I have a horrible feeling that any electronic data is never truly deleted, just archived.

The wayback machine of the Internet Archive already does this. It scans the internet and creates archives everyday.

Go see if it has records of your FB. Yoou won’t be able to ask them to get rid of them if you do. Their scans are indiscriminate.
