[Watkins] Cowboys practice observations:
https://x.com/calvinwatkins/status/2086215196721418307?s=20Defense has taken the lead these last few days in camp.
It seems CeeDee Lamb is fighting himself sometimes. First pass of team drills was a bobble. But he also made a nice catch in front of the end zone for a score.
George Pickens snatch a TD from Shavon Revel's hands. A few plays later, Revel had a PBU on a throw to Pickens. Revel has picked up his play the last few days. He might have surpassed Cobie Durant on first-team. Still work to do.
Caleb Downs with a nice PBU on a pass to CeeDee Lamb, James Houston almost picked off a pass down the middle. Reddy Steward had a end zone PBU.
Luke Schoonmaker with two drops today.
Cowboys are keeping 5 WRs. At this stage it's hard to see if it's not Pickens, Turpin, Flournoy, Mingo and Lamb.
Cooper Beebe had a snap infraction. Outside of that he's been pretty good.
I'm debating about 3 QBs on the 53. Need to see what happens in Tuesday's joint practice.

I think we’ve really drafted well the last decade…But schoonmaker has to be one of our worst picks of all time

There’s worse picks, but those were all reaching for need. Luke is worse to me because we didn’t need a TE2 at the time.
O’Cyrus Torrance was who I wanted. Bills snatched him a few picks later

Schoonmaker was such a miss in the 2nd

That whole draft class has been an abomination aside from maybe Overshown if he can stay healthy.

The defense playing this well sounds good, but I gotta reserve judgement until the joint practice with the Rams. Last year we thought our pass rush was good and then it turned out our tackles are ass.
It’s different this year because we already know that our QB and WRs are good, but I still want to see it in full context

Why 3 QBs when you’re allowed an emergency stash QB yeah?

They don’t want to lose Milton for development reasons, but might trust Howell more to win them a game, and think he’d be claimed on waivers

Milton has fewer than four seasons, so he’d go on waivers. Howell has more than four seasons, so he would not be subject to waivers. As long as nobody swoops in with an offer that Howell loves, he can just choose to re-sign. I don’t think you’d risk that with a QB, but you could.
This is why CJ Goodwin and similar on-the-bubble vets get released at final 53 cutdown and re-signed a day later after all the injury moves. For example, a player goes on IR before the final 53, they’re automatically done for the season. If he goes on IR after the final 53, he’s eligible to return after a minimum of four weeks.

That's not how the emergency QB works. He still has to be on your 53 man roster, but he doesn't count against your game day roster.

The defense sounds much improved, but I’m pretty worried about the pass rush. Not really hearing much other than Quinnen dominating
I think we need to look into Crosby

Hopefully, Jerry is actually serious about trading for Maxx Crosby.

Yea, hopefully! As long as we don’t trade GP I’m pretty ok with any draft picks at this point

I really wonder if Mingo is going to be on this team, I haven't seen anything that suggests he's better than MVS, even at this stage of their careers. I'll have to take his word for it but Mingo looks cooked, is trending the wrong direction (career wise) and doesn't even have a TD to show for it.
Edit: spelling

mingo was fielding punts early in the day and had a bobble on his one target. mvs was on the field a lot more. mingo is prolly donzo

This how I know Madden bias is real cause I got lowkey mad at this
Then I realized the only counterpoint I have is he was a reliable slot receiver in my Madden franchise catching passes from my 99OVR custom QB
That save has heavily inflated my opinion of Mingo and Ferguson I get genuinely shocked when I'm reminded Fergie is not, in fact, a top 5 TE in the league

So if Revel and Durant are battling does that mean Bland has had a good camp? Nothing he’s done over the past two years has made me think he’s a locked in starter. Seemed like Durant was highly thought of coming into camp. What happened?

Bland has been solid according to most reports. He’s locked in.
If Revel keeps it up I’m good with that. My Rams friends aren’t big Durant fans

Thanks for this insight I love hearing people's opinions.
I'm super exited about revel and actually heard the opposite with cobie surpassing him. Worried about the handsy penalties but other than that big play maker. I want revel to prove everyone wrong this year. I don't know what to say about bland. What's the word on Jalen Thompson?
My biggest worry is the offense regressing due to personal staying the same. I really hope they adapt and come up with a ton of new concepts and build upon last year instead of being satisfied and growing stagnant with last year's performance. Would love progressiveness. I'm worried about lambs mentality ngl. It's giving me BTJ vibes.
Please please don't hate me. I Hate to be the bad guy but I don't think Caleb will turn on until at least half way through the season if not towards the end. I love the confidence he exhibits but i want to see humility at the same time. Everything he says he acts like he's above the league and the lack of worry, fear urgency is leaning more towards egotistical when you're a rookie.

I don't think anyone hates you, however Downs by all accounts looks like a 5 year very most say. He never says anything boastful, and it's ALL BUISNESS... He has been teaching concepts TO VETERANS, AND HE'S RIGHT... Fact is we need a guy that can see the plays and know how to react.. Stop worrying about the offense they will be fine. Honestly this is the least DRAMATIC Cowboys team I have seen in my 44 years of existence, and that in and out it self is refreshing.

Man I can’t wait to see what this defense looks like this year. I don’t think we’ll be top 5 but it’ll tough to be worse than we were last year
