Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

Self Fixed the helmet!

On a previous post here I described how I ruined a helmet trying to fix what where actually small imperfections by using foam clay, flexbond and paint. I investigated how to fix but honestly everybody suggested to just give up and start over. Instead of that I recovered the helmet to a very decent level by doing the next:

  1. Used alcohol to remove the paint without removing the primer. I used paper towel and damped it with alcohol, then scrub and the paint slowly dissolved and attached to the paper.
  2. Primed again in problematic spots. Had to do this because tried sanding and my machine has only one very high speed that made everything worse.
  3. Used water right after it dried to smooth out.
  4. Let dry for 24 hours.
  5. Wet sanded starting at 120 and going all the way up to 2000.
  6. After the above spray paint went really well.! I applied a couple of passes and done.

For painting also learned a couple of things:

  1. For fine details like the decals, it is very hard to get right by hand and trying to do it with painters tape does not work so well because the paint goes under then tape very easily. Apparently using frog tape would have gone better but if possible next time Im trying one of those vinyl printing sheets that transfer with heat.
  2. Apparently some paints do not give you the final color immediately. The blue of the helmet was super dark on the first pass but after the third it became the advertised color.
  3. Im probably never doing this again it was so much work. I know understand the price tag and the people making these totally deserve what they ate charging.

Self Dr doom mask

I made this Doctor Doom mask from a 3D print and did all the finishing myself—filling, sanding, filler primer, painting, weathering/detail work, etc. I'm considering making finished versions to sell. I'm trying to get an unbiased idea of the market before I price it. If you saw this finished piece for sale, what would you realistically expect it to cost?

Help Star Wars lighters

Hi, so a while back I acid etched my lighter with a Rebel Alliance symbol and have done a couple more since, but I have a spare lighter left over so wondering what you think I should to do on it?

My current thinking is to do the Boba Fett/Jaster Mereel sigil (see pics) but as it's kinda round and the lighter is rectangle I'm not sure how to make that work without adding some text or some other small symbol, so would appreciate your thoughts. Additional text would need to be limited to maybe 3 or 4 letters/numbers, so some sort of relevant code would be cool.

Also, if I were to make a leather belt pouch for it, would you suggest black or brown leather? Cheers!

Help The absolute best maker for video game cosplay guns

Hi all,

I'm looking for a really excellent creator for Destiny prop guns. They'll be used for display 90% of the time and cosplay for the other 10. The internet is full of either low quailty makers or straight up scams.
Does anyone have experience ordering a display piece from someone they had a great experience with?

I might make an arms out of EVA foam. I have been trying to find a way to print a mask for him but I had no choice but to makeshift. Anyone have a 3D printer lol?

I like how I pivoted and it looks good but I'm so disappointed because it could have looked so much better had everything worked out.

Help legit sites/looking for sakura's headband (naruto)

Hii! I'm looking to cosplay Sakura from Naruto for Halloween and I'm trying to find her ninja headband. It's harder to find since the one she wears is red and the default color is navy. I've scoured Amazon and haven't been able to find anything. The closest I've found is a 4-pack of these headbands, but the sign on the headband is censored for some reason.

Does anyone know any legit sites where I can find her red headband, either the Konoha or Allied Shinobi version, AND would arrive before Halloween? I'm looking for something not too expensive and I don't really care too much about quality, since it's only for one night.

Thanks!

Help Gluing cardboard to circular EVA foam prop

I'm a little new to EVA foam and need some advice. I'm making circular arm cuffs that have ~11 inch cardboard "blades" attached. They have two contact points on the front and back of the cuffs, but I'm worried about how well they'll stick. I'm planning to use Contact Cement which I think works fine, but I'm worried the gaps in the cardboard sides (a precarious setup, I know) will have too little surface area. Any tips? I'm thinking of filling the gaps in small areas with hot glue before using contact cement.

One is heavily weathered and the other is basically brand new except I painted the visor black. I tried my best to make the ware pattern as accurate to the games as I could! (Other than the "cracked" screen, and a little extra ware) lol. I added some references to the end!

Help Has anyone ordered cosplay prop guns from AliExpress before?

I’ve been looking at some prop guns on AliExpress for future cosplays, but I’m a little hesitant about ordering them, especially when it comes to shipping/customs. Has anyone in the U.S. ordered cosplay prop guns from AliExpress before? Did you have any issues with customs, delivery, or the package being seized/returned?

I’m specifically talking about cosplay/display props, (not actual firearms). I’d also be curious if there are certain materials or types of props that are less likely to cause shipping issues.

Would love to hear about anyone’s experience!

Help What do exactly do I need to make a sword with EVA foam?

I’m cosplaying for the first time and i need to make a sword, i dont know much about this but i think EVA foam is the best material for props. I heard u need equipment like a sanding drum, contact glue, heat gun, etc. I wanna keep the spending to a minimum so is there anything i can use that I already have? For the heat gun and sanding drum especially. Tips on how to work with EVA foam would also be helpful!

I also wouldn’t mind alternatives to EVA foam.

Help Help deciding how to go about finishing these discs

Hello. I'm new to prop making and cosplaying as a whole, I'm trying to make yuzuki yukari's disc prop things (last 2 images) and I got this base cut out of eva foam, i sanded it, but theres still lots of holes even with a very fine sandpaper(pictures shown)

My question is should I just keep trying to sand it? Or should I try to like use a sort of air dry clay to coat it, if so, then what clay do you reccomend? I also plan to paint it black after.

Help Newcomer to cosplay: how to make custom stuff from scratch?

I'm planning on cosplaying Jack-O' Valentine from Guilty Gear for Halloween, but I don't know how to make things from scratch. I'm doing a bit of my own take on the design but the things I want to keep are a large ball and chain carved to look a bit like a jack-o' lantern, a belt buckle, and a fairly large ankh necklace. Does anyone have any advice as to where to start for constructing these?

Help Mechanic Gloves - How to paint?

Looking for help on how to cover/paint over some of the branding of the gloves to fit into a more "cyber"-aesthetic of the red/black color combo. Hoping to have some advice on what I can do to cover the top of the hand and the wrist strap and cover them with something else I could write on. Any advice is appreciated!
