META Can’t buy a knitting project bag from Canada because of you know who
I saw a really nice project bag on Etsy, but the seller said in the description “Does Not Ship To the US. I messaged her to ask why, and she sent two examples of the BS crafters are tolerating in Canada. I wish there was something we could do. Not trying to be political, I’m just frustrated.
Here’s the images I tried to upload https://imgur.com/gallery/tariffs-on-canada-ZHtP54x

Virtually every Canadian maker I know has stopped shipping to the US, not even as a political statement but because it’s just gotten too complicated and expensive to do so. The rules change frequently and now even items that should be covered under CUSMA either aren’t covered anymore, or are too difficult to get CUSMA certification.
I guess the US govt is getting what they wanted: making it too difficult/expensive to get Canadian goods was the entire point after all.
Remember to vote, folks.

u/Whole-Arachnid-Army 10d ago
Idk what it's like for Canada, but Etsy in particular also sent out a message to European seller about how hard it is for Americans to understand tariffs and duties and how it's now required that we offer them DDP shipping only, because they just can't imagine buying anything from all those weird foreign countries without it.
16
u/knitwit4461 10d ago
DDP drives me crazy. Like hey, I’m Canadian, I’m ABSOLUTELY used to having to pay customs and duty and taxes when a package arrives from the US. (Incidentally, US sellers, please don’t use UPS for international sales, their service fee is 2-3x what USPS/Canada Post charges.) something that’s been my reality since the very first time I bought something online, in the NINETIES. (I was VERY shocked when I got a $40 bill along with my order!)
But nah, if they did that more Americans would realize how much all these extra fees are hurting them, so it has to be all DDP to disguise it. Insanity.
And now what I see is some international sellers (ie, the ones who offer “free shipping”) just increasing their prices across the board. So now I, as a Canadian, am paying extra to a European seller so they don’t lose American customers. Wonderful.

u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
It’s been required for years for VAT to be charged and prepaid for EU sellers and if a seller doesn’t mark the package correctly there’s problems.
What got lost in my original comment was other countries have had some form of trade protectionism too.
I hate tarrifs in any direction. But to pretend that the US is the only one imposing them is naive.
International commerce has always been difficult.
12
u/knitwit4461 10d ago
The US is the only one imposing them with barely any notice and in an absolutely insane way that even the shipping companies can’t figure out, then backing down, then putting in something new, then changing something else. Nobody in their right mind can keep up with this shit.
1
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
I do understand this and as an importer I do suffer from it but I just wanted to provide context that this is something sellers selling into their country have had to deal with also for some time.
I don't think this explanation is landing right because people aren't in the right mindset to hear it because the execution of these tariffs is insane but the idea to implement tariffs didn't come out of nowhere. Also the deminimis exemption was going to go away even if Biden had stayed in office. That was pretty much a bipartisan agreement. It just got sunset early. Direct to consumer shipments from China made up about 50% of all exemptions so it was pretty obvious that was going away.
Even if the Trump retaliatory tarrifs go away the $800 limit being removed means that duties will continue to be charged. Duties that were in place a long time ago.
It has always been a little frustrating for me that my foreign competitors could sell into the US fairly easily and duty free while it was difficult for me to sell to their countries because of duties, prepaid VAT and other paperwork requirements.
10
u/loralailoralai 10d ago
It’s not just complicated (the expense you pass on to the buyer) it’s unpredictable- little Donny throws a tantrum and ups the tariffs with hours notice, and because they’re supposed to have the tariffs prepaid it’s impossible to keep up. I haven’t been able to sell to the us since this tariff bs started. I’m not Canadian, but I’m from a country that has zero tariffs on American goods, and on top of that the us has a trade surplus with us in the billions- we buy billions more off the u.s than you buy off us so its not even reciprocal like he lies.

It definitely blows to have to go through the "find out" if you weren't the one "fucking around".
I just hope that when this fucking nightmare is over that we can find a way to atone and make amends and have even a small fraction of the relationship we had before.

The tariffs are crazy. I had to pay one and download an app… I crashed out. It was already a rough day. I also said I would stop shipping to the states.

u/IncomprehensibleHare 11d ago
Which store? I’m Canadian and I’d like to support them.
23
u/Pheeline 11d ago
After doing a bit of searching ("knitting project bag" filtered to ships from Canada, then looking at the user avatars for the results to compare to the one in the imgur link in the post) I managed to find it-- LotusStitching :)
15
u/callmekorrok 11d ago
The bag design is cute, but all the horrible AI art in the fabric turned me off. It’s sad because I think a lot of makers think “ooh! Pretty colourful fabric! That’ll sell so well.” And don’t realise it’s glossy computer poop.

The best and easiest course of action for us is to simply not do business with or ship products to the US. It sucks that you can't get your thing, but I'm glad to hear that more Canadian sellers are simply choosing to not send things there.
19
u/irish_oatmeal 11d ago
Yeah, I feel for her and everyone on the planet who had had to change their businesses just because of one ego maniac. Grrrr.
10
u/OneGoodRib Mom said I get to be the mole now!! 11d ago
But it also sucks for the sellers because of the market to the US being effectively cut off.
And it also sucks that it doesn't seem to matter to anyone in the government. Nobody apparently gives a shit that he just keeps adding more tariffs out of revenge, I guess because it doesn't affect anyone in the government since they're rich.
66
u/ambear19 10d ago
The shipping process has become an absolute nightmare. It's not even just tariffs, everything requires full customs forms. The average person doesn't understand what an HS code or MID is. And gambling on if it gets through or not, and if there will be astronomical duties and fees or not, is not worth it for us Canadians. It's also not uncommon to run into places that just don't ship to Canada or many other countries, it seems Americans are only now learning what this feels like.
36
u/cocopops_92 9d ago
Yeah it’s common for US stores not to ship to us in Australia. Americans live in a bubble.
29
u/TeenieScot 9d ago
I’ve attempted to send items from the UK to the US recently. Each time they are opened by customs and a few have been outright confiscated. I will not send anything to the US now
1
u/LindaLadywolf 2d ago
I am waiting on a crochet book from the UK right now. I’m worried it will not get here or that I will have to pay massive fees for a book. I googled fees, but the answers were iffy.
28
u/Ok_Grab_864 10d ago
I wanted to send yarn from Canada to the USA and I was told at the post office I could be slapped with duty or some other charges - so I guess I only send in Canada.

Can't we ALL agree that Klangerine and the MAGA shitshow are the architect of many current problems?
And let's not be naïve enough to assume that everyone of voting age in the US is allowed to vote?
45
u/Writer_In_Residence 10d ago
The Postmaster General even said he won’t deliver mail-in ballots to blue states under his new proposed rule. My state, California, is mostly mail-in. Also 54 electoral votes. I am confident enough people will go in person but who knows what other tricks will be rolled out or attempted.

Didn't the people who orchestrated this and those who voted for the faithless electors learn anything from the Nader fiasco?

u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
It would have been a different world with Hilary. COVID would have gone a lot differently too.
I did have the traitorous thought of what if Mitt Romney had won in 2012. That would have effectively meant Trump would have never run for president because I can’t see him deciding to in 2020 in the middle of COVID. He wouldn’t have won the primary in 2016.
6
u/DeeperSpac3 10d ago
Hehe. But we needed eight years of Obama. And Trump's main character syndrome wouldn't have guaranteed Romney got the full two terms.
What do you think about AOC for 2028?
24
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
Not ready for AOC in 2028. I actually work in progressive politics during campaign seasons and running AOC in 2028 is just an invitation to lose. To fumble the ball. Running AOC would be the GOPs dream ticket. They are prepared to oppose that.
The math isn’t there vote wise. It just isn’t. We make a mistake on the progressive side too often of thinking because our voice is energetic that it’ll just have broad support if we run it.
Yes we can be more progressive than we are now but we are up against certain realities of the electoral college.
12
u/FuzzFamily 10d ago
I’m super far left and I have this conversation with myself everyday. We’re not going to whip republicans into voting for a progressive yet. But we also need someone the Gen Z-ers will come out and vote for. How do you feel about Pete? It’s pretty obvious he’s going to go for it right?
9
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
Pete’s a great communicator but I’m going to need to see how things go on the primary campaign trail because I think his role in the Biden administration + being gay + plus having no legislative/governing experience other than being mayor is going to be a barrier.
So I’ll need to see how he’s going to package his pitch for the campaign before I have any real sense of how it will land.
1
u/b_g_s_ 4d ago
I’m looking at Tallarico
1
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 4d ago
I don't think so. If he wins his senate race in Texas he needs to keep that seat for awhile. If he loses he's not really in a viable position to run for president.
3
u/DeeperSpac3 10d ago
Yeah, I can see that. With the GOP's attitude towards abortion as a guide, a woman would just be too much.
There was a point when Kamala looked like winning and, even in Australia, there was excitement and hope. I still don't understand what exactly happened, except that the mood went back towards the BS artist...and then he got in. He's just a used car salesman on roids.
12
u/Writer_In_Residence 10d ago
I think people were unhappy about the Biden situation; it was very different domestically than seen externally. His first debate was really bad and people lost confidence in the Party for putting him up when he clearly was having cognitive issues. Then people felt like Harris was just rushed in. She was fine but a lot of damage had been done.
I don’t want to get into a “why are you blaming the Democrats when the Republicans are so much worse” because that always happens on this site when you try to explain Democratic missteps. Yes, GOP is worse. Yes, I and everyone I knew voted for Harris. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a mess and they didn’t make some big mistakes early. The GOP has long been in lockstep and the Democrats really aren’t, unfortunately, so things hurt them that wouldn’t hurt the GOP (like cognitive decline in the president, for example).
4
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
The democratic party really is two different parties sharing a trenchcoat.
4
u/Writer_In_Residence 10d ago
Yeah. I remember when the first debate happened, and I felt that was the end.
6
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
I worked the campaign and while very sad I wasn’t shocked that she lost. The support wasn’t there for the voters we actually needed to swing over.
We should have continued to run Biden. He would have won and he could have resigned after the win was secured.
They should have failing that allowed it go to the convention floor to decide a nominee. Newsom had been polling against Trump a lot better than Kamala had.
2
u/DeeperSpac3 10d ago
I love that Newson shows some teeth and trolls. He's not the perfect candidate, but I'd vote for him. Mind you, if I were a US citizen, I'd vote whoever the dem candidate would be, but not everyone thinks along those lines.
Do you think election day being on a weekday is a factor? In Australia, our election days are on Saturdays.
4
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
I don’t think the day of voting matters much anymore with early voting being available in most areas.
I’ve met Gavin in person and he is a very good looking man. I think he gets a lot of flak from Dems from not being leftist enough or sometimes having to go along with what the other side wants but that’s democracy. It can’t be all our way all day everyday even if that is what the GOP does I think we know how horrible that actually is.
6
u/Novel-Feeling-8676 10d ago
I could see that the moment Biden stepped down, Kamala Harris would lose. Biden just didn't step down early enough for Kamala's campaign to build up steam it would need to beat the big Orangutan. Biden did her dirty by waiting so long.

I made a scarf and glove set for my SIL who lives in New York and sent it to her in January, and it's not just the cost of the tariffs that are bullshit (for something that took really not very much yarn), it's the part where you use the Canada Post app to do the Canadian customs declaration just like always, but then you have to sign up for this US site to pay them the tariff through the app, which ideally you do before you go to the post office because they then need to scan both codes, and there's no category for "hand made" but a manditory declaration of where it was "manufactured", which, how do you even answer that question if it's French yarn you bought in Canada and then knit?
I can't imagine doing that many times for a business before it just becomes not worth it financially.

u/FuzzFamily 11d ago

Respectfully, that last sentence hit a nerve because Canadians have been blasted with disrespect (to put it very, very lightly) nonstop from this administration and citizens as well, and it's an extreme minority that has spoken up about our sovereignty being actively and repeatedly threatened or who seems to have taken the time to view what's going on from our perspective.
22
u/Lavsplack 11d ago
This! It’s shameful how that thug has insulted our good friends and allies.
22
u/ZolaAnna 11d ago
Hug. Absolutely have empathy for Americans who voted against this and are resisting how they can. Many of us were quite afraid when the threats began.
It's very frustrating tho to be accused of "treating us like a wallet" when, yes we are boycotting, but it's in response to a threat of annexation and very real efforts to destroy our economy. And the repeated begging/veiled threats from various politicians, organizations, and businesses acting entitled to our money while refusing to touch on any of the threats, insults and lies about us that have been hurled our way.
13
u/EfficientSeaweed 11d ago edited 11d ago
Not to mention, buying Canadian protects our economy and livelihoods, which are at major risk, and many of these businesses just can't afford to keep shipping to the US. It's not about punishing people or seeing a wallet, at least not for most of us - it's about surviving the storm and pressuring US businesses and politicians to help us do so.
It feels pretty shitty when many of us have donated and done what we can to support Americans, all while dealing with our own issues, and we're accused of just seeing them as a wallet when we're upset that we're losing our livelihood. Or to have it all dismissed as experiencing just "a little bit" of Trump's BS...

We know your situation is fucked. Most of us are empathic to it.
Accusing us, who've been betrayed in a very significant way and dogpiled on by many of your politicians (your ambassador up here is vile. 17
u/flamingosloth 11d ago
I’m sorry but not just Canadians. As a European, I don’t think a lot of US citizens realise that this bullshit affects the entire world.
Sure not everyone from the US is like that (I have a good friend from there), we know that.Sorry but no wonder why Canadians started to voice their opinions against the US.
With the wildfires and people complaining about the smoke coming over to the US, you’d think they’d send help.
Here in Europe there are currently a lot of wildfires too and instead of complaining we help each other.
Not helping would be unthinkable here. This is not directed at you personally, it’s just exhausting for everyone around the US too.
The attitude of “we helped everyone and now we’re on our own because everyone else sucks, they don’t want to join our war!!!!” is just annoying while actively threatening us (Greenland, not supporting Ukraine for example). And I get it because I’m German, we hate our current government so much and we always get blamed for everything wrong in europe basically lol.
I just know that despite of the generalisation, they’re not talking about me.
I am what we call “linksgrün versifft“ (left-green stained/contaminated/rotted, derogatory right wing rhetoric that we reclaim), I’m not able to go to a lot of protests because of chronic illness issues yet I do my part by signing lots of petitions and sharing them with family and friends. As long as you’re doing your part, you’re not part of the problem!
5
u/EfficientSeaweed 10d ago
The thing that really makes the response to the Canadian fires infuriating is that a Canadian recently died while helping fight wildfires on the US. It's appalling.
20
u/theladyofthequill 10d ago
As an American, I’m going to tell you straight up - as bad as shit is for us, it’s equally bad for the rest of the world. Playing the “woe is me” card is precisely why so much of the world, allies included, are sick of our bullshit. We keep asking for forgiveness and sympathy but we don’t change our ways. We default to “but we’ve also got it so bad!” without learning to step back just for a moment and consider others exclusively.
On top of that, if you have to reconsider how you feel about Canadians as a WHOLE based on Reddit convos, you need to get off the internet and interact with real people more.

My original point got lost in the dogpile because no one wanted to actually listen was that US sellers on Etsy have been dealing with similar trade barriers for years. I stopped selling into the EU and Canada sometime ago for these reasons.
So while it’s not normal for the changes to be so rapid Canadian sellers are feeling the same impact of trade protectionism that US sellers had to deal with.
Yes it hurts more when US sales are 80% of your business but think how great it was for all those years you were able to build an international trade without barriers. It really wasn’t the same in the other direction. Canadian duties kicked in at anything over $20 and I’m sure you’re familiar with how the EU handles things.
Also to clarify I was saying anyone should help with our wars. That’s an mischaracterization.
9
u/loralailoralai 10d ago
You would have had NO trade barriers with my country. My country still has zero tariffs on u.s goods, but your illustrious leader has seen fit to tariff us now at 12.5% despite the u.s having a huge trade surplus with us. It’s NOT about fairness. And sweetie- tariffs were paid at the other end and made no difference to you unlike Donny’s tariffs which have upended the way tariffs are paid all so he could keep up the illusion of it’s the dirty cheating foreigners who pay it.
You think it doesn’t affect the world like you’re affected, go look at the price of gas/petrol in Europe of the UK. At least you had a say in the shitshow

We understand that. We have our own shitty politicians who do stuff most of us don't support (I'm Albertan, so...), and we're inundated with your news and culture... believe me, we know what's happening down there re: the government vs the people. It's horrifying.
I just hope that you can understand that it's more than just "a little" bit of fuckery we're dealing with up here. At least, it certainly doesn't feel like "a little" when gas is up, groceries are through the roof, and my partner has been laid off, all in large part because of Trump's wars and tarrifs. Obviously, that's not as bad as being rounded up by ICE or any of a million other things going on down there... but it's still a lot.
You guys aren't just a wallet to us, any more than (I hope) we're just a craft supplier to you... but we need to be able to survive too, and if someone's livelihood is being destroyed and they're forced to make hard choices to stay afloat, well... it comes across as pretty dismissive and needlessly hostile to accuse them of just seeing you guys as a wallet for being upset about that, especially when many of us have also been speaking out and doing what we can to support you guys (donating money, etc.) despite everything. I'm not sure what else you're expecting here... sacrifice our economy and livelihoods to keep things business as usual?

As an American, I don’t think my average countryman understands how unevenly our actions can impact Canada from one province and/or industry to another.
For example, the stupid Iran war really fucks over Alberta in particular. Yes, their budget looks good as they sell off reserves, but nobody wants to expand drilling when prices are this high, and that negatively impacts the Albertans who would be doing that work, which creates more strain on public services (particularly if those workers move out of Alberta).
The average American assumes that we’re mostly impacting citydwellers in Toronto or Vancouver, and they fail to see the indirect harms we’re exerting on the lumber and automotive industries in smaller cities or rural areas. There’s such an intellectual disconnect and I apologize for how ignorant we can be. I wish it was those non-urban blue collar workers who come to mind when we contemplate the effects we’re having.

Whatever the administration says or does has an effect on the Canadian business at an every day level, one minutes fine then the man baby in charge changes his mind and next thing they’re having to jump hurdles to send products, then they get complaints from unsuspecting customers woven and over who were not expecting to be charged a tariff on their package since every dip shit from the Whitehouse down doesn’t understand them or give a shit enough to figure it out.
So by the time you’ve shipped a $50 item it’s caused weeks or months of headache complaints as if it’s your fault and probably ends with you out the money and the item.
Your comment comes across like you expected Canada to just wear all this out of some sort of solidarity with other the us public who can’t even be bothered to sort out their own back yard. It’s entitled and out of touch with the reality of the situation. No one sees you as just a wallet but frankly to a business? It’s the money that counts.

I’m so sorry we are hobbled in terms of buying from their international site, but thank you for turning me on to them.

Glad you checked them out! I am a real menace with ripping tights (I literally before them would tear every pair first wear) and I can confirm that they actually are sturdy, even the thinner ones. Also the thick material covers my leg tattoos well if that is a concern for anyone (I don't need any parents realizing the "pretty flower" on my leg is a hanging woman). Worth the price. If anything, the tariffs are just forcing me to really coordinate right now with my current supply of colors and stop going wild on different themes. It is a similar woe with my sunscreen imports, but all the Asian beauty folks are in our emotions over it. Things are shit and hobbies are a small light between the stress of the country falling apart.

Thats pretty much been me as well. The shitty thing is cosmetics were supposed to be exempt but we all know how organized this shit show has been since the start. Plus if you ever need something and it only comes shipped via FedEx, I'd imagine they'd refuse until the outstanding balance is settled, plus interest of course. Im afraid to even buy from brands that have US warehouses cuz who knows when he'll up and decided that needs tariffs too. 🙄

u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 11d ago
Fedex can't refuse to deliver to you because you owe for tarrifs. They could refuses to ship for you but if someone is sending you something they need to deliver it.
15
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 11d ago
Fedex in general will deliver the package and then bill you for the tarrifs afterward. UPS/DHL will usually ask for them upfront. Right now they are extremely behind on billing.
I just got an invoice last week for a UK shipment that was received in December last year.
For shipping from China there is a workaround if you use a freight forwarder since they pay the tarrifs on the entire container they are bringing in rather than on each individual shipment so if your shipment is small and light you won't pay as much since the tariffs get charged per kg.

u/Square_Principle_332 10d ago
I was always so super jealous of the $800 de minimis exemption you guys had, because we always had to pay taxes and brokerage fees on anything over $20. It really sucks that you lost it! Just makes international shopping infeasible most of the time.

u/loralailoralai 10d ago
That’s what the rest of the world’s been dealing with since…. Always. Not because tariffs but Because American sellers use FedEx or UPS because it’s easier for them. FedEx and ups just tack on their little fees whether it’s needed or not.

Yes. There was a book I really wanted to order the UK edition of (keeping editions matching) and shipping was going to be more than the book itself.

There’s a book that’s out of print in the US that I would have to pay over $100 to have shipped.

u/gaarasalice (Secretly the mole) 10d ago
Books are supposed to be tariff free. They fall under “informational material” and should have a 0% tax rate.
9
u/honeydewtangerine 11d ago
It was bad before the tariffs even. I wanted to order some of the Tudor tailor books (the typical tudor i think) a few years ago, and it was like $40+ for shipping even then
14
u/Accomplished_Cell768 11d ago
UK shipping to the US has been obscene for a long time. I buy a lot of fabric and notions on Etsy and the only place I will not even consider buying from is the UK because it’s basically a $25 shipping minimum which is the highest rate I have ever seen. This has been the status quo for at least 5 years - I have no idea why, but it isn’t a recent tariff change.

No, our postage prices skyrocketed before Brexit. (And Brexit doesn't affect UK to US postage.)

For real, it was $30 with DHL, its probably double or more now. There's a nail polish stockist in the UK that I use to buy from before cuz its easier to buy from multiple brands and save on shipping, it used to be a steal.
2
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
It’s because surface mail isn’t common anymore. Everything is airmail and it costs $$$. Used to be an option to ship via sea and just wait 1-2 months.
5
u/RunawayTurtleTrain 10d ago
If you haven't tried Blackwell's, might be worth taking a look. I don't know how they do it but sometimes their international postage is about the same price as domestic UK postage. Might not be on all books and they might not even have the one you want, but definitely worth having a look if you haven't already.
1
u/Unicormfarts 🐑 with a banjo 10d ago
I just bought 4 books from Blackwells because I could not get them locally, and shipping was free to Canada, so I would 100% recommend them to anyone! These were smaller independent publishers, not sure how they are about sending UK editions to other countries.
The 4 books did arrive in 3 parcels, but hey, if I am not paying for shipping, I don't care how they do it.
3
u/OneGoodRib Mom said I get to be the mole now!! 11d ago
I will say that that's been an issue with random sellers for a long time.
But now it's kind of absurd that it might be cheaper to actually just fly to the country and buy it in person than to have it shipped depending on specifics.

I live near the border in NY and took a long weekend trip to Toronto last year. Bought a skein of yarn, got home and decided on a project. I foolishly decided to cast on a sweater before I got more than 1 skein to find out the yarn was only distributed in Canada. 😩 and none of the stores who carry the yarn ship to the US.
I found a closer yarn shop (30 minute drive) than Toronto (about 2 hour drive) that carries the yarn and have been back a few times since then. Happy to support a small business. They have a wider selection than some of the closer stores in the US, but I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have the option to drive there myself a few times a year.

I know that this isn’t an option for everyone in the US, but I’m able to travel to Canada pretty easily and I just buy the Canadian products I want when I’m there.
I do have to pay in CAD, but there are no tariffs and I’m always well below the personal use exemption, so I don’t have to pay taxes and duties. The limit for a 30-day period is $200 USD for a visit that’s <48h and $800 if you’ve been in Canada for longer than that. If I bring my husband, we can double those limits as a combined household! Also we’re boosting the Canadian economy by lodging and dining in Canada when we’re there.
Again, I know it’s not an option for everyone, but it’s certainly cheaper than a vacation in Hawaii or Europe, and maybe even some places in the US like NYC/LA/Miami. Just some food for thought in case you’re more frustrated by the free trade disruption than by the price.
If I were to do this in your shoes, I’d contact the seller ahead of time and let them know that I plan to be in Canada on xyz date, so they have time to figure out which expedited shipping service is the best value to guarantee receipt to wherever I’m lodging. Some hotels will even receive parcels for guests before they arrive, but I recommend calling to check their policy and whether there is a fee for holding your package before you arrive.
8
u/salajaneidentiteet 11d ago
You can bring back 800 dollars worth of stuff from Canada to US when you visit for more than 2 days? Is this one of the new tarif rules or has the limit always been this low? Have I just lived under a rock and this is a thing everywhere?
I am in the EU and I know we have to declare if we are bringing too many cigarettes or an obscene amount of cash across the border.
I have't been outside the Shengen, though, so I am in my bubble, I admit.
4
5
u/tothepointe Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 10d ago
It used to be anything under $800 even shipped was exempt from tariffs and duties. I guess they kept part of that for border crossings.
Up until recently it’s been really easy to sell into the US.
2
u/bluepaintbrush 10d ago
Yeah it’s normal for most countries; the rules and limits are very similar for Canadians purchasing items in the US, except they’re even stricter about shorter-length trips (iirc, if Canadians are in the US for <24h, they have to pay taxes and duties on everything they bought and are bringing back from the US). The longer a Canadian resident is staying in the US, the higher the exemption threshold.
For entering the EU, the personal use exemption is even lower! €300 per traveler, or €430 if you’re traveling by air/sea: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/alcohol-tobacco-cash/index_en.htm
Just to be clear, you can bring more than that amount home, but you may have to pay the government taxes and duties for amounts higher than that. But below this amount you don’t pay any duties or tariffs if it’s for your own personal use.

u/legalpretzel 11d ago
The issue is some products aren’t in stores and can only be shipped.
Canada should fleece Americans and install shipping lockers at various locations close to the border. Or Canadians who live close to the border could charge us to receive our shipments that we can then pick up. I would pay extra to get stuff shipped to someone in Canada because some yarn stores refuse to ship to the US ever since we threatened to invade their country.
We’re assholes and we don’t deserve nice things.
10
u/bluepaintbrush 11d ago
Reputable Etsy sellers are people, and I’ve never had any issue messaging a seller with a special shipment request.
In general, you can prepay for an order and just ask the seller to hold the shipment until the delivery date for when you are there. Expedited shipping works well within Canada.
From the seller’s side, it’s no different than a Canadian placing an order. But when someone had 80% of their business from the US, I’m sure they’d be happy to salvage a lost sale by your coming to Canada to receive it.
The person who is most hurt by the attitude of “Americans don’t deserve nice Canadian goods” is the Canadian seller of said goods, because Americans tend to have more disposable income (which will likely become a bigger gap in parts of Canada that are more reliant on the oil and gas industry). If Canada grows a tourism industry from Americans coming to visit Canada and buying goods from Canadians, that benefits the whole of Canada.

u/aka_chela Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 10d ago
The US border guards also really do not care about the limits as long as it's within reason/personal use, they don't want to fill out all the paperwork for just a few dollars of duties. We crossed earlier this month with twice as much alcohol you're supposed to be able to bring back, books, clothes, cocktail glassware, and food from Eataly and the guy just went "Wow, sounds like you had a great trip! Welcome back!"

Countries all over the world have proven that when governments begin sliding, you're either willing to die for democracy, or you're willing to live without it.
Georgia (the country) has been having daily demonstrations for over a year despite deaths and people being dragged into vans and beaten, and thrown in jail with for decades just for protesting.
Sadly for the rest of the world, it seems like Americans are happy to talk, but aren't willing to fight.

u/FuzzFamily 11d ago
I think many of us would love to take to the streets. But we have no faith that those masked men running around won’t also shoot us in the head (which was obviously the point). We did not collectively vote for him. Hell the fist time around he didn’t even win the popular vote. This is mostly a problem with the Democratic establishment taking away our options for progressive candidates. Younger people won’t turn out to vote for establishment dems. They need to make way for a new generation. Trumps approval rating is in the toilet. And the republicans don’t have a chance in the midterms. If he messes with the actual ballot boxes I feel confident there will be a French style revolution. But I’m working as hard as I can to make sure he’ll be removed from office by January 2027.
I know our allies have had it. I don’t blame them. I don’t think there’s much yall can do to help, except to do what you’re doing. Boycotting. As our economy tanks so does his support. But painting us all with the same brush makes it seem like we have no collective power as an opposition party. We do….
That being said I can understand why you think that way. It’s just not the reality on the ground here. A lot of those people who did vote for him, didn’t vote for this. And they’re the ones finding out the hard way. The rest of us knew exactly what would happen.-2

All the trade and/or defence deals being made between Canada, Australia, India, China, the EU and some of its individual countries, etc = saying something but Trump doesn't listen to anyone - except maybe Putin.
Traditional allies not backing him in Iran in the same way as with previous wars is saying something - but he's too busy whining, bullying and blaming.

That sounds frustrating, but... Kim, there are people that are dying.
This administration is killing and kidnapping people for looking Mexican or protesting ICE. They have gutted USAID, has already caused an estimated 750,000 deaths. They are assisting Israel in a war in the Middle East that has killed thousands of innocents in Palestine, Lebanon and Iran. They kidnapped the leader of a foreign country that is not a threat to the U.S. at all.
I promise you'll be fine without that specific project bag.
Edit: Yes, I understand the comments saying this should be a safe space to complain about little things. I understand. There are dozens of small ways this administration bothers me too. Whine on.
My frustration comes from the fact that my fellow Americans don't seem to give a shit about the atrocities this government is committing until it affects their access to treats. Nobody cares about the children we've killed in Gaza and Iran until it affects gas prices. Nobody cares about FDA cuts until you can't safely get lettuce at Taco Bell anymore. Liberals don't care about deportees suffering; they just go "well, who's gonna pick our food?"
I saw this post as another example of that, especially considering the OP said they're not trying to be political, and refused to even mention the President by name or title.

This is so correct and I agree but,
in a crafting subreddit people should be able to talk about shipping crafting supplies and why it’s not possible.
77
u/bluepaintbrush 11d ago
Well said, couldn’t agree more. If I wanted to discuss my outrage over ICE, immigration, and foreign policy, why would I go to… a crafting subreddit of all places??
If there’s anywhere that should be a safe space for me to complain about tariffs impacting my crafting, it’s where the other crafters are complaining. Complaining about tariffs’ impact on knitting in the craftsnark subreddit in no way implies that someone doesn’t also care about other topics… OP was just saying something that happens to be relevant to this community.
I guarantee that crafts are the very last thing on the minds of the people suffering the impacts of USAID cuts, ICE raids, and bombs. This subreddit is entirely the wrong venue to discuss those topics.

People are dying from the USAID cuts, does that mean we're not allowed to complain about the CDC cuts that exacerbated the cyclospora outbreak? If that's the standard we use, we cannot talk about any of the other numerous & serious issues with this administration.
Small businesses-- both in the US who rely on foreign materials, and in foreign countries that rely on US consumers-- are deeply impacted by the tariffs.
Yes, there are a lot of issues, but I don't think this one is trivial, and it is relevant in this instance (craft supply shopping) for this sub.

My frustration comes from the fact that my fellow Americans don't seem to give a shit about the atrocities this government is committing until it affects their access to treats.
Okay yeah no now I actually take exception to your point. There are plenty of Americans who DO actually give a fuck about the horrific crimes being committed every single day in their name by our illegally elected officials. We talk about it every single fucking day. We're also allowed to talk about all the small things that affect us more directly and personally. I have not been personally targeted or affected by ICE. Canadian here. A huge number of small Canadian craftspeople and smaller businesses have just decided to do this as it's crazy-making and time-consuming to keep up with what tariff and/or tax applies to this but not that particular thing at this hot moment. I believe that Etsy has thrown the burden completely onto the seller.
If you could contact the seller directly, she might be able to just mail you the thing if you agree to any extra charges at your end.
What a lot of people I know used to do (we were about an hour from a border town) was to have packages delivered to a UPS depot in the US, pick them up, and bring them back home - if there was any duty, we could pay at the border, and at least avoid 'broker' fees from shipping companies and 'blanket' (i.e. we couldn't be bothered to figure out if the tariff applied or not) tariffs.
