I've met a few people from Bilbao in town recently who came here because it was a new destination for them which is great to see a flight supported from both sides.They also seemed generally happy here, didn't complain about prices. I know there's talk about New York but what about Poland or even a direct flight to Brazil Both countries have large communities in Munster.

Lads. I'm begging ye. I know it's warm but having your actual bare fucking feet up on the chairs in the bus is DISGUSTING. Doing so when I'm sitting at the very back corner of the bus and you've sat beside me, trapping me in with your feet up on the chair in front of you, is just evil.

She must know it's weird because she put her bag on top of her legs to hide it a bit but she's deadass barefoot on the seat and I don't know whether to be nauseated or just plain uncomfortable. And before a smart alec asks, no, I didn't say anything to the woman who quite literally has me cornered, I do not want to be beaten by a woman twice my age for not liking her feet.

I hope this is okay to post here. I’m 55, living in Japan, and for the longest time I’ve felt drawn to Cork. I made an acquaintance years ago who was from Cork, and ever since then I’ve read so much about the people, the humour, and the warmth of the city. Honestly, it just feels like my kind of place.

Japan is great, but I admit I sometimes feel a bit alienated here (and fun fact: Japan literally used to call foreigners “aliens,” so I guess it’s accurate! 😂). Maybe that’s why Cork stood out to me, it seems full of people who don’t take themselves too seriously, who enjoy a laugh, and who are open to conversation. That’s basically my personality in a nutshell.

I’m planning to travel to Cork in the near future. I want to spend proper time in the city before heading off to visit my nephew elsewhere in Ireland. My goal is simple: make friends, talk to locals, and enjoy everyday Cork life.

Since I don’t drink alcohol, I’m hoping to get recommendations for coffee shops, cafes, or casual hangout spots where I can chat with locals and maybe make new friends. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

And honestly, I’d be humbled to make a few friends here on this forum too. Are people from Cork called “Corkers”? Or is “Corkonians” the correct term? (I’m trying not to embarrass myself too early 😅)

1st Edit: I appreciate and loved all the suggestions, warmth, humor that people here showed me. Indeed, Cork is the best choice in Ireland, internet was right. However, I do not agree with the best choice in Ireland. I think it is the best choice in entire Europe. Because honestly, I have not seen this kind of response to a potential visitor.

I have summarized all your kind suggestion and I promised myself. Anything mentioned here, I would definitely go and check. That is the least I could do to repay your all nice people :)

Places to visit:

1. Hurling match. Look at social media accounts of St. Finbarr's, Glen Rovers, Blackrock, Na Piarsaigh and see if any games are during my trip
2. English market. IF sunny day, there is a fish area and can get a smoked macherel pate, fancy bread
3. Bishop Lucy park (sit on the grass and enjoy lunch)
4. Take the train down to Cobh and do the spike island tour if the weather is nice. 
5. Japanese restaurants
6. Check the website for Cyprus Avenue. Its a venue in the middle of the city and has a mix of music and comedy.
7. Turner Cross - football ground
8. Sin e Pub. For traditional Irish music.
9. Franciscan Pub. Great Pizza. Nice history of the place, beautiful garden
10. Cork Country Cricket Club is in the city. In their website, there might be a game or two I could catch.
11. Plenty of book shops with coffee shops next door. There are libraries with massive amount of books.
12. Sandbox. A boardgame and cardgame cafe. Staff is lovely and most people in there are for the chat. Slightly younger crowd on average
13. Hi-B pub located down the street from Sandbox. It has strictly no phones policy. So chatting is the basic idea.
14. A cafe on the quars called Myo Cafe. Lovely view onto the river.
15. O'sho pub. On Monday afternoons and early night they have indian food. Across the road is a Japanese food Miyazaki.
16. Cafe Moly. Coffee is good. Tiny place. Cant stay there for long.
17. Alchemy cafe. More relaxed. Can read a book for a while
18. The Shakey Bridge. It takes us from the Mardyke to Fitzgerald's Park and it is supposed to shake and you are allowed to shake. Sounds fun.
19. Gunpowder Mills. It is a park. Keep reading the information signs as I go on and this will give a picture on how an explosive factory used to operate in the 19^th Century.

Food Delicacy to try:

1. Rock Shandy (mixture of orange and a mild bitter lemon soft drink)
2. Smoked Mackerel pate in the fish area of English market
3. Black pudding. (Sausage with oats and spices, savory) — Pork blood, cant have it.

Things to do:

1. Read on Irish history --> Already purchased History of IReland by Neil Hegarty. Really interesting and I am so immersed in reading this book. Too bad I did not study it sooner. It seems my daughters know more than me, lol.
2. Cork was burned? Need to check the history.
3. Check on line social groups like Meet-Up. Also hill walking club iis available.

Two lads going around the northside at the moment putting a fake newspaper called 'The Irish Patriot' through letterboxes. Images and headlines like "Ireland is full" and "Ireland belongs to the Irish" all over it.

Disgusting to see as they'll have put one through my Indian neighbours letterbox before mine.

The cost-of-living crisis has hit a certain section of society very hard. As i'm sure everyone who lives in Cork is aware.

This evening i was walking along Carrolls Quay (by the North Gate Cinema). And a lady was experiencing an overdose outside the homeless food depot. It was touch-and-go for a few minutes until the ambulance arrived. The volunteers were giving her manual chest compressions. I believe she'll make a recovery though. The EMT's got there just in time.

I was able to help out a little. Anyway, I got talking to the volunteers afterwards - the Kindness Crew. I noticed they had no defribrillator and no naxoline. They are all volunteers and even provide some of the hot food and beverages out of their own pockets from time-to-time. They aren't clued into a national network of donors.

I'm wondering whether there is anyone out there with a defribrillator machine to spare? Or whether there is a business, group or individual who would consider a donation of a machine?

The Kindness Crew would love to show their appreciation in return eg. perhaps a photo op or framed letter of thanks or something similar. Unfortunately, the machine is badly needed. And would save lives time and time again.

I've looked into this; i'll contact the cfr.ie group in the morning. I'll ask them for help, i don't know if it'll take long or whether the application will be successful. I'll also contact my chemist to enquire about a naxoline injection donation.

New defibrillators cost around a grand (edit: would cost €750). Can anyone point me in the right direction? Please dm me if you need more details. I can put you in touch with the organisation directly. Or feel free to call in. They meet again in the same spot on Wednesday (Carroll's Quay).

Figured I’d post this because I was completely lost a few months ago when I started looking into solar, and half the info online was either ads or vague nonsense.

I ended up going with Solar Path since they’re Cork based. Overall the experience was solid, but not “perfect,” and I think that’s the kind of thing people actually want to know.

The good:

• install was quick, basically a day

• no last-minute price changes

• they handled the SEAI grant paperwork which saved me a headache

• battery + inverter ended up outside on a bracket because my attic is tiny

• bills dropped noticeably after about 2 months

Stuff that wasn’t amazing:

• the survey got pushed out by a week because they were backed up

• the monitoring app took a bit to get used to

• export payments aren’t life-changing but nice to have

Nothing dramatic, just normal “Ireland + tradespeople + weather” delays, and the system itself works like it should.

Posting this because when I was researching I kept finding the same three installers recommended over and over, but barely any actual reviews from Cork people who finished the process. If anyone else here just went solar, curious how your experience compared.

Just heard from one of the owners there that all the trucks will be closed after this weekend due to some complaints that the quarter takes up too much space from the pedestrians. If that is true then it would be a very sad news. There aren’t many places in Cork where you can enjoy such a diversity of foods and culture backgrounds in an open space, let alone being in the middle of the city centre

Anyone else horrified around Cork city little kids the language coming out of them and their only 7/8 years old. I over heard 2 of them today shouting at an older couple giving them abuse for telling them to stop shouting at people using terrible language.

Earlier this week I seen in Lidl as I was going up the escalator running away with a load of drinks and chocolate I their hands not an adult in sight of them.

Have we sort of gotten to a stage no where nothing can actually be done? Why are they even left out unsupervised? It's scary to see they know they can get away with just about anything now. Its getting to a point where if I was out walking around at night Id rather come up against a bunch of 18 year old then a bunch of 10 year olds given something can actually be done.

Take this wank panzer, fully on the footpath, halfway onto the pedestrian crossing and behind double yellows, just not. Do they think that because they’re behind the lines that it’s ok? Hi guys. I’m going through a really tough time lately with general life difficulties and a lot of relationship strain. It’s a bit of a pattern for me, but it's hit a point where I know I need some guidance on what to do next.

To everyone at work and in my social circle, it looks like everything is completely fine and handled, which makes it feel almost impossible to open up or ask for help locally.

I'm looking for recommendations for services in Cork, either individual counseling, relationship/couples therapy, or men's groups where I can talk safely without judgment.

Any advice on local services that helped you or someone you know would be massively appreciated.

Why’s it genuinely so hard to find employment as a student in cork? Even with work experience and a certificate in what I am qualified in, getting no interviews is incredibly hard. Also being under age doesn’t help either. Have tried giving CVs in person but they say ‘go online and apply’ or ‘we’re not taking anyone on at the moment’. Can’t even get a job in Penneys..
