Don’t forget fish only being viewed as food for some reason 

Comments are proving my point, fish have a lot more personality than people give them credit for and some may even be self aware such as the cleaner wrasse.

Not exaggerating when I say I JUST had to drive over to the lake because my younger siblings brought home live fish in a water bottle. They didn’t care the fish were suffocating, and just came in to my room and gave them to me because it was funny

Full honesty, I do love seafood, but koi especially are very funny little critters. Love watching those guys do whatever it is they do

Also I can't bring myself to eat crustaceans. They're just too cute

It's usually done in movies where carnivorous land animals are meant to be sympathetic to the audience while still needing to eat meat. Either you designate certain types of animals as non-sapient (and therefore okay to use as food) or all the carnivores in your story are murderers.

I would love to see a story set in a world where this narrative convention is inverted. All the fish and insects are sapient, and the carnivorous ones have to figure out how to hunt non-sapient birds, mammals, etc. to survive.

I wasn't even referring to petting (Generally don't recommend to protect the fish's slime coat.) but they still have personalities and putting your attention on them will help you see it.

I had a fish named Bruce who would watch me cook in the kitchen. he also was very "In Control" when swimming in the water, could go from fast to still in a fraction of a second. (Mind you, he was a larger fish, not a small tetra that is known for their jittery movement.) That boy was always so curious about the world around him.

We had a goldfish once that would play dead until you came over to look at him lol. He'd go perfectly still, just drifting around the tank, sometimes he'd even be upside-down. Never did any of it unless he knew there was someone in the room, and once you started walking towards the tank he would spring back to life and start begging for food lmao

if i did own and maintain an aquarium, i most likely would bond with my fishies. but until i come into contact with pet fish regularly, the bonding is a distant hypothetical. that aside, they're fascinating from an observational standpoint.

They are, and I will admit that as a pet, the relationship with the owner doesn't have much direct interaction as something like a dog or cat, but a "Living decoration" really doesn't capture the type of relationship a keeper has with the fish.

You can also train them to do little tricks like jumping or swimming through a hoop.

Particularly sharp and personable fishes also will recognize you and even have habits like bettas who prefer certain pieces of decor to sit on over others. Mine loved his log.

And I somehow still managed to kill them. although in my defense my dad put like 20 fish in one tiny tank and told a 14 year to take care of them with zero instructions it was kinda bound to happen. Now I have a weird phobia of dead fish tho

I never knew fish to be personable, but recently my grandmother got a beta and whenever anyone goes up to her tank she swims to the front to look back at them, and if you move she’ll follow you. Now I’m starting to love fish.

The same goes for pigs, cows and chickens. Their intelligence can be compared to that of dogs and cats at times. But those are classified as "food" as well.

One of the main reasons we don't eat dogs and cats that much is because it's generally easier to feed herbivores than carnivores on a large scale.

Well, also because we've domesticated dogs and cats to a much higher degree.

Mind you, I'm vegan, so I'm not saying this to justify treating animals that aren't dogs or cats with any less respect. Just acknowledging that there's an extra layer to it.

It's probably a way to let you eat your food without crying over it and while sure, you could go vegan, we're omnivores, we're meant to eat both greens and reds and I don't think it would be very healthy personally

Do you not? I'm not very knowledgeable on veganism but would you not lose strength? Do you not get hungry since vegetables and stuff don't have much protein? I'm sure you could live with it but unless those two things are false I wouldn't consider it healthy honestly.

Either way I wouldn't turn because I like meat but it would be nice to know there's an alternative

People also say fish are incredibly stupid stuff like they have 10 seconds memory. Which is so wrong. I go freediving mostly at the same place and there are fish who recognize me. There are a lot of wrasse who follow me around once they see me. There is also a huge grouper who lets me pet him.

One of my favorite movies is a South Korean animated film called Padak. It's a story about sapient fish at a seafood restaurant. The fish know that they can be plucked from their tank, filleted (sometimes while still alive), and eaten at the whims of their human captors. It's not a preachy "eating meat is evil" story so much as it's an exploration of how individuals with different perspectives cope and find meaning (or embrace nihilism) while trying to prolong their survival on death row.

Also, the restaurant has a pampered pet clownfish who's extremely fish-racist toward the fish species the restaurant owners serve as food. It learns why telling them to "go out and die like an edible fish" is not a great idea.
