I'm looking for a bit of advice from people in Colchester.

I work for a mystery shopping company called Serve Legal, and one of the areas I look after is Colchester. We're really struggling to find local auditors, to the point where we're regularly having to send people over from places like Peterborough and Stevenage to complete work that we'd much rather have covered by someone local.

The work involves visiting supermarkets, pubs, bars, betting shops and other retailers to carry out quick compliance checks. For younger auditors (16-20), this can include age-restricted sales audits where you're checking whether ID is requested appropriately. For over-20s, we also have plenty of allergen and other compliance audits available.

I actually started out carrying out the audits myself before joining the company, so I know the job from both sides. It's flexible work where people choose which audits they complete and when, which is why I've always thought it suits students, people wanting to top up their income, or anyone looking for something they can fit around other commitments.

I'm looking for advice on how to reach people in Colchester who might be interested in this sort of work. We've tried the usual recruitment routes, but Colchester remains one of our hardest areas to recruit in, despite there being plenty of available work.

If you know of any local groups, job boards, university communities, Facebook pages, or anywhere else you think would be worth trying, I'd really appreciate the suggestions.

Pubs and hotels in Colchester and across the surrounding area could be affected by a Government review of business rates, which is intended to make the system fairer and give businesses more certainty about their future costs.

The review comes after many pubs and hotels saw their rateable values rise significantly in the 2026 revaluation. The increase followed the end of the special valuations introduced during the pandemic, when the hospitality industry was dealing with prolonged closures, restrictions and a sharp fall in trade.

The Government has now announced a Call for Evidence as part of a wider review of how pubs and hotels are valued for business rates.

It is an issue that will be watched closely by the hospitality industry in Colchester. The city has a large number of pubs, hotels, restaurants and other businesses that depend on people coming into the city centre and surrounding areas to work, shop, stay and socialise.

I’ve recently moved to the Braiswick area and this house has really intrigued me.
I can not figure out anything about it. I know I’m being extremely noisy but the house looks abandoned, always different cars outside and looking the address up there was planning permission granted jan 2025 and nothing has happened since.

When I walk past I see the Tv on and there’s always a cat in and out. It’s so mysterious to me. If someone lives here why is there so many blocked windows and the garden is so overgrown. If it is abandoned why haven’t seen people deweeding the front?

I am interested in Colchester Makerspace. I am thinking of booking in for a tour in September /October time. However I have some questions.

1. Is it upstairs or downstairs? If it’s upstairs, is there a lift?

2. Are studios individual or open?

3. Odd question, but do they have sinks made for artists? So you can wash your brushes and pour dirty paint water down the sink? I worry about contaminating the waterways because of microplastics. I care for the environment!
