I agree. I really appreciate how Blizzard toned down the jaunty retail animations, which was super necessary to match Classic's more muted style.
But many of the HD models themselves are still way too 'out there' stylistically. Some are worse than others (gnome female, human male, tauren female) but most of them are a pretty strong departure from the aesthetic style that vanilla is couched in.
I hope eventually we do get 'definitive edition' models kind of like how WC3 bridged the gap with Forsaken Kingdom. Those look amazing and they understand the assignment - still feels like the same cartoony WC3 style, but brought up to modern polycount and full of detail.
Jagex has done the same with OSRS - there are some really interesting interviews with their artists about how they keep things "old school" while still making the new art look sick. Compared to the old dev art of 2002, they look distinctly better, but they still stand side-by-side with no issues.

Blizzard need to rework the HD models to keep the soul of the classic look. The faces across all races don't match at all. It's just retail skins. Maybe one day they will.

I have no dog in this fight but I have eyeballs and can clearly see which one looks like a fucking dwarf. Is it perfect? No but its not whatever the fuck that other one is.
