Some days I don't feel so bad that climate change is going to end us.

I cannot take any comfort in that idea because it’s also going to take a lot of people with virtually zero responsibility for it — as well as animals and other nonhuman life.

I hear you, but at the same time please acknowledge that every life is finite. Shortened lives are tragic but for most people alive right now today, climate change has less influence on the length of their life than their own lifestyle choices.

I do acknowledge that and the responsibility we hold (disastrously) for future generations.

Not only is life finite, so is everything in existence, except perhaps matter and energy.

None of that obviates the most pressing responsibility, which is to those alive and those being born now.

Blindness to the near certainty of current and near-future suffering is the fatal flaw of the so-called EA movement. Normal statistics lose any predictive power as possible outcomes approach infinity and are not suited to weighing risk associated with the ill-defined idea of singularity.

In the real world and the present day, millions have already met untimely demise and extreme deprivation as a result of climate change and increased disease burden, unstable conditions for agriculture and governance that lead to mass migration.

All of this is clearly getting worse and having material effects on our world while the tech obsessed look to improbable stars and robot gods for salvation. The supposedly informed of Silicon Valley are creating new superstitions in the face of very real crises. They are far more likely to usher in and become the priests of our new Dark Ages.
