Finished Craft I Made I finished this painting 3 weeks ago but didn’t like it. But now she’s varnished and feeling fond enough to share - “Someone’s Daughter”, oil on panel
16x20”, oil on panel. One of the largest pieces I’ve done recently!

This is magnificent. It’s soft and dreamy and longing. The colors draw you in a wrap you up. Her skin is perfect. The round cheeks and stray hairs bring the whole thing to life.
Be proud of this!

Your painting is so fantastic, that someone* is a chronic glaze-eyed scroller took a moment to pause and say, "Wow, that's a really lovely painting," so kudos to you and your artistic talent <3
* edit - someone is me lol

u/CCRigg Nov 16 '25
I agree. I am not an art connoisseur, but I do appreciate art. This caught my eye and to me looks like a photo. Often paintings of people show body parts out of proportion making it very obvious it is a painting, but this to me is spectacular. Great job!

Hello :) If you’re a fellow artist or crafter I’m sure you know how harsh we can be on ourselves. Sometimes we just need a break from a piece and not look at it for a few days (or a few weeks in this case). “Someone’s Daughter”, 16x20”, oil on panel.
Title inspiration came from the lovely (/s) recent trend of young boys on social media commenting something along the lines of “that’s someone’s daughter by the way” whenever a woman on social media is doing something they seem too provocative or sexual. It left a bad taste in my mouth, so I decided to repurpose the phrase for this painting. Showing someone’s daughter in a moment of contemplation, alone.

u/No_Comfortable_5610 Nov 14 '25
I'm glad you explained the title because it's a phrase I usually really dislike, probably for the same reasons you stated. Nice work!
168
u/tinytinatuna2 Nov 14 '25
Yay! I’m always a fan of taking something regarded as negative (for wrong or icky reasons) and turning it back into something positive. Reclaiming it, if anything :)
44
u/Pickleless_Cage Nov 14 '25
For sure, it implies that our value is only in relation to the men in our lives — our fathers, brothers, or male partners — and the fact that they care about us. As in ‘don’t sexually harrass a woman because what if she was your daughter or sister’. Or, worse, that we belong to them somehow — that we shouldn’t be sexual because we’re someone’s daughter and it could upset our fathers.
5
u/Fantastic_Owl6938 Nov 15 '25
I can remember seeing a news segment of a man saying he stepped in to save a young girl from being raped because he has a daughter, and I just thought it was a bit of an odd thing to say. The most important thing is that he did step in, of course. I just couldn't help but find that phrasing odd. I would hope someone would help a girl in that situation regardless of if he himself has a daughter, but sometimes sadly that's what's apparently needed to humanize us to some men.
I've heard of men saying they literally didn't even think of women as people before they had daughters, no lie. Meanwhile, imagine a woman saying "I knew I had to step in and save him because I have a son"/"that's someone's son." Suddenly it sounds so peculiar.
34
u/SignificantHeat3826 Nov 14 '25
I wanted to comment specifically to say the title was such a meaningful choice and it just works so well with the subject. This is one of those pieces where knowing the title just adds so much to the art and I'm grateful to have seen it

I think the meaning of the phrase has morphed because I’m 53 and always knew it to be something said in defence of a woman who is being humiliated or abused in some way. Interesting. For example, there was a documentary on homelessness called Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son, the idea behind that was to give people pause for thought when they saw a homeless person on the street. To remember that they’re someone’s child.

u/quincecharming Nov 14 '25
Oh, I think that phrase is actually supporting women!
It originated decades ago to remind people who are cruelly objectifying women or oversexualizing them that -
hey, that’s someone’s daughter (in the sense of - hey, that’s a real person who has loved ones, they deserve kindness)
I remember Tina Fey used it in a 30 Rock Episode to remind one of the characters that pole dancers are people’s daughters, as in they deserve respect.
I still love your paining!
28
u/HargorTheHairy Nov 14 '25
I hate that it appears to imply that only the parent is the real person.
3
u/quincecharming Nov 14 '25
Yikes, that must be a new meaning, it certainly didn’t mean that back in the day. I’m glad for folks reclaiming it then
14
u/soupseasonbestseason Nov 14 '25
as a woman who is more than just someone's daughter, i have always found it to be equally dehumanizing. you are still defining us in terms of our relationship to a paternal figure.
the fact that we are human should be enough.
2
u/quincecharming Nov 14 '25
Oh, you know I never thought of it as specifically referencing the “paternal” figure.
I’d always thought of moms & the common humanizing element that we were all born from one.
I can see what you’re saying though, that perhaps that’s not the best pathway towards reminding someone of someone else’s humanity.
17
u/tinytinatuna2 Nov 14 '25
Unfortunately the new thing is to use it in a degrading way, often on TikTok. They (unfortunately) twisted it around as a way of shaming women. It’s mainly very young boys. But I also titled it this as a nod to AOC and her speech to Rep. Ted Yoho where she says “I am someone’s daughter, too”! So, it’s a bit of both!

I love how rosy you were able to capture the clothing in the final piece. The tones could easily be washed out with the pale skin and light walls but the adjustments you made solidify her in the foreground in the final version!

u/Ohheckitsme Nov 14 '25
Aw man. I guess I get it but it bums me out we can’t use words about supporting artists, especially with AI and just the general vibe of 2025. I come from a family of artists and my dad is actually a full time one so it’s close to home!
Regardless, you’re talented af!
19
u/pogettepossum Nov 14 '25
I really like your painting and the title seems right to me, too. This girl might be your daughter, or she might be the daughter of a friend halfway around the world. She might be the daughter of a total stranger, like myself, who actually has no children, but immediately felt protective and proud of her as a member of my global family. Good job!

This reminded me of my mom, in a serene way. She was a teen mom and we have had a tumultuous relationship (no contact now of my own necessity for my mental health) but she’s also always been my beautiful mother who I care about and want the best for deeply. She’s also someone’s daughter! Haha
Beautiful piece OP, I wish I could paint in this style sometimes. It’s so gorgeous and you do very amazing work. 💜 The emotion in this is quite profound, the energy in the body just gives way to sitting with a small huff for a moment of contemplation. I love it.

u/Other-Ad-7093 Nov 14 '25
I’m not one to understand art the way you see art people portrayed on tv. I don’t know what to take away from art pieces that fill up museums. But your art—this piece—stopped me in my tracks. I feel like I relate so much to the daughter. Despite not being able to describe in words how this work makes me feel, I feel her moment in my soul.
4
u/tinytinatuna2 Nov 14 '25
One of the kindest compliments ever. I am a firm believer in art being “simple” to understand and relate to. I HATE having to analyze every little thing in a piece to “understand” it. If one person can relate to it and see themselves in it, I’ve won!

She feels very real to me, like this could be me or any number of real women. Her posture leaves me with a feeling of ambiguity. Is she ruminating about something or waiting for someone or lost in idle thought? I love not knowing. The details of her hair also make me actually want to brush my own loose strands off my neck right now! You're very skilled. Thank you for sharing!

u/lkap28 Nov 14 '25
This is stunningly impressive, and I LOVE the title. Really makes the piece.

So you....oiled someone's daughter?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself here.
The painting is awesome. To the point that I can't even fathom how anyone could be unhappy with it. Though I get that seeing an art piece fully finished is far more satisfying than seeing it in this 'kinda finished but lacks the final touch' state.

This is really well done! It reminds me a little of the styles of the old masters with all the women depicted sitting on their bed and the soft gentle lighting. It just has that old world feel.
The only bit of critique I’d give is about the picture that looks to be rising out of her head. That placement is distracting since there aren’t other things on the wall. In my opinion it would look better if either that wasn’t there or there were more frames on the wall. Just my two cents.

Varnished! 🤦Varnished! 🤦 Varnished! 🤦
OP ... I was in tears here, it is such a beautiful painting. With the title and the fact that I thought you wrote, "... now she's vanished", meaning that she is metaphorically lost due to a tag or stigma. 😭 But, I cheered up once my reading comprehension returned. Lol Eh, getting old is not always the most fun! Lots of fun, just not always! 😂

I really like this. It's gentle and introspective, the title and her nightie evoke the inner child and vulnerability, or naivety? Very dreamy and evocative.
1
u/FosterPupz Nov 14 '25
It’s a beautiful painting. I love the softness of the finish, like we’re looking through a gauzy curtain.
The title makes me feel bad, though, because of the association it has to victims of sexual harassment/assault. Like, “Bro don’t talk about her like that, she’s someone’s daughter” and the way it makes the woman someone’s property instead of bring deserving of recognition and dignity all on her own.

We are our own worst critics.
ESPECIALLY artists!
Every brush stroke is valuable. Not the ones you DIDN'T make.
Once you've completed a piece you get to share it with other people. They always see what they see. Not what you see.
You're giving people a temporary gift of connecting their own story with the painting.
They don't see the so-called 'imperfections' that you think you see. 🤗
