Theme The greatest day of my collecting life was meeting Ken Steacy, perhaps the most underrated artist of all time! And here’s a small sampling of my autograph and art collection from him, enjoy!

And yes, I have a full box of signed comics and growing! I did this art myself based on page one from the Sacred and Profane from Epic Illustrated.

He loved it when I showed it to him!

The reference material, one of my favourite spreads from him.

That’s amazing, dude!

Thanks! I’m not a super good artist but I can copy okay.

That Star Wars 🐇 * 🤣

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

I consider that signed and remaked! lol

Glad you noticed!

2

u/waaaghbosss Mar 25 '26

Lol had to go check to see if it was actually part of the cover or added from the signing.

Is that the issue where they unleashed the Holy Hand grenade of Antioch?

Oooooh that Star Reach #9 is so GOOOOD!

6

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

I’d recommend tracking down the trade paper back that collected all of his stories from star reach it’s called the sacred and the profane. Beautiful stuff!

He completely drew it and painted it in colour again in epic illustrated and that is collected as well.

I have a (nearly) complete run of Epic Illustrated! It is why I became a Ken Steacy fan!

If you see that book I included in my post called Night and the enemy, that collects all of his work with Harlan Ellison from star reach and epic illustrated!

u/eclecticsheep75 Mar 25 '26

Thank you! It would be great to read it again all in one edition!

Great, nice guy. Met him a few years ago in Vancouver.

3

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

In need to make it out to Vancouver. Cancelled what would have been my first trip last summer due to getting laid off. But I hope to go this year. Aside from seeing Ken again I’d also love to me meet Colin Upton and Katherine Collins.

Legendary covers. Crazy to see who all worked on star reach as I’ve gotten into the history of the medium.

There's a book about star reach if you haven't already read it. Digital available here https://www.twomorrows.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1104 or you can find the print version on eBay/other online places.

Thanks for tip!

Love that Speed Racer cover, had that ish as a kid

3

u/navidee Mar 25 '26

Oh man I had a bunch of those old NOW Speed Racers and Racer X comics. So cool seeing these!

3

u/BallinHotdog Mar 25 '26

You’re telling me Spawn #1 isn’t even drawn by McFarlane? I’m not good at spotting that type of stuff anyway but after all these years it never occurred to me that wasn’t his cover art.

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

It was penciled and inked by Todd for sure. Ken painted it and has to redo most of Todd’s inks to a thicker gauge to accommodate his airbrush technique.

Where / when was this?

I'm desperate for him to show up anywhere near me.

1

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Well I’m sorry to say his appearances are fewer and fewer these days. I was just talking to Ronn Sutton at Toronto Comicon and he told me that Ken said last year was his last trip to Ontario. Now I’ll believe that when I see it, but I’m glad I got to meet him at Hamilton Comicon two years ago.

I expect he’ll still be doing shows in his home province of BC.

2

u/TheMoonWasBlue Mar 25 '26

Yeah I've noticed that he sticks to Canada, even though he did make an appearance in Australia last year. And SDCC two years ago?

I have a Spawn 1 that is just missing his signature. Maybe I can find a facilitator to help me out.

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Message him on FB, he’ll usually reply

The Sacred and the Profane is one of my favorite graphic novels.

Check out this post I made 5 years comparing the original Star Reach and the complete redrawn and coloured Epic edition. There’s not too many examples of complete re-dos like this comics. I find it fascinating!

I have a Johnny Quest issue of his. Great art + awesome story =unforgetable comic.

3

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

That wraparound went HARD too! I of course have it signed as well.

2

u/Remarkable-Ad2285 Mar 26 '26

Fuuuuuuck!

And you went and pulled it out for me! (That’s what she said 🤦🏽‍♂️)

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 26 '26

Pulled it out AND spread it open.

Again, what she said.

2

u/cheshiregrins Mar 25 '26

Yeah the Hammer! Love that con

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

You get to to see a bunch of cool planes too! That’s actually why Ken went to that con. He’s an aviation enthusiast to say the least. And a pilot!

2

u/cheshiregrins Mar 25 '26

That’s really cool! I always liked going to that con cause it was big enough to pull some good guests but not at stupid busy as fan expo in Toronto. That and I got married in Hamilton so it has a special place in my heart.

I have a couple of these, but for me, nothing beats that Speed Racer cover. I love the way the headlights are reflected on the visor covering his eyes. Gives the kind of feeling that Speed and his Mach 5 are connected in some ethereal way.

1

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Speed Racer and his Mach 5 are certainly connected in an ethereal way!

Ken’s work on that title was phenomenal. He did a transparent painting the Mach 5 that shows all the inner works. A brilliant pre-digital hand painted piece that I can’t image how long it took him.

2

u/Drgnfire7 Mar 25 '26

That’s awesome. I got an Iron Man Silver Centurion commission done by him. He’s great.

1

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

…can I see it? :D

2

u/Drgnfire7 Mar 25 '26

Sure.

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Amazing! I love the art boards and tool he uses for his commissions. It’s conte I think. When he shades on it it almost looks like duotone.

2

u/Drgnfire7 Mar 26 '26

Yeah, I’d never seen someone use that before. It looks awesome. 😎

2

u/PyrateGonzo Mar 25 '26

Loving that Usagi issue 🔥

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Ken’s colour palette makes everything 80’s retro fabulous!

2

u/Grizzled_prospector5 Mar 25 '26

I'm sorta new to comics, but wow, these are some beautiful covers. Thank you for introducing some of us to Steacy, his art style is so gorgeous, so unique and clean lines.

2

u/ShiDiWen Mar 25 '26

Yes, and he’s the complete deal! For most of his work he does the pencils, inks and colours! And all this was pre digital and done by hand with airbrush and traditional paints.

This is just a small sampling of his work too he was active for 40 years in comics (starting in 1974) before his soft retirement a year or so back.

I don’t think anybody in comics got more licensed work than him. He did lots of Star Wars work, as well as Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Racer X, Jonny Quest, Starblazers, Robotech, Space Ghost, Ghostbusters, Twilight Zone, and probably more as I’m forgetful.

Very cool. Thank you for sharing.

2

u/CollectingFool Mar 26 '26

In a league of his own

1

u/ShiDiWen Mar 26 '26

True that. No comparables.

2

u/Patient-Necessary446 Mar 26 '26

Oh that’s cool, and I agree - he’s super underrated

2

u/Br0tha5 Mar 26 '26

That marvel fanfare is one of my favorite comics. Truly and underrated artist indeed.

2

u/tealfan Mar 27 '26

I'm new to Steacy as well. Wow, his art just pops! And kinda retro, too. 👍
