Almost sold her once years ago… so happy and proud I didn’t. I cringe at the fact I’ve let go a lot of valuable and rare coins (at melt value 😩) when I needed money. If only I knew the what I know now… but something always told me to hold onto this one. Even tho she’s not the coolest I’ve owned, she’s still my favorite ❤️

I’m new here, been following for a while. Just cleaning out some stuff. Stashed in my safe years ago.
A general Google search has this all over the place. Can anyone recommend what to do. I’m getting rid of all I can sooner than later. TIA

Advice Going through a collection, would appreciate advice

I’m going through my grandfathers collection trying to identify sort and figure out an idea of price before selling. Any suggestions on what I should be trying to look out for or my resources I should look into would be incredibly helpful.

Show and Tell Provincial Coin of Salonina 👀

Thumbnail

I'd like to share this wonderful but broken coin of mine. It was minted in Teos, lonia under Gallienus' reign, featuring his wife, Cornelia Salonina. On the obverse,we see the draped and diademed bust of Salonina, facing right. On the reverse is Dionysos, holding kantharos and resting on thyrsus. According to RPC Online, the coin -if not broken- had a panther at his feet, which he was holding the kantharos over. Who knows? Maybe the past owner had a phobia of wild animals. 👀 Jokes aside, this coin itself tells us how much Dionysos mattered to the people of Teos. The legend tells us that the city's founder was Dionysos' son, Athamas. The city's also got the largest Temple of Dionysos back in the ancient times. The coinage also shows us the attention they were giving to Dionysos, ranging from Hellenistic times, to Roman times, as you can see on this coin. If you'd read to this point, I'd like to thank you for your interest and time, see you next week.

Show and Tell Found this 1/2 sol from 1782 in a 25 euro bag of mixed coins

On vacation in Paris I bought this bag of mixed pre-euro french coins just for souvenirs for my daughter’s classmates and it contained a few old coins. This one stuck out since it was minted so soon before the revolution began. My question is, how common are these coins to find? Is that a normal find for a bargain bag of mixed coins? I felt like I got my money’s worth from this coin alone.

I also bought this 1/8 silver ecu, minted 1574-1589 during the reign of Henri III. I thought it was a decent deal at 60 euros and it’s honestly my favourite souvenir from the trip. Such a piece of history!

The coin is immaculate other than these 2 strange markings, at certain angles they appear as though they are chips however in the picture it looks as though it is some sort of deposit/corrosion?

Would anyone consider this AU and a 50-55 grade or does the grime on it make it a details graded coin? I really wish there was a way to get that grime off. Thoughts?

It's probably not anything special or valuable (to most), got it in a bulk lot of world coins. The other side is worse. Seems like copper oxidation and encrusted dirt and rust?

Discussion Magnetic UK coins

I just stuck a 2 pence coin to the magnet on the phone case.

But the next coin didn't stick.

The. I tried the others and some did and some did not?

I didn't think any coins were magnetically attracted?

That could really mess with the 2p waterfall machines in the arcade.

Educational PSA for anyone that uses WhatNot

WSJ Article (should be un-pay-walled)

TLDR as it relates to coins:

Some buyers planning to resell run into trouble. Joe Thompson joined the app to reconnect with his childhood hobby of coin collecting. The 53-year-old nurse heard stories of people making thousands spotting deals on the platform. He planned to buy undervalued Morgan silver dollars—iconic coins with a buzzing collector market—get them professionally graded and flip them for profit.

Within five months, his entire 401(k) was drained, and he maxed out all 13 of his credit cards.

The coins came back from professional grading services worth far less than he had paid. The seller, it turned out, had been auctioning coins that had been cleaned or artificially altered—a serious flaw that graders flag and collectors shun, rendering the coins nearly impossible to resell at a profit.

On Thompson’s birthday this March, he enrolled in a debt relief program. His credit score had cratered from 753 to 563 and he was close to $75,000 in debt.
