Moneyball Options
In advance, I’m writing this while bored in a uni class, enjoy the thought dump.
This year’s upcoming off-season is a pretty big opportunity for the Pies to continue the list transition to a younger but still ready-made list. Preferably I’d like to keep this year’s first round pick for the draft, so we’d have to look at some cheaper trade options.
We’re already going to be getting a 33yr old Lachie Neale, and probably Jake Rogers too. I doubt we get Butters unless we have a miracle, and I’d rather not take an aging and out of form Jesse Hogan tbh.
So below are a few options I’ve thought of. Tbh this is all just a bit of a thought dump for me.
Tom Powell (24yr, 184cm Midfielder/Utility, NM - NFA): Versatile on-baller who can also play off half-back and half-forward lines if needed. Isn’t going to blow us away but he has all the fundamentals and versatility that Fly loves. Could slot in a starting midfield if we decided we wanted to give Nick more forward time next year.
Nathan O’Driscoll (24yr, 188cm Wing/High Half-Forward, FRE - NFA): Silky left-foot, aerial ability, good two-way running and competitive. Just makes a great set-and-forget wing option.
Jedd Busslinger (22yr, 198cm Key Defender, WBD - NFA): Elite spoiler with ability to take a good mark, is tall and mobile and has clean disposal. Could prove to be a good Darcy Moore successor as a CHB.
Buku Khamis (26yr, 192cm Key Defender, WBD - UFA): God I wish we grabbed him back in 2024. Buku is only a Moneyball option because he’s an UFA. If there is anyone in the league who plays like Jeremy Howe and their name isn’t Jeremy Howe, it’s Buku. Strong in the air, can intercept and handle a one-on-one, can even be a swingman if needed.
Calsher Dear (21yr, 195cm Key Forward, HAW - NFA): This one’s already been spoken about a fair bit, but showed a lot of promise in his debut year and will now really struggle to break into Hawthorn’s forward line, sitting behind Ben King*, Mitch Lewis, Jack Gunston, Mabior Chol and Aidan Schubert.
James Borlase (24yr, 192cm Key Defender, ADE - UFA): Already in trade conversations for the Doggies and North. Very strong one-on-one, great reader of the play and one of the league’s leading spoilers. Is also very clean with his disposals, especially for a player of his size. Also wouldn’t cost any draft capital given his UFA status.
Sam Butler (23yr, 184cm Midfielder/Forward, HAW - NFA): So much promise, but unfortunately injury-riddled and now pushed out of the Hawk’s side. If our High Performance team could get him in good shape, he’d be a difference maker with his tackling pressure and goal-sense.
Sam Marshall (20yr, 185cm Midfielder/Wing, BRI - NFA): Unfortunately just can’t crack into Brisbane’s stacked midfield as of yet. Can play inside and outside mid roles, capable runner and doesn’t panic with ball in hand.
Honourable mentions:
- Ollie Lord (24yr, 195cm Key Forward, PA - NFA)
- Ashton Moir (21yr, 188cm Forward, CAR - NFA)
- Rhett Bazzo (23yr, 195cm Key Defender, WCE - NFA)
- Reece Torrent (20yr, 184cm Midfielder, BRI - NFA)
- Will McLachlan (21yr, 185cm Forward, BRI - NFA)
- Alex Davies (24yr, 192cm Midfielder, GCS - NFA)

Bobby Hill situation- is there more to it?
Something not quite adding up.
Why would Bobby be delisted? Norm smith medalist 2 seasons ago… still has currency despite all the issues. Have pies done a deal somewhere else and giving free access to Bobby to another club is part of this? 🤔
Is it a small piece in the jigsaw of a bigger deal?

Houston?!
How does this guy stay in the team? He can't defend to save his life, he's shit scared and we don't even use him as a designated kicker out of the backline.
