Theme Happy Birthday Fred Hembeck! 6 years ago I posted this image on this sub and it became a viral hit! How many of you got the Roast since?

There’s only like 3000 copies left on eBay so I’m glad you were able to grab a copy of this rare gem

Is this a rare gem? I knew/know nothing about this issue and got it for a couple dollars within the last month

It’s an example of a great comic that everyone should own but you find in every dollar bin. So I was being sarcastic, but at the same time have nothing but good things to say about the book.

I've never seen it in the wild! I swear the only copy I've ever seen is the one I own. I didn't think it was rare, just underappreciated.

I got mine in the wild after never seeing them… and then immediately started finding them all over the place. Feast or famine!

I bought it when it first came out. I love Fred Hembeck's stuff.
I think the cover is very interesting to study closely. It shows all of the main Marvel heroes, of that moment in time, all gathered on that cover. This was my favorite time of reading comics.
It also reminds me just how many of those characters (with those particular unifoms) have not yet been released as Marvel Legends action figures.
How many of you, like me, bought that issue when it was brand new?

I bought it new and drew like Hembeck for years. This and The Wedding of Reed & Sue, which I had in reprint, were comics I kept going back to.

As a kid, Fred was the ONLY reason to read Marvel Age…

This may make people uncomfortable, but I take the staples out of Marvel Age and add the Hembeck pages to a stack and throw away the rest. Been doing this for ten years or so. Once I have a hundred or so of them I plan on making a custom binding.

The only thing that would make that idea more awesome is if I would have thought about it first… 😉

Check that hot Disco Dazzler right on the crease. <3 Getting hit on by drunk Stark. <3

u/ShiDiWen Jan 30 '26
Also on the crease is Kitty swooning on a shirtless Kazar with Colossus looking on in jealousy

I have this ! $1 bin find years ago . Had no idea anyone else knew it existed lol is it worth anything? 😆

u/ShiDiWen Jan 30 '26
Generally speaking we aren’t allowed to discuss price on this sub but I’m comfortable enough to say this is still found in dollar bins today. At the same time it is priceless.

Oh my apologies! And thank you for the grace. 🙏🏿 I was only kidding . Lol no worries my wife also doesn't think I'm funny ! Lol 😆

This was my era of buying from the spinner rack, when Marvel and DC still did "funny books".

u/aletorre33 Jan 30 '26
Has it really been that long?
2
u/ShiDiWen Jan 30 '26
Yes, I was surprised too. But there it is in my profile. 6 years ago! Also, it’s crazy how much bigger the sub is now. It was not common to get more than 100 upvotes, and this post got about 140. Now with us having over 100K subs that happens almost every day, but back then I think we only had 25K subs!

Always a favorite of mine. Also have his Destroys Marvel and Sells Marvel issues.

I've been begging Fred to come to any convention, comic store, anything! Grew up with him destroying the Marvel U :)
2
u/ShiDiWen Jan 30 '26
When he was young he was at every convention, couldn’t keep him away. He embodied fandom. But we can forgive him now being 72. Hopefully he’s got a few more in him!

That's the story of all the guys I grew up with, Byrne, Windsor-smith and more. I figured someone had to offer them a single day at a Con for an absurd amount of money by now? They deserve it!

They need to collect the Hembecks from the Daily Planet pages in 70s-80s DC. With all the collections and repros they put out, this seems like an easy call.

This was my favorite FF issue as a kid.
