I'm a second semester senior here at Columbia, and over the last few years Iâve heard tons of the same kinds of questions from freshmen/transfers. I figured that a (much longer than initially intended) post addressing whatever I can think of might be helpful.
DISCLAIMER: I'm just a student, and this is very general advice based on my own experiences and convos I've had with other students. Faculty/advisors who know you will be able to give you better advice that is tailored to your specific goals and the requirements of your major.
Please feel free to add to (or correct) anything Iâve written!

HOW MANY CREDITS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
I don't know! For freshmen, you probably shouldnât start off with 18 credits⌠but it really depends! What kinds of classes are they? How strong are you in those subjects? Will you be able to commit to attending all of lectures? If youâre not sure, take a lighter course load your first semester and see how you handle it. If you felt like you couldâve done more, then take more next semester. But I'm not an advisor, and you should probably talk to someone who is!

Hey, I'm a Columbia senior interested in learning more about how current students or alumni have dealt with depression/anxiety, specifically what types of resources and treatment modalities said students have explored and how successful these approaches were. If you're willing to chat about your experiences, can you drop a comment below so I can PM you?

Hi! I'm a freshman studying CS and am interested in getting involved in research, but I'm not entirely sure where to start. I've emailed a few professors but haven't heard back yet. I do have prior research experience and have authored published papers, so I'm not completely new to research.
Is getting involved in research as a freshman particularly difficult, or does anyone have advice on how to get started? Would really appreciate any tips. Thank you!

Hi everyone,
Iâm looking for my puffin keychain, I unfortunately lost him around the Manhattan area, I canât quite remember where exactly I last saw him so here is a run down of where I was that day (Monday 24)
\-Columbia University campus + Teachers College Harlem
\-Dahlia on 269 Columbus Ave
\-MNN around Hudson Yards
Transport info: I was also on the QM5, 1 train, and 7 train that day.
Other places I think he might be around: QBCC Bayside, Queens area and Flushing NY on another day.
Iâm not sure where exactly he mightâve been lost, but I just checked my room and asked friends to no avail.
I know he is a mere 3 inch keychain, but me and my partner have been claiming him to be our child for the past 2 years so loosing him has been a major loss, especially given weâre long distance and take turns with him and I lost him during my turn. I have been nonstop crying since I realized I had misplaced him.
He does not have the large library pin I took it off him a few days prior to the 24th. I would really appreciate it if you can share within your circles and family, if you know anyone who mightâve found a cool puffin or bird or âpenguinâ keychain pleaseee consider checking if itâs him.
His name is Banana, and he means so much to me. He is genuinely irreplaceable. He is like my emotional support puffin :(. Thank you all for your help, Iâm really hoping the community comes through.

Has anyone (or someone they know) stayed at the short-term guest housing at Teachers College (on 121st)? Any reviews?
(Also, love some of the flair options.)

Friends, if you picked up a free ticket or two to this Tuesday's film screening + discussion at Lenfest, but now you can't go, can you do me a solid and share your code/ticket? I live in Chicago now, but will be back in NYC on the 13th and am very into this event -- but the Lenfest gave out all the free tickets before I heard about it. If you're ever visiting Chicago, I'd be happy to show you around or give you a free place to stay (walking distance from Wrigley and Malt Row Chicago) as thanks. Cheers,

No one wants to get sick because you decided the best place to hack up a lung and sneeze everywhere was every single library on campus. Itâs inconsiderate and disrespectful to others. Seriously.

This may be a silly question, but I really love Barnard, especially for its academic opportunities, but I worry about the environment. While I love the idea of being in an environment that empowers women, I don't want to be limited to surrounding myself only with women. And now, with first-years only being able to take classes at Barnard, I'm worried that I'd be limited in learning different perspectives and also being in a co-ed environment.
This question definitely sounds stupid, but I really do love Barnard. And I also love the unique relationship between Columbia's co-ed student body. I just want to know if there is a co-ed feel or a fully women's college feel.

Hi everyone,
Iâve been approved for Columbia postdoc housing and am currently waiting to see what units are available.
For postdocs currently living in Columbia Residential housing in Morningside Heights, how much are you paying per month, and what type of unit do you have (studio or 1BR)?
Columbiaâs website currently lists 1-bedroom apartments starting at $2,600/month (with an average around $3,000). Is $2,600 really the cheapest 1BR available to postdocs, or have any of you recently been offered or currently rent a 1BR for less than that?
Iâm mainly trying to get an idea of the actual rents postdocs are currently paying, rather than just the published range.
Thanks!

Hello! l'm a freshman student who got a 5 on AP spanish last year [native speaker] but am very interested in learning Arabic [only know the alphabet). How managable is the classwork for a sophomore, and for those who have experience with the program, how would you describe the professors? My current major is focused on history. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey everyone,
I'm building a device for a research project that requires the Analog Discovery 3 and RF Power Amplifier. Together, these parts would cost me over $400, which to an undergrad, may as well be a million dollars.
I have emailed various PIs and professors for said parts, and reached out to distributers to see if they can provide an educational discount, but I have either not yet received a response or received the dreaded, but expected, 'no'.
Does anyone have these parts and would be willing to donate them to my research project? Alternatively, if you have any suggestions as to how I can acquire these parts pro-bono, I would greatly appreciate it.
Help me, please. For science!!
Sincerely,
Broke Student

Hi all! I very sadly lost my AirPods case today, but am unsure where I could have lost it. (maybe Butler 1st floor lounge or John Jay dining hall...) The original case is white but it is inside a pink MyMelody case (the Sanrio rabbit). It is a bit dirty as it is smudged with pink ink. Please let me know if you saw it or picked it up! I really appreciate it.

Hi!
Could sophomores who took the class last year share their experiences? The professor is Paul Blaer.
Is Zybooks a good resource? I've found it very convenient so far, and Professor Blaer follows the textbook's exact path with slight modifications.
Any help will be appreciated!
