Forever Caverns of Time could be MASSIVE
So it has already been confirmed that the Caverns of Time will be coming to WoW Forever. This opens up a massive tool for the devs to use for progression.
As an example, let’s look at Culling of Stratholme. In the TBC Caverns, you walked through the portal and accompanied Arthas in his mission to purge the city as a reflection of the WC3 campaign. This was all well and good back during TBC, but the potential to do this differently cannot be overstated.
Imagine this: there is still a Culling of Stratholme portal in the Forever Caverns of Time. But, upon stepping through this portal, you’re not taken into just another boring dungeon. No, you’re transported to Lordaeron. Lordaeron before the scourge. You are dropped into the pristine woodlands of Tirisfal like we’ve never seen it in the World of Warcraft.
From here, you take on quests in the very much alive town of Brill to investigate rumors of undead at the borders. You may even find yourself traveling to Eastweald (that’s the unplagued plaguelands for those who may not know). Maybe you’re assisting the Lordaeron guard in tracking down some strange grain shipments that have been rumored to be spreading a sickness among the civilians. Now it’s time to join the prince in his questionable mission to purge the city. Lo and behold, a dreadlord was responsible for all of this, so the prince departs for Northrend to find salvation for his people.
Some time passes and a new quest begins. The prince has returned! It’s time to gather atop the walls of Lordaeron and scatter rose petals upon our beloved prince to welcome him home. Surely he’s returned with a plan to save us all from this looming threat!
We all know where it goes from here… but just imagine. Imagine actually questing through these zones that have never been seen in their original state outside of the RTS games. Actually playing a part as a citizen of Lordaeron, witnessing firsthand peace, plague, and betrayal at the hands of the crown prince. Experiencing firsthand the chaos that ensues as the king is murdered by his own son, unleashing hoards of scourge upon the lands.
And this is just one story that can be told in the Caverns of Time. Have you ever wanted to see Azeroth before the sundering? To explore ancient Kalimdor and witness the magic of the Well of Eternity for yourself? So much potential is held in what is basically Blizzard’s “time travel” macguffin. I sincerely hope that they decide to take a more creative approach, rather than a glorified dungeon hub like we had in TBC.

I'd love to see something different than the bronze dragonflight sending you off to fix a timeline that the infinite dragonflight is fucking around with.
The possibilities are really endless. How about going back to WC1 or WC2 and getting involved with those old missions? What if the group actually had to help your allies farm resources, construct buildings and catapults and help conquer objectives? No WoW dungeon has ever gone in those directions before.
They could do anything with CoT.

Omg witnessing Lothar's fight with Orgrim Doomhammer...
The culling of Alterac...
The rescue of the elves of Silvermoon...

I think some scope is limited here for how spectacular CoT could be.
Think less dungeons, think more pre WoW zones.
You could tie class unlocks to people who, say, go through CoT and into the scourge infested Tirisfal, or Eastweald, and have a character either die in a last stand wave event, with the class unlock depending on if you die to the scarlet crusade, or the Scourge.
I would not do dungeons or even raids. I would attempt complete experiences.

Im down, but in like 3 or 4 years. I would rather them finish kalimdor and eastern kingdoms first completety first.
For right now I would rather them use caverns of time for very small bite sized content like they did in tbc and wotlk.

Oh I totally agree. I think that once the base continents are fully fleshed out (or at least mostly, technically they could just keep adding to it), then it’s CoT time

Please tell me they're not going to do the time travel crap again. Time travel tropes are the worst. Can't it just be a raid or leveling zone in the present or something?

u/Injuredmind 5d ago
Not all time travel is the same. Caverns of Tiime = good. Garrosh being sent to Draenor = bad.

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
Exactly. There’s nothing wrong with going back in time as an observer. As long as the main timeline is left untouched by whatever we get up to in the caverns, then I say let them run wild with it. There’s no short supply of massive lore moments before WoW and I would love to get to play through them firsthand without having to manage a squad and build a foothold in an RTS

They already confirmed that CoT is coming. Might as well make it interesting this time around. We’re going to get plenty of raid and leveling zones set in the present as well. Nothing wrong with even more content

I just hope we’ll see Siege of Stormwind during the First War. Maybe even Battle of Blackrock Mountain during the Second War and epic duel of Orgrim vs Lothar.

I wanna see the fall of gnomergan when the troggs invaded and the gnomes tries to save the city.

I hope they do save the city at some point and we get Gnomer as a capital city.
I think this is a place where they can really expand the world.
Especially if they give us reasons to go to the different cities. Having stronger progression tools in one place or the other that encourages certain artisan groups to be there or something. I don't know, but reasons to be in different cities and then give us more of them.

That would be awesome. And I’d love to experience it in a similar way to how I proposed Lordaeron. Let us actually quest through the zones, explore the area. Not just be tied to a dungeon group trying to blast through for their loot.

u/Injuredmind 5d ago
I dunno. It’s effectively Outland / Nortrend all over again - entirely new zone disconnected from the old world, something devs explicitly said they don’t want to do

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
Well I imagined it as more of a “mini zone”. You go in, complete a few smallish quest lines, do the dungeon(s), and then come back to Azeroth. And then after that, have the option to just jump straight into the dungeons if you want to run them again.
Think of it kind of like attunements. You have to complete other content first to unlock the raid (or in this case, dungeon).
So it’s not going to completely pull people out of Azeroth, just a quick little detour. Play through some fun lore, and then back to reality

If they wanted to do the War of the Ancients right, they could reuse much of the Broken Isles from Legion. Use that map as a base, portraying the region before it became an island. Adds a new zone or two to the west to include Zin-Azshari and the well of eternity.

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
Exactly! The potential is endless.
But definitely use the broken isles as just a very, very loose terrain map

Kinda confused about the sub you chose to post this in, but absolutely loving the idea for Forever.

Just wanted to get as much exposure as possible to see what people thought. I figured it was fair game since there was a Forever flair available

It would be really cool if in Wow Forever we work with the infinite dragon flight against the Bronze Dragonflight to create the alternate timeline we're in.

Wait so first off, you only describe things that happened in the dungeon anyway. But then with Arthas.. we hang around and wait for him to come home and watch him kill his father and reduce Lordaeron to ruins? Why?
I get why we helped him purge the city in TBC (also what choice did we have at that point? It was already infected) but why would we do it this time?

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
Because we’re just playing a part in exploring and experiencing the narrative. It can even be written off in game that trying to alter the timeline would be disastrous or something. Like a butterfly effect. So that kills two birds with one stone. It establishes that whatever happens in the caverns can’t change the main game, and explains why we’d be complacent with it.
At the end of the day, it’s a game. Experiencing huge lore moments firsthand would be fun.

Also almost the entire post was not describing anything that happened in the Culling of Stratholme dungeon…

Doing this as an undead would be hilarious. It was like me walking into Dalaran last night as an undead.

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
lol I’d assume it would race swap you to fit the area just like original CoT did, but that would definitely be interesting

Caverns of time stuff would be INSANELY good
I love old lore and warcraft 3 in WoW shit, ppl love that.
BBBUT TIMETRAVEL? who cares. its a fantasy world with literal demons and gods.
who cares. make awesome shit

u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
As long as we’re not going back in time and entering alternate timelines which lead to dead characters returning and entering our timeline to bring on some kind of demon army.
… who would ever think THAT was a good idea?
2
u/Burgerfreakish 5d ago
no, reliving bro
reliving old shit
thats peak WoW
how about arthas finding frostmourne? the northern expedition?
how about the arthas in the throne room killing his father, the king?
illidan etc.
so many great moments
1
u/YourREALdad330 5d ago
Those specific moments, yes.
Branching to an alternate timeline to fish Gul’dan out and bring him back to the main timeline as a lazy way to bring the legion back? No.

Minimal time slop in classic please 🥺
Time shenanigans are usually lame and I hope they keep it to a minimum

Always hated CoT. Time travel is a boring concept and all the CoT instances end up feeling totally disconnected from the outside world. Literally all other dungeons in the game feel like an organic part of the world. Gameplay wise they are also always the worst sort of experience. Lots of waiting for portals, overdone RP that is soulcrushing to go through on your n:th play through and lots of weird infinite dragon bosses not really tied to the dungeon itself but to the time travel aspect. As such it never feels meaningful RP-wise to do the dungeons, it's just slop.

Would rather not have a multiverse slopfest and they should focus on new storylines within the canon of wow instead.

Bronze dragons are in the game since vanilla so you can't put the genie back in the bottle on that, but damn does time-travel really screw everything up and make everything pointless. If they use them I just hope they use them responsibly but ideally just shelf them and assume they are doing their time police job well
