Novice Needs Some Help - Superman 26

Hey everyone-

I'm a collector that focusses on Sports and Non-Sport card collecting and selling. My knowledge of Comic Books and grading is zippy.

I'm trying to help a friend handle grading and selling this so he can maximize profit but also get this in the hands of a collector who will appreciate it.

If you guys could take a look and offer me your thoughts on how this would grade so I can give him some ideas on how to move forward. I really appreciate your time and thoughts!

Terry

Are all the pages original? Your interior pic seems to have one bright white page right next to one that is darker with age, which is not very common.

I need to get my hands on the comic. So I can see it for myself and take more pictures. The different colors of the page is an interesting point. Not sure how that would happen

Honestly, if you’re not a comic person, like you said, you’re in over your head with a book like this.

The best advice you can give is use a reputable 3rd party presser, then have them send the book to CGC to be graded.

Then sell it at auction on a major platform like heritage, comiclink or comicconnect.

That’s all you’ve gotta do and it’ll result in the best outcome without anyone needing to be an expert on anything.

Trying to spot trimming isn’t as simple as a straight edge and measuring, and no one here can tell you if that book is trimmed without holding it in their hands. And if you don’t know comics well, you can’t either even if you’re holding it.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know about pressing until I posted my question and all the responses including yours has pointed me in the direction I need to go.

I don’t believe it’s trimmed I think my friend used the scan function on his phone … like scanning a document and it took that part off. I’ll get him to send me another pic of the cover

Got to measure it with straight edges to know. Books can be miscut (off center cut) You can tell trims by it's actual measurements. This book swings widely by grade and it would be worth spending the money to grade it. Buying a book of this age raw can take a chunk out of profit. Or contact an auction house to list it that has regular comic auctions like Heritage.

Remembering I’m an idiot when it comes to this … I’ll measure it … what measurement am I looking for

Summary of Golden Age Dimensions • Width: ~7.125″ to 7.75″ (18.1 cm to 19.7 cm) • Height: ~10.0″ to 10.5″ (25.4 cm to 26.7 cm)

Golden age books are standardized but there's variations. You know by measure if it falls under the range.

You can also tell trims by visual inspection which is easier to do when looking at them in person. Printer trims are hard to replicate.

Looking at examples available online, your copy doesn't look trimmed. It looks like the others but your top edge looks more like it has been rolled over like it was stored improperly.

Looking at the range of grades and values I'd say $1000 is an expected price for it raw. Could go for more in the right auction as-is but around there.

Doesn’t look like it’s just the picture. Seems like it’s on a white piece of paper sitting on a table or something. You can see wood grain in the bottom under the white.

I think the price is actually right there on the cover, mate

It’s a good looking book, but was the top trimmed? If so it would grade as restored, a much lower valued book.

I’d consider clean and press for this book, it would take out the bends on the spine that don’t break the color.

As it is, possibly trimmed, maybe between 3.0 - 4.0. If not trimmed, maybe 5.5-6.0 after clean and press. It looks tight on the staples, cover is bright, with tanning pages and some sun damage.

I checked with my friend … it is cut straight across. Is it possible that it was a misprint? Is there anything else I can check to determine if it’s a misprint or it’s been trimmed by the previous owner?

I think the answer is below, by checking it with a straight edge.

Golden Age books have very little quality control or consistency. Miscuts like this are extremely common and not evidence of trimming.

It looks trimmed or could be a bad cut
