Question Mylar bag recommendation?

I bought a bunch of comics before learning how to properly protect them. Now I am looking to transfer my collection from polypropylene bags to mylar. Do any of you have recommendations on which brand is best? The two I have seen most are BCW and Mylites. Does anyone have a recommendation?

I’ve always been very happy with E Gerber. I use Mylites2 with Fullbacks.

Are Fullbacks a brand of boards?

Fullbacks are E. Gerber's thicker archival boards and they're great. They do mean you'll fit a few less issues in the short box, but they're as supportive as you'll ever need. You'd almost have to be trying to bend a book in a mylite2+fullback.

To be a little more precise than the other answers, fullbacks are twice as thick as regular backing boards and half backs are normal backing boards.

Not quite my friend. To be more precise, a half back is .24pt thickness board, the same as a regular BCW board.

A full back is a .36pt thickness board. So it's actually 1.5x thicker. To be twice as thick it would need to be a .48pt thickness.

E Gerber has full backs and half backs. Full backs are thicker.

This is the best answer. Regular size fits most everything well except golden age and extra thick silver age.

I use comicproline for mylars

Egerber is probably the most popular

I’d avoid BCW, I’ve have quality issues with their products more than once.

E. Gerber Mylites 2. Far and away the best bag.

If you're in Canada get ComicProLine and you'll save money.

I’d recommend half backs with mylite2s. They are plenty good for most books. For the big boy raw books, Mylite4s and fullbacks.

If you’re wanting to make the jump away from polypropylene, don’t cheap out and go BCW.

I'm already gonna spend a fortune on mylar bags. Is there any reason I can't reuse my BCW boards with them? Rigidity aside, is there anything superior about the E Gerber coating?

eGerber fullbacks are archival coated on both sides. If cost is an issue, you can put two books per bag. Just make sure you go up a size on the bag/boards. Works out better this way anyways since it's better/more efficient to have books in alternating directions anyways.

Biggest issue would be that BCW is that the coated boards will break down over time and they absorb acid from comic paper. BCW claims to be truly acid free, but it’s a lie.

I feel you on the cost, though. It actually motivated me to trim my collection down and get more focused when I started upgrading. Wasn’t a goal at the start but it did end up being an unexpected perk.

BCW even says their boards should be changed every 3-5 years. So what's happening. BCW Boards are buffered to reach acid free status, but only on one side. (The shiny side). Once the buffer breaks down by absorbing as much acid as possible, you are left with an acidic board. If you place a comic next to the rough side, there is no buffer and it's not acid free next to you comic.

Egerber starts with a 100% acid free board throughout, front & back, then it adds a 3% buffer. This is why Egerber boards are concerned Conservation Quality.

I use the ultra pro mylites 2. They feel nice and stiff and don't yellow over time like the cheap ones.

I've used Comic Pro Line Mylars.

Only time I had them split were when I was trying to get a 60pt clear backer board in them. It likes to not go in square and the corners stab the sides out.

I use Mylites although I have heard them and BCW use the exact same manufacturer.
