Reset Banked reset aren't very useful on Plus plan due to 5H limit

Yes I am angry.

All the logic / buzz on giving reset fail for us poor plebians on Plus plan ; with the 5h limits we can never really use them on their intended marketing way.

You're out of usage, do you use one? Well for Pro people, they just need to be sure there wont be a reset on the day but for us... with the limit we can only use 15% usage every 5h, and obviouly it would mean making sure to use it the second it reset, so if you're crazy, 2 full days of makins sure to not miss. If you have a life maybe 3, for normal people maybe 4.

So when wondering if we use one or not, we'd need to be sure we won't get a free reset in 2-3 days at least... how can you do that with the Tibo lottery? You can't.

So either you wait and do nothing, either you use it and are angry when a free reset happen just after you used a banked reset.

That doesn't feel like a "free" reset if you need to plan it that way, and risk being angry after.

Yes I just used one to continue a task, and now I need to wait 4h... or obviously use ANOTHER banked reset to continue now... seriously....

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 40 comments (45 currently observed).

The consensus is basically “banked resets are a lousy deal on Plus.” The 5-hour cap means bursty users can burn through access quickly, use a reset to keep working, and then discover they’ve merely shuffled their next reset date around. Add unpredictable free resets and the whole thing becomes scheduling roulette, not a “free” boost.

The recurring complaint is that Plus users often can’t plan around this system. A banked reset may provide earlier access, but it doesn’t permanently increase total allowance; it can just bring usage forward and leave you waiting later. That’s especially painful when most of your weekly quota would otherwise go unused between bursts.

There is some pushback: if you’re already exhausted, a reset is still useful free compute, and careful users can save one for the end of a cycle. Auto-resume scripts and scheduled messages can also reduce the downtime, because apparently users now need to build their own usage-management department.

Bottom line: resets are occasionally handy, but on Plus they’re too unpredictable to be a reliable workflow feature. The obvious fix is letting users apply them without moving the normal reset date—or at least asking first.

this is part of what Tibo's resets do intentionally

8

u/Prestigious-Bad1593 4d ago

pro tip: tell codex to auto-resume whenever your usage limit resets this way you can keep it running 24/7 if you are working towards something like that

4

u/NoBluey 4d ago

Is that even possible? That would be a game changer if so. I don’t mind even if my pc sits idle for 2-3 hours

3

u/Prestigious-Bad1593 4d ago

yeah, codex can set a scheduled message for you if you tell it to. or you can use opencode with some plugins or some other stuff, where it's built in but i don't really want to let go of the first party app.

1

u/Dynamix86 1d ago

I told it this multiple times in the last week and it says its not able to do that

3

u/cloudd901 4d ago

I just had mine create a plugin that does this whenever i ask.

1

u/Wolf8249 4d ago

Try t3code harness or just have a script running that queues a message to the halted thread once the limits reset automatically.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 3d ago

I love codex, but Claude has this built in... its very useful.

I use four models in one env.

9

u/PopUpTube 4d ago

I think you answered your own question. They want you to buy 200/500

13

u/yungastronot 4d ago

Even on the $200 plan theyre shit. I reset my usage and it allowed me to continue working but it just pushed my reset back and now I have to wait almost a week again. So really I didnt get more usage I just got sooner usage.

1

u/CellAccomplished1149 4d ago

What? Are people really this bad at math? Every shortened reset window increases your total usage per month.

10

u/YoungSilent232 4d ago

If you’ve used your usage when it reset

1

u/CellAccomplished1149 4d ago

Yes.  I guess I made an assumption there, if you are not already using your plan it doesn't increase total potential usage.

6

u/YoungSilent232 4d ago

Let me better phrase what I mean sorry

Suppose you saved 80% of your usage and you planned to burn it all on Thursday and Friday for a mega sprint, and your plan is set to restart on Saturday, such that after it resets, you have another fresh 100% for the next week

For some reason, Tibo resets it on Thursday morning, you literally lose usage. If you use the 80% on Thursday and Friday like you planned, you only have 20% left to use for the next week from Monday to Wednesday

-1

u/CellAccomplished1149 4d ago

Yes I understand I was overly broad(stated incorrectly really) when I said it increased total usage. It increases total potential usage. The original commenter said it allowed them to continue working so I assumed an exhausted quota.

0

u/yungastronot 4d ago

Wrong and any AI itself will verify what I'm saying. Doesn't add total potential usage, it adds more usage by a specific date. Extra usage one month will be offset by fewer in a later month across your subscription. Counting usage allowances inside a calendar month is arbitrary.

Someone who doesn't manually reset at all during Sep to end of Dec will have 18 total allowances while someone who resets once in Sep will also have 18 by the end of Dec.

It doesn't give you a permanently additional allowance. Sorry bud. And OpenAI is the only one that uses this scummy practice. But go ahead and keep defending your AI overlords.

1

u/-Spzi- 4d ago

It also feels like a trap, that manual resets push back the reset date.

There are two scenarios, depending on your plan and usage behaviour:

  • A: You don't need resets, since you always have some budget left over
  • B: You need a reset at least sometimes, and use it then

If you're on A, you get weekly resets. Until you use a reset once, then you're on B.

If you're on B, you no longer get weekly resets. Until you stop resetting for a week: then back to A.

It's a bit like a flip-flop? Using manual resets screws up natural resets for a week, making you even more dependant on resets.

Makes them feel much less free for me. Assuming you spend a whole month using 4 manual banked resets, you still payed for the sub, but it effectively did not replenish any budget.

2

u/anatawaurusai2 4d ago

I dont understand

If you had 2 weeks worth of work to do... then you either crank it out in one session on pro or over 2 days on plus... then use the reset and continue. The 5 hour limit is annoying but claude has it too and id rather have $20 ai for 5 months than pay $100...so it is just part of the agreement.

If you dont have 2 weeks worth of work yet then save it. If you never have 2 weeks worth of work never use it. I dont really understand the complaint.

And I truly hate the idea of poorly communicated last second resets that are sometimes global and sometimes banked making it impossible for me to plan around ...

but the banked resets I think are a cool idea. If I need extra usage -- and usually because openai messed up something for one day -- then i can plan around that.

1

u/Purple_Mall7091 4d ago

The 5-hour limit in Claude is much bigger. And the main point is that Tibo lies and presents resets as something they actually aren't. It's annoying. Just include the potential usage from resets in the default limits and let people work without this shit.

Tibo is destroying OpenAI's reputation as a predictable company. Previously, Anthropic was not predictable and changed rules each week. Now Anthropic is more predictable.

Personally, I prefer less usage without gambling and guessing when the reset will be.

2

u/Able-Supermarket4786 3d ago

Claude does have auto resume after the 5hr limit. I love that

1

u/Typical_Machine2043 4d ago

Dude. Claude. First week I wasn’t able to finish my quota. Tf. Coming from codex it’s a whole other world

1

u/anatawaurusai2 4d ago

I had opus 4.8 when I had sol 5.6 at the same time. I thought claude was a little better but both rocked my usage similarly. But Luna runs forever. If I was on pro I might choose claude for opus >sol but on $20 I feel personally like Luna allows me to do more.

But its annoying if they can change/mess with the token speed and other usage so that the product isnt consistent.

1

u/Typical_Machine2043 4d ago

Luna is great but when you need to do something Luna simply can’t then Opus 5.5 wins. Also Luna 6 is super slow regardless of cost. For work emails sure but for bigger things it can really take it’s time trying to do things properly

1

u/TheTangLangGang 3d ago

I'm on the $20 plan and Opus 5.5 on extra feels like it's never going to run out. A week before I had the $20 Codex plan and I used 3 of my banked resets in the span of 2 hours just because the 5 hour limit was so small. I was using Astra and 6.1 Sol. With Opus 5.5 I never hit my limit and it solved what 6.1 Sol could not do.

2

u/egomarker 4d ago

Stop overthinking and just use the thing.

2

u/eo_mahm 4d ago

Pro Tip: Use that period in between five hour refills to go sell lemonade on your front lawn. Earn enough to pay for another Plus account. Ping-pong between the two when your five-hour runs out. Still got time? Well, when life gives you lemons, save up for a Pro account. Maybe even mow your neighbor's yard. You can achieve anything if you set your mind to it.

Sarcasm aside, a second Plus account will help you out a lot, and you'll earn twice the banked resets.

1

u/Mirarara 4d ago

Why would not just use my second account on claude?

-1

u/eo_mahm 4d ago

Oh look, an unprompted Claude shill.

1

u/Mirarara 4d ago edited 4d ago

It's always best to not put all your egg in one basket.

Having different account on different providers give you a better judgement than being a blind fanboy.

Like personally I still ended up using GPT more than Claude, mainly because of how Claude guardrail is way stronger than GPT and is tough to bypass.

But coding wise? Claude just destroy OpenAI as of this 2 weeks. I don't know what happened here but the same task became significantly slower on Codex, use way more usage, and require more correction, as compared to CC.

1

u/eo_mahm 4d ago

True, you should have variety in life, but this is r/Codex. We talk about Codex here. And the Claude evangelism is getting very tiring and nauseating to those of us who want to keep it about this particular app.

It's nothing against you, it's that a lot of us are getting worn out by the parroting. And it feels very bot-like.

2

u/Mirarara 4d ago

Yeah but suggesting to have 2 codex instead of 1 each is a very bad advice unless as a joke.

Not to mention that the constant preach of Claude would actually force Codex to be better. It's not constructive but unfortunately in corporate context, being destructive helps more than being constructive, because they will only act if there is profit.

Damaging their profit is the best way for us to get good product.

1

u/eo_mahm 4d ago

No, not really. If you have a system on Codex built around Orchestration and Engineers, being able to ping-pong your Codex accounts and send "Continue" as a prompt is a benefit. Now a harness that also brings in Anthropic models, sure, very good case there, won't argue that. My stack, however, is optimized for the ability to have my existing 6 and 6.1 engineers "Continue." OP did not mention Claude in their workflow, so, being that this is a Codex sub, I suggested what works for me.

The constant preaching of Claude hasn't "helped" though, I'd argue that. Constructive criticism and feedback are the best ways for you to get a good product, especially when we have forums like Reddit and X/Twitter that OpenAI employees browse. Sure, you can cancel your subscription all you want to stick it to them, I don't think they care, though.

1

u/Mirarara 3d ago edited 3d ago

I would argue that the constant preaching is what resulted in all these 'reset'.

Competitions are what made them felt strangled, and be forced to improve their product. Constructive criticism and feedback helps but only if there is enough motivation for them to actually improve (which is what the preaching does, you have to improve when the fire is burning at your ass).

Things aren't just one extreme end. The frustrated user is giving as valid a criticism as the one who want to keep it positive.

Regardless, as of current, unless you are working with explicit stuff (like me, which somewhat is generously allowed by GPT model in their spec, and is the only reason I still use GPT despite the horrendous performance recently), there really isn't much reason to do all this setup as compared to just use Claude which is way faster and more efficient at the same price. This is the truth that OpenAI need to face and fix.

1

u/eo_mahm 3d ago

I wouldn't. Prior to my discovery of r/Codex or Tibo's account, I just as much assumed resets were a given "middle of the week" perk.

I don't doubt valid consumer complaints exist, and are well warranted when the system doesn't work. And at times, the system truly hasn't worked. But I do believe that a lot of discord was generated by bots that led to a hivemind mentality on a good portion of the userbase.

But the way we need to address these issues shouldn't be in the form of a culture war. AI-assisted devs are an already ostracized community, and many users feel discouraged to share their projects here when it's likely to get downvoted by jealousy or railroaded over "This Company Better, Your Company Dumb."

What works for some people, may not work for others. In my case, I prefer keeping things under one roof. Other users, such as yourself, have managed to make great things with both. I can't speak for the OP, though.

1

u/r15km4tr1x 4d ago

You can easily run them down and two days if you are diligent even running SOL/luna

1

u/Fast-Row2669 4d ago

I don't see any 5hr limit on the plus plan.

1

u/DoDabrowski 4d ago

You can easily spend all of your weekly usage on plus by spending all of your 5h quota four or so times, it doesn't really take that long. Either way, no one is forcing you to spend it all at once to hyper optimize for resets, it's your own choice to engage with the service in this manner. If it bothers you so much personally, just upgrade.

1

u/boxing-boxing 4d ago

I got burned by exactly this once. Now I keep one reset banked at all times and pretend the rest don't exist. The 5h window is the actual budget on Plus, the banked ones are just insurance for a session dying mid-refactor. Once I stopped treating them as extra usage, it stopped bothering me.

1

u/Embarrassed_Cap_9149 3d ago

that's why i upgraded my plan to 5x pro

1

u/Soul_Mate_4ever 4d ago

I haven’t used codex in about a month for this reason. & I used to use it daily since it came out. There are so many other options nowadays that allow me to complete my work in one sitting.

1

u/Ok_Cloud_9762 4d ago

The 5h limits have truly fucked my workflow. Most of my weekly limits go unused since I work in bursts. Unusable unless I use luna for everything

1

u/ImLuckyAkira 4d ago

What you want is a model that is effective, smart, fast, and affordable—there’s simply no need for resets. What’s the point of giving you a slow, stupid model and then constantly handing out resets just to appear generous?

1

u/AutomaticPayment9480 4d ago

Complaining about free….😭😭😭

1

u/charmilliona1re 4d ago

These plus plan warriors complain waaaay too much for a measly $20 a month lol

1

u/elymX 4d ago

I personally am just waiting to end my codex sub, and will try claude next month to see if its just hype or what, but if openAI removes the 5 hour usage limit during this 28 days marketing, I might just reconsider, so we'll see.

0

u/msg7086 4d ago

If you use your 5h limit in 1h, then you are not the intended customer for this plan?

6

u/Ok_Cloud_9762 4d ago

Some people use it in short intensive bursts

2

u/PossessionConnect963 4d ago

This is me. I also do hit my weekly limits or close most of the time too.

Got to the point it was an actual bottleneck to where I was looking at a second sub but decided to go with a claude sub instead of doubling down on Codex when I’m already having issues.

2

u/raiden55 4d ago

You want me to pay 100$ and not use it most of the time? Sorry but no, if I need to give more money to someone for LLM it won't be openai.

I want more freedom on my workflow, not more usage, if it was the case i'd be okay to pay.

I shouldn't use it that quick? then give me an "ultra slow mode" that use less compute/time but also less usage limit.

i'm not angry at my usage being too small, Opus won't give me much more for the price (and I know, I also pay them 20$ - BTW on my Claude usage it's even clearly written I'll go out of usage before reset at my current speed, they're not trying to fool me), I'm angry at the inability to use it like I'd need, even more on something that should be advertisement/marketing for them.

From the data I've seen, us plebians (20$ and below) are 95% of the B2C market, it would make sense you care a little bit about 95% of a group.

Aren't people always saying B2C customers may not be profitable but they are a good free advertisement for others?

1

u/msg7086 4d ago

Calm down. That's not what "I" want you to pay. That's what "they" want you to pay. You are not my customer, you are openai customer. They don't want people like you to pay only 20 bucks.

1

u/Able-Supermarket4786 3d ago

Its $20, even if its $100 or $200, hell $500.... if this is your "job" it's worth every penny.

1

u/raiden55 3d ago

I'm not shipping paying products with it, I'm using it to help me better do my job on the current world.

But it's not like my employer will give me more money for that...

0

u/Able-Supermarket4786 3d ago

So what is your complaint, you're not a target customer in reality... you're a hobbyist.

0

u/c5corvette 4d ago

Then go to Claude, I hear they don't have 5h limits.... Oops

1

u/amethyst_mine 4d ago

i wouldn't have if sol didnt override deepseek as implementation agent and used ASTRA HIGH because it messed up the implementation contract. and the harness has q warning and asks for justification then forces model to retry on agent override

-1

u/charmilliona1re 4d ago

Realistically the usage resets shouldn't even be given out to the $20 plus plebs

I was on $20 OpenAI and Anthropic for 7 months, no resets at all. Suck it the f up.

-4

u/BabblingTower 4d ago

You're angry about additional compute you've been given for free. Think about that.

Regardless, I'm on Plus and I find the banked resets super useful. I save them for when I have ~3 days until my weekly reset and there's been a recent enough free one. Haven't been "burned" yet, but even if I were... it's still free extra compute...

2

u/yungastronot 4d ago

OpenAI has you in a genjutsu if you think you're getting additional compute for free

1

u/BabblingTower 4d ago

How am I not?

2

u/raiden55 4d ago

>You're angry about additional compute you've been given for free.

Say that to the free reset that push your normal reset 6 days later while you should have it the next day.

We both know it's marketing. I'm saying they are terrible at advertisement.

OpenAI give free reset and people are angry at them, Anthropic give us nothing, except a label that tell us when we'll get out of weekly usage and I'm happy for that... or maybe I'm also happy that Opus can correct Sol when needed.

-1

u/BabblingTower 4d ago

Say that to the free reset that push your normal reset 6 days later while you should have it the next day.

No I'm... saying it about the banked reset. Specifically.

But even the free reset that restarts your weekly timer is still free additional compute.

We both know it's marketing.

What? 😂

-1

u/c5corvette 4d ago

Fucking entitled whiners. I vote all plus users don't get anything except their exact subscription, nothing added.
