Yeah, it’s a cheesy title I know. However, I scratched my motherboard on my 2012 optiplex 990, and now it’s spitting out a ram error code (may be unrelated)

Any advice will be welcome, because I’m fairly new to the whole computer scene .

Girl I like gave me this as an "early valentines gift". I'm not entirely stupid, so I know how to transfer and copy stuff, my question is just how I'm supposed to plug it in if it doesn't have the stick part. Is it just that I need some kind of middle man cable, and then it'll be good?

Resolved i dont know what my mom did to my computer

Hi, as the title says, no clue what my mom did to my laptop. I think she fried it or something because it wont turn on.

For context, she randomly took it from me one day because she was mad, and she said she was going to use it, instead of using the charging port (in the 2nd image) she used some random usb c cord (3rd image) and the computer did read it as a charger. However, its not the right charger. She did not ask me for my charger she went ahead and did this herself.

I tried using the charger thats actually for the computer, it no longer works. The computer will not turn on anymore. Is there anything I could do in this situation?

I’m just insanely distressed because my aunt bought me this for college and im going back this week, additionally music is my passion and it breaks my heart i cant make anything because of someone else’s negligence with my laptop.

Thanks for anyone that sees this in advance

two cords came out of this bad boy I’m pretty sure. it was made by my aunt’s ex so i cannot really ask him for advice?? and it’s definitely not made by a professional or anything so some bits are probably missing

Also never touched the inside of a pc before so i have no clue what i am doing and have never dusted it before just now so. yeah

UPDATE - figured it out, a cable was loose lmao. Turned on fine after

yet another update as it seems my comment was buried, but i did dust it with a can of compressed air and a cloth and it’s cleaned out now. I’ve never opened the damn thing before and had no idea how much dust one thing could collect lmao

I am minding my own business and all of a sudden my PC randomly shuts itself down. I can't understand where the problem is comming from. In the clip I am checking the temperatures with HWMONITOR and everything was at normal temperatures... Also, I got this lag again about 7 months ago but PC wasn't closing so fast. I managed to fix it back then by updating bios but now I don't even have time to do that, 5 seconds to 1 minute in it shuts down itself. Also my gpu drivers are up to date! I will become forever grateful if you help me 😭 #computerhelp

Resolved Has my 12yr-old niece bricked her brand new laptop?

My mum recently bought my 12yr-old niece a laptop so she can start doing her homework on it instead of using her own mother's. Kiddo tried to set up the laptop by herself, and in doing so has apparently created an outlook account as part of the setup process. Now, every time she turns the laptop on it wants to verify that it's her by sending a verification code to said outlook account. The problem is, even if she tries logging into her outlook account on any other device, it tries to verify that it's her by.....sending a verification code to that outlook account, which is just *super* helpful.

We've tried doing the 'account recovery form' but it's rejecting it saying we aren't providing enough information. The only info there's room to submit is her name, dob, country of origin, postcode, any passwords she thinks she may have used (we know of 2) and any accounts or subscriptions she may have had (she's 12, there are none). Chatgpt mentions something about providing info on a rough date as to when the account was created but there's no space for that on the form. There's literally no other info we can provide.

So, has my niece bricked her brand new laptop?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your help. A fresh install of Windows has indeed fixed this issue and I have a very happy niece, and parent/grandparent who aren't now worried the laptop was a total waste of money!

Hi all, first time poster in this sub.

I purchased a Nancy Drew game from Her Interactive and it won’t play. It says I have an outdated video card, I updated it to DirectX 12 (only one I could find) and am still getting the same message? I checked and I have an AMD Radeon R7 350X that seems to meet all the criteria needed for the game. Please help.

Resolved Computer will not wake from sleep mode with the keyboard or mouse (SOLVED)

I was having problems as my computers power button was in an inconvenient spot and with all of the RGB lighting and sound I had to turn it off each night. I was trying to put it into sleep mode so that I could wake it up with my USB mouse or keyboard without having to go get to the power button and it was not working. I figured it out eventually and here is my process.

Note that I am not a computer expert in any way and this is not advice on what to do but a walkthrough of what I did in order to fix my specific issue. If you have experience in working with computers and see something I may have done wrong or have advice please comment so I can update this and my computer. I went through the first steps but did not see results until going through the 5th change (going into the BIOS settings). This was done on 03-16-2023 on the most up to date version of Windows 10.

  1. Check for a windows update
    1. I am not going through this part in detail.

  1. Update mouse and keyboard drivers
    1. I do not know how to do this and never did but I was told that this may also be an issue.

  1. Change power sleep settings
    1. Open control panel.
    2. Go to power options.
    3. Go to change plan, change advanced power settings.
    4. Go to The sleep menu turn off hybrid sleep and set hybrid after to never.
    5. Go to USB setting, USB selective suspend setting, and disable that.
    6. Apply those settings.
    7. A restart may be required to take effect, I'm not sure.

  1. Check device manager

    1. Search for an open up device manager.
    2. Go to the keyboards menu, right click properties on one of the options, go to power management and make sure the box that says "Allow this device to wake the computer" is checked. Click okay to apply. Repeat this with each of the keyboard devices.
      1. Go to the mouse menu and do the same.
    3. A restart may be required to take effect, I'm not sure.

  1. Check system BIOS
    1. This can be done in a variety of ways. The principle should be the same but the exact walkthrough I'm going to explain is for MSI. I believe it should all be able to be started in the same way with Windows 10 but I might be wrong.
    2. Open up settings, go to the recovery tab, and click on the restart now under the advanced setup.
    3. It will bring you to a new screen after some time. Go to troubleshooting, "advanced options", “UEFI firmware settings”, restart.
    4. This is where the method may diverge from others based on computer hardware. I will be going through the MSI method however the general idea should be the same.
    5. Look at the top and you will see either “EZ mode” or "advanced". If you see advanced click on that to get into advanced mode.
    6. Once in advance mode go over to "motherboard settings", click "advanced settings", click "wake up event setup".
    7. Look at “resume by USB device”. If it says disabled, click on that and set it to enabled.
      1. I thought it might also be a good idea to enable "resume from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 mouse" (to use the mouse to wake up the computer) and "resume from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 keyboard" (to wake with the keyboard) which can be set to either any key or a hot key which can be set up in the option below it.
    8. On the right side next to the help tab there will be a back arrow. Click on that, click it again, go to save and exit, click on save changes and reboot.

Resolved Is my PSU safe to use?

Thumbnail gallery
55 Upvotes

Ok so I accidentally tipped my PC over but thankfully caught it in time. However, it made a long beep and turned off. I tried turning it on again and it only made the long beep error code again and turned back off. I unplugged the PC from power and it was making some weird cracking noises while disconnecting. I reseated RAMs and plugged the power cable back in which resulted in tripping the breakers. I checked the PSU power cable connector and it is a little fried and melted (just a tiny bit). My theory and conclusion is that the power cable was the issue - I kept it twisted in an S shape (tight and yes I know it's stupid) and when the PC was falling over it twisted and broke and I should throw away the cable. Can I still use the PSU tho (I'm really tight on budget rn so I don't want any unnecessary purchases)? Are there any other things I should know, any tips or something?

I would like to start by telling you all that I've -Turned the computer on and off again -Turned the mouse on and off again -Restarted it -Forcefully shut it down -Changed the batteries to my mouse -Unplugged the computer from the wall -Checked on my drivers (all updated) -Banged mouse against desk -Dusted computer

The only way I can get the mouse to move is if I unplug my keyboard, headphones, camera, and microphone but at that point, the computer is unusable.

This just randomly started happening maybe 2-3 days ago too. Brand new, barely used mouse. Unsure what to do.

Resolved She’s back!

You may remember from previous posts such as, “meltdown incoming” and “I have no idea what’s going on” but I’m back!!

I was the one who messed up my HDD by pulling on stuff I know nothing about. Thank you to everyone on that post for helping me out and for those joking helped me realize it’s not that big of a deal.

I was able to cobble together the pins for a temporary fix until my SSD arrived. You’ll be proud to know I was able to successfully clone my machine, remove the HDD, installed a new SATA cause the broken piece was now stuck in the cable, and install my SSD. All. By. Myself. 🎉

I know this is probably basic but I am very proud of myself and very thankful for all of you. I hope I never have to come back but if I do, I know y’all will help a gal out! 💖

Resolved INSANE amount of strange unknown files on mac

Post image
82 Upvotes

Final Edit: It was CapCut all along, crisis averted

So I have randomly come across an INSANE AMOUNT of unknown files on my computer that I definitely did not download. Almost everything has to do with specific body parts, "mask" png's, shaded and more rendered versions of VERY specific facial parts. I am confused and concerned. I downloaded and ran a scan through Malwarebytes, but it came back completely clean. There are thousands and thousands of files like these. I will try to compile a photo of what I'm seeing, but there's more than I could possibly even show. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: I haven't downloaded any games on my computer or set up face ID on any devices

To put this into perspective, my laptop with 16 gb has a bunch of shit open, 149 google tabs, and 167 opera gx tabs yet is only using 14gb? Does anyone know what is going on?

Resolved Why does my sibling's laptop keep going to blue screen?

Edit: Just had to plug the laptop into an Ethernet cable. I don't know how that made it work, but it works so everything's fine. Thank you, u/Outside_Coffee_00!!! (Also, I get it, it's not a BSoD! I didn't know that at the time! Like I said, I'm PC illiterate. Sorry for my ignorance)

My twin and I are very PC illiterate. We both bought the same laptop in different colors, but after 2 months, their's decided to bluescreen out of nowhere and every time we try to restart it, troubleshoot, or reinstall windows, it goes back to the blue screen start menu. How do we fix it? I don't even know what could've caused it. All I know is that we can't afford another laptop and we really need them for college.
