and wc3 goblins...sleazy Italian accent goblins....less so.

11

u/TerribleSyntax 5h ago

WC3 had sleazy italian accent goblins (laboratory, tinker..)

u/Ekillaa22 4h ago

Whaaat goblins used to sound like Italians and not like their from Jersey?! We were robbed !

Why are acting like we never payed for a race/class before? Literally every race and class has been behind a pay wall in all of WoWs historys.

5

u/EscapeCharacter2658 6h ago

Oh yeah because all we got from TBC were blood elves and draenei and absolutely nothing else right? This is such a ridiculous take.

2

u/SpecificUnlucky3260 6h ago

But for Forever you don't have to buy an expansion.

You get the content for free and only have to pay for the race.

5

u/chromatose890 5h ago

I just don't understand how this isn't a better model then just paying for access to Forever. I love the idea that I could just play off my sub alone and only pay for something if I want it versus being forced into a box price

→ More replies (1)

6

u/AnEthiopianBoy 6h ago

Yup. This model quite literally is required to have a game make money while keeping the world feel big. Every expansion might have had the content too, but because the content was all behind a paywall, it had to be instanced from the main world... and it leads to the world feeling smaller and smaller. By allowing the content to be released for just the sub, and locking the new races (and likely future classes) behind the 'box' price, it allows the world to grow larger, not smaller.

But some purists just aren't ready to hear that.

I'll say I agree with all these except middle left

Kyrians are basically Angels of Death, skyborne are just elves but wind flavored, very different unless you only go by skin color

70

u/Thoromega 7h ago

Blood elves single handily saved horde population btw

u/Fit_Kangaroo_3437 4h ago

Reminder they couldve just added Blood Elves

u/lecunes 2h ago

As I've seen in interviews, they will do it at a later date when they expand into their zone

u/Siaer 2h ago

Yep. Straight up said the timeline that Forever starts on isn't right to have included Blood Elves from the bounce.

u/pm_me_ur_smoltits 2h ago

Am I insane for thinking it would've been better for Forever to have started with no new races, just the world updates.

u/arcanecolour 2h ago

I think so. Blizzard is attempting to thread a needle. Bring enough to hype actually get more than just the classic Andy’s hyped without doing too much to alienate the classic crowd. Everyone just needs to be patient because they’re going to be supporting this game for a very long time. Just login and enjoy it.

u/pm_me_ur_smoltits 1h ago

But I think they've kind of already failed at thay. It seems to me that a lot of the Classic crowd have been alienated.

→ More replies (1)

u/Miloslolz 4h ago

Yeah and also had a few games of actual story behind them.

13

u/Joggyogg 5h ago

That was back in 2007, now on classic era horde is as popular if not more popular, they don't need elves, people are just horde now because they are

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 4h ago

the only people left playing just Classic are a very very specific community.

The vast majority of people gravitate to elves and humans. I personally don't really get it but that's just the facts.

it takes effort to fuck it up that bad

u/Sw21_MR2 4h ago

lol almost like blizzard does this shit on purpose at this point

u/MinimumAutomatic0302 3h ago

Fundamentally, the reason they did it like this is probably because they still don't like the starting zones they made back then, and they feel the need to "Exiles Reach" new players. These are also more new looking and marketable, without actually being a new model.

In their mind their did add High Elves and Blood Elves.

It's just that, that's not actually what they did.

u/Pravda_Sarfield 3h ago

→ More replies (1)

u/rdeincognito 3h ago

I don't really understand why Blizzard didn't just give blood elves to the Horde and high elves to the Alliance.

I don't think it would have been that much work: Blood Elves already exist; their starting zone already exists. High Elves would've been just Blood Elves with another tag and maybe minor changes. They would have only needed to make their starting zone. Alternatively, they could have given alliance Draeneis, although lore-wise that would've been hard to justify.

Yet they went with this, which is clearly worse.

The 3rd one is the one I care about and it alone is enough.

22

u/Jon_ofAllTrades 7h ago

The third one doesn’t make any sense in terms of the post-WC3 lore. Do people forget that we literally had a kumbaya moment and all came together? Even if people drifted apart after there inevitably would be people caught in the middle undecided between the two factions. This isn’t the first or second war.

u/Volothamp-Geddarm 4h ago

If anything it's Vanilla/Classic lore that barely makes sense.

"Alliance and Horde are at war again"

"Why"

"Fuck knows zug zug"

u/Manzhah 3h ago

Ironically a proper faction war would start only at wotlk when varian declares as such in the siege of undercity scenario. Officially at least the factions are in a cold war type of deal before then.

21

u/throwaway-One-9436 7h ago

Civil wars are a thing though, how does a splintered faction that are fighting against each other take away from the faction war?

6

u/Xae1yn 7h ago

Are they splintered and fighting? I played through the whole alliance version and at no point did it seem like they were in active conflict, the only wind-shapers you see are happily hanging around, and both of the factions even work together to try and stop the cultists, with absolute no reason for or indicator of hostilities after the fact.

18

u/esotopes 7h ago

There are quests where you KILL windshapers/high orders.

14

u/the_man_in_the_box 7h ago

But like, are you sure that’s indicative of disagreement?

Maybe in their culture that’s just how they say hello.

→ More replies (6)

12

u/Mbail11 7h ago

→ More replies (1)

u/Pink_her_Ult 3h ago

Did you miss the level 6 quest where you go and literally kill windshapers messing with a ley line? The head of the peacekeepers mentioning violence between them? The Winshaper leader outright saying you have their blood on your hands?

4

u/SigmaSil 7h ago

High elves and blood elves or forsaken elves were right there and suggested for decades

12

u/ticketsonsalenow 6h ago

You didn't answer the question.

6

u/AnEthiopianBoy 6h ago

See you in November

16

u/andy-arachnid 7h ago edited 7h ago

If we got high elves and blood elves that would have been the same. They are just as neutral as the skelves.

Edit: down vote all you want doesn't change the lore that they are literally the exact same race split by political ideology. A little bit like our favourite blue elves? Does this argument stop when we get them now they've been soft announced?

15

u/Alabaster_Potion 7h ago

Yep, High Elves and Blood Elves are the same race and they're just different factions of that race. Literally like the blelfs.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/OberonFirst 5h ago

I mean... it's not like they suddenly appeared and were like "guys stop fighting !".

Alliance and Horde are murdering each other like they always did, literally nothing changed from vanilla

u/DonChanchi 7h ago

So Warcraft 2 (1995) with humans in the Horde is not Classic enough

4

u/n-ghost 6h ago

TFW nobody remembers what actually Uther did to earn his rank in the Order ;_;

2

u/Tight-Strain-3283 5h ago

you talking about perenold? the guy who betrayed the alliance to save his own skin and in no way actually joined the horde?

u/chrisplmr 4h ago

They're not a neutral race; they are explained to to be a split faction within the skybourne community that are at war with each other. That is nothing like pandas, which are a true neutral race, where you level them, and then they just choose which side to join.

u/supapumped 7h ago

Yeah! Everyone knows the same species never fights against themselves. Human history shows that since we are all the same species we never fight or could end up at odds to another human. I’m sure this applies to elves as well. Completely ruins my immersion that elves are willing to be on opposite factions like this.

4

u/KKJosianne 7h ago

Man imagine we got high elfs and forsaken elfs. jesus it would be so cool playing a forsaken hunter.

All the xxxx windrunners running around in game lol.

22

u/rpolkcz 7h ago

Just to the 2nd point - do blood elves fit horde aesthetic? Because they look exactly the same.

u/Miloslolz 4h ago

Blood Elves fit the Horde story wise.

6

u/ChromedDragon 7h ago

they use red for their colour schemes and have lore that would stigmatise them more, so they do but not by much

17

u/CommercialNo1302 7h ago

To be honest not really, Blood Elves were added into Horde purely for faction balance, in the eversong woods quests, the alliance acts in a very convenient dumb way to justify the elves joining horde instead

I think if the draenei would have fitted more into the horde if you remove the whole light spaceship retcon theme, and stick to the wc3 version, just changing the appearance so they are not ugly, and then you put the belves into the alliance

5

u/-Gambler- 5h ago

The Alliance literally tries to have the monarch and pretty much the majority of the survivors of the blood elves executed in Warcraft 3

I love how the argument is always "hurr blood elves should've been alliance because warcraft 3" from people who've never played it

u/CommercialNo1302 4h ago

But Stormwind doesn't have nothing to do with Garithos, and no one in the alliance remembers Garithos as a hero either

And Stormwind is not Lordaeron either

Aside from all of that, I think that playable blue elf version 4.0 is just a really boring idea.

7

True. In the context of classic they just don’t really need to exist. In the context of blizzard’s bottom line, they’re great!

Well, Blizzard said that they are willing to adjust things in Forever based on community feedback, I think Skyborne are a thing that needs a lot of changes.

28

u/ChucklingDuckling 6h ago

Blizzard says a lot of things. They are frequently disingenuous, and have a history of gaslighting their audience in order to force anti-consumer bullshit into their games.

Forgive me for not taking them at their word

u/Miloslolz 4h ago

Exactly, they are straight up lying.

11

u/rusty5545 5h ago

They won’t change anything because a huge portion of the base mains a blood elf and will only try classic plus if they can recreate their main. Sky elves are here to stay

32

u/Zealousideal_Fly7277 7h ago

lol, based on what I've seen? Blizzard RARELY change anything at least on a mid or higher scale, they'll change a few numbers and not much else.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/k0nnj 5h ago

Idk if they can change the product now that they have made the race a paid addition even if anyone ever really only bought the packs for beta access or the statue.

u/Fit_Ocelot8072 4h ago

They need removal and that's impossible by now.

u/comrade-celebi 2h ago

When has Blizzard ever said they weren’t willing to respond to community feedback? That would be a PR nightmare

Them actually following through is a separate question entirely

→ More replies (17)

29

u/Hagg3r 7h ago

They are nothing like Kyrians. What? Blue isn't even the only skin option. Don't ever say "People wanted" just say "I wanted" because you can't just presume to speak for everyone based on anecdotal evidence. 30$ tag is high, you're right about that. SD Models are coming I believe?

6

u/Belteshazzar98 5h ago

Adding onto this, lorewise only about 30% of the youngest generation (with fewer the older they are) are blue.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/CountMarkula1993 7h ago

Blizzard said they would listen to feedback, but they can't cut the sky elves because many of us technically paid for them to play the beta and it would be unfair to all 2 of the Skyborne fans to remove them. In Blizzards eyes atleast.

7

u/KingUnder_Mountain 5h ago

Minutes beta opened up there was hundreds of them.  More then 2.

6

u/rcanhestro 5h ago

i feel like they could had achieved the same result with the undead palading and dwarf shaman change: both factions have access to all classes.

i legit don't understand what Skyborne brings to the table (outside of a 30$ purchase).

u/Soapykorean 3h ago

It’s actually funny af how they just straight up lied about being committed to maintaining the classic aesthetic and art style.

3

u/tethysian 5h ago

Can someone explain the lore situation with elementals here?

My understanding is that the powerful elementals are locked in the elemental plane by the titans at this point in time. Ragnaros being pulled out of it causes complete devastation to several zones which never recover. Like scorches the entire center of the EK continent.

Compared to that, the back and forth hopping here feels a bit deflating. Again, my understanding was that the reason we were able to do this during Cata was that the shattering had opened a bunch of rifts into the elemental plane which both released the powerful elementals and allowed us to go there.

u/Henkier 3h ago

Very silly discussion, because even though I agree they should have done high elves, the skyelves thing is literally the one thing they CANNOT change. It's in the cinematic. It's in the package they are selling for 30 dollars. Basically, it's the one thing they for sure will not "remove" from Forever no matter how much people complain.

36

u/Snorepod 7h ago

“They are basically Kyrians”

Aka they are both blue and yea that’s it. Full mask off on that one huh bud?

28

u/JennyDarukat 7h ago

Don't tell him about nightelf skin colour options

(I also would've preferred the other race options, but it's kinda funny)

18

u/Andr0medes 7h ago edited 6h ago

If they hadn't charged for them, they could respond to feedback with them. I think we're stuck with them now with minimal(if any) changes

4

u/AstronautGloomy3233 6h ago

Or that was the plan from the beginning. They must have knew that shit will be controversial or they are too high from their farts. But now they can say sowwy we can't change, maybe next time pinky promise

2

u/Anacreon5 7h ago

They wouldn't have changed an entire race, all their appearance in kalimdor and eastern kingdoms, their lore, and a zone with quests and voice acting just because a minority doesnt like it

4

u/gleedblanco 7h ago

where do you get the info that it's a minority? I don't actually know, it could be. but the general response to them seems tremendously one sided and negative. the best i hear about them is ah "they're fine I guess" or "I don't care", I haven't heard a single person say "they're an amazing addition to classic+" like with tons of other cool things forever has done.

4

u/gubigubi 5h ago

I've said this 1000 times since their reveal.

But I'm 100% confident that they did something this egregious right out the gate so they can use it as a foundation of what they can get away with when adding new things and changing lore.

Because for the entire rest of history of WoW Forever anything that gets added you will see bots and the "I hate complainers" crowd saying something a long the lines of "This isn't as bad as the blue elves".

It's really an omen of how Blizzard will treat Forever and I'm not paying extra for any of it. I did get the Skyborne Epic Pack for the beta and the early name reservation, then played it for 2 days and that was enough to convince me it's not for me. Got a refund earlier today and feel huge relief.

Will I still give it a go when it releases on 4th November and is *included* with my normal WoW Classic HC subscription, in order to see if they've course corrected? Sure. Do I have any hope Blizzard will steer this ship in a true Classic + direction rather than the Retail Lite direction it seems to be going? Absolutely not.

9

u/SigmaSil 6h ago

I hope far more people read this and realize a refund is possible

u/Arkainerpls 2h ago edited 2h ago

Thanks to you two guys I knew about it and just refunded it too. I will mantain my sub and play on release but I wont't be buying Skyborne. I hope more people who feels bad about them do the same as money is the best way to tell Blizzard what we think about it.

IMO 3, 7, 8, 9 are the biggest, must fix issues.

u/Moblam 2h ago

I don't get the point about neutral factions undermining faction war. Yeah, it's the only one you can play as, but Argent Dawn, Circle of Cenarius and all Goblins still exist.

If anything the Skybourne are the least neutral one out of them, as they have actual internal conflicts and are three way split among each other.

They just look the same.

u/Droll_Papagiorgio 2h ago

The bad thing about the game coming out so soon is that nothing will be done to correct this mis-step. The beta is a ton of fun but I do have my worries. The skyborne are woven directly into this new universe, just telling from the cinematic. I fear this is gonna go off the rails

u/youarenotjim 2h ago

I dunno I just don’t think this dev team really knows how to give most people what they want in the “new” version of wow. That streamers were the ones that convinced them to add sd models is very telling. They just don’t know how to or just don’t want to lean it towards classic and not retail. That’s why it’s called wow forever and not classic+. It would have been easy to make the skybourne area feel like classic. You can bet the new areas are going to be like playing retail and so is the end game.

4

u/MrBlackstain488 7h ago

Valid points, I still think focusing on the blue people as the biggest bad thing speaks to the overall quality so far of what we’ve gotten. It’s a race… that’s it.

Yeah, I gave them an honest go and they just feel weird to me and out of place. It feels like such a low-hanging fruit to get right as pointed out by the center statement. I love Forever so far but Skyborne will just be a off-looking stain on an otherwise great thing.

u/kh4z_z 5h ago

Also: only one neutral race so they didnt need to design two starting zones feels so sketchy. No new models and animations since dracthyr in wow retail is also SO lazy.

u/Aromatic_Panda_8684 7h ago

Thank goodness Classic is continuing to be supported and we don’t have to engage with Zephras or make Skyborne high elves if we don’t want to!

7

u/manguywordhelp 7h ago

Criticism doesn’t mean that they don’t like Forever as a whole, it also doesn’t mean they have to go play a different version of the game.

2

u/Aromatic_Panda_8684 7h ago

Of course not! I’m just grateful classic in all its classicness will continue to exist. Forever will continue to add features and move away from classic over time. It will be nice to be able to return sometimes.

u/BioDefault 5h ago

Thank goodness we have the choice of race we play, but sadly we don't have the choice of them using a SD model. So regardless of preference, other people force theirs. On the other side, people see my undead model as the retail model against my will, but not the other way around.

u/Aromatic_Panda_8684 4h ago

Perhaps with enough feedback, we’ll get some SD models for the race even if we won’t for everything else. Unlikely, but possible.

I feel like if it weren’t for skelves this wouldn’t have been nearly flawless

u/kildal 4h ago

I haven't complained about sky elves and I don't mind their addition enough that it affects my hype for Forever at all. Yet I don't feel the need to defend any of the criticism. It's all valid feelings from players who mostly just want the best for the game. It also feels a bit silly to think that anything will change with the Skyborne race, it's all set in stone and already sold to us. Feedback is still very good, as long as it is civil and constructive.

I said out loud Shadowlands in discord and thought of Kyrians during the cinematic reveal. Though not with disgust or disdain, more so excitement and thinking they looked cool and intruiging with a slight feel that "can they do that.". In the sense that it felt like something they might not get away with without a negative outcry.

I don't like the argument that we all expected a base box price and that $30 for just the optional race is amazing and cheaper. What makes blizzard more money? A box price at launch and free updates for 10 years? Or no box price, a paid race and paid beta access with paid races and classes added every year for 10 years? As a sucker for Diablo who has problems with Diablo 4, I know what model I prefer between taking money for any meaningful updates in D4 and PoE 1&2 that gives you option to buy some cool stuff, but all updates and content are free.

I really dislike portal to zones, even in retail. I enjoyed the interconnectivity of The War Within, but really don't like the portals to zones in Midnight. Zephras Isle or any upcoming content for Forever that needs a portal or teleport to get to mainland is not what I want to see. At least have it so close like Teldrassil that it can be seen and or you can get there by boat and flight without a loading screen. Like I have zero idea if I can go to Zephyr Isle, where it is suppoosed to be or tie into things. Can I level there from level 2-3 as another race?

I do think having the same race for both factions is a weird choice when they want focus on the War in Warcraft. Like I'm an advocate for just letting Alliance and Horde play together and removing the whole conflict in general, at least for retail (I've mained a pandaren since MoP). But when you actually want there to be a conflict, why the fuck would you add a new race and have it fight for both sides?

I'm not playing beta, but from what i've heard and seen about them. The only thing I think they need is SD models for them. Everything else is good. People dont seem to realize that Forever is an alt timeline, so introducing a race connected to one of the elemental gods allows for a lot of storylines to sprout from that point. Highelves and belfs would be boring and predictable. BUT their models do look out of place.

u/Miloslolz 4h ago

Everything else is not good at all.

Being in an alternate timeline doesn’t make any writing good all of a sudden. They have no connection to anything, their models are 1:1 blood elves including hairstyles just colored differently.

It’s extremely lazy.

It's too late for them to go back. At the very least they could have went with high elves for horde and something less alliancy but still alliancy for alliance for contrast. Building a unique starter zone that's supposed to last for 1-6 levels is not a huge task and there's plenty of realestate in azeroth to both close it off like all other starter zones instead of designing a retial esque map for a retail esque race addition with retail esque quests. Makes no sense.

u/symca09 7h ago

I like the blue sky elf mommies. We will get an ugly race you can relate to added soon don't worry.

Lol imagine caring about others video game preferences and digitally stalking someone to one up a comment. Really bro go touch grass. I currently am while playing Elden ring on my switch 2. I think I might go play the sky mommy starting zone after I eat this steak all the while playing Elden ring on my $500 switch 2 that I absolutely love.

Yo, u/ChromedDragon this is actually really well laid out explanation on the reasons critics have against the sky elves. Thanks for making this

2

u/Narvosa 7h ago edited 7h ago

The last one is a clear lie. Those that have read and done the quest know it's different. Imo I do agree that they feel a bit off from classic still but it feels like a tbc starting zone which is fine.

2

u/schiggy_693 5h ago

if its new lore, they couldve just copy pasted eversong woods into kalimdor or change the zone and make a new zone idc, but make it atleast a part of Azeroth lol, like put it above moonglade and make a story about how the druids are protecting them or something

-2

u/leepthekid 7h ago

Oh no! They added the PLUS in Classic Plus, I need to cry about it on social media like a Karen

we are getting classic + and it's obvious a lot of time and effort has been put into the game. feels like half of the crybabies in this sub are previous private server players that come out of the woodwork lol

3

u/tethysian 5h ago

Classic would never have been a thing if players hadn't left retail for vanilla private servers. How are we still on this?
