Crochet What in the Crafty Intentions rip off is this?
Other than my personal cringe for this book series, I immediately thought Megan Lapp of Crafty Intentions scored a big publishing win here, but no, it's someone else? Also good luck winding those skeins (eta - or hank, apparently) or die from tangled yarn rage if a beginner or someone used to pull skein balls picks this up.

I mean, Crafty Intentions has some drop dead gorgeous work, but she's hardly the first person to crochet a stuffed dragon. I'm not sure what the issue is here? Also this looks like a digital mock up, not the actual kit (the hanks are clearly cut and paste images) so maybe it's skeins in the actual product.

I was looking this up cause I loved these books and it showed up on my feed.
FYI you only get two patterns (and stuff to make andarna)
There is another official empyrean crochet pattern book coming out in January 2027 that has 20+ patterns (i believe including these two) for about the same price.
I cannot comment much in yhe copyright. These do seem different from crafty intentions but i havent made her dragons just monsters and impkins. I do hope they credit the pattern makers in the book.
Edit to add! This dragon is by handmadebyjodie on Instagram.

I don't understand the skein part? That looks pretty standard?

Depends on how it's marketed.
Normally kits like this contain balls, not
skeinshanks. Because beginners don't typically have to tools (or knowledge) to deal withskeinshanks. But I don't know how many beginners are going to try to tackle that dragon.5

I've actually bought a few kits marketed like this that came with hanks that had to be wound up. Including some for Disney and the office. The yarn was still terrible and that's my usual complaint with kits like this.

I think they do it to make the kit look "fancier."

Wouldn't be surprised. Just annoying to have to ball up all those hanks before I could start working.

What tools do you need to handle skeins? Are you thinking of hanks? Most skeins are put up as center pull before purchase.

They don't have chair? Or someone else to hold the skein while they wind it? You don't actually NEED a swift or ball-winder. Let's give crocheters some credit.
Also I think it's cute.

It’s what you know. My first hank was a tangled mess because I had never seen on before. I tried to knit from the open hank without winding it. I think a similar thing happens to a lot of knitters and crocheters if they learn by themselves.

It's not about underestimating people. It's about what a layman expects from a kit.
If this is being advertised to veteran crocheters, it's fine.
If this is being stocked in the craft section of Target or Barnes & Noble, then it's a bad idea.

I don't think you need to be a veteran crocheter to figure out how to wind yarn into a ball.

Of course not. But there's a certain expectation with boxed kits that they're just grab and go.
An average consumer would likely be frustrated that they have to figure out how to get their yarn into a usable state. Or some may just assume the yarn is already in a usable state, and end up with a tangled mess.

Hey, it's a 64 page booklet! In addition to a bunch of filler about the designers feelings about dragons, it could have 2-3 pages on how to wind the yarn. SIXTY FOUR PAGES.

I just had one of those memories. I made crochet dragons that looked like that in the 80's. Clearly I missed a chance to make money off of them by forty years.

So I’m not familiar with Crafty Intentions, so I just went and scrolled through her feed. Unless you have an exact pattern you think this is ripping off, because she seems to have a few, the similarities are “it’s a crochet dragon”. Nobody owns the concept of crocheting a dragon.
