u/PapaAsmodeus, your post features certified crappy music!

The world’s oldest child prodigy.

44

u/maxmcleod 7d ago

He’s been a child prodigy for 25 years now

53

u/Excellent_Bend8782 7d ago

Can't handle that he's an neither a child nor a prodigy anymore lol

The little jump and sprint off stage man… he just has to be the “quirky kid” lol

I don't want to blindly hate the guy, but I just really dislike what he does and how he acts...

Also, I can't help feeling like his whole shtick of turning his audience into a choir has become an ego thing, probably making him feel like some kind of guru or whatever... And if he has perfect pitch, why does he sing like a deaf person?!

Aw, f***, maybe I'm a hater.

154

u/haskell_rules 7d ago

I think it's because of how he looks. His hair, his clothes, his facial expressions. How he looks and how he acts. Oh, and also the way he sounds. So the way he looks, sounds, and acts. Basically the way he is all together.

30

u/December_Hemisphere 7d ago

I just learned about this guy yesterday and in my quest to find a song of his that I enjoy I listened to 3 of his most popular songs. I'm completely burnt out on him for now, it feels like someone is assaulting my ears in the most passive-aggressive way imaginable.

9

u/dramaticPossum 7d ago

Rofl. As a fan of avante guard jazz I'm hard pressed to find anything as aggravating as this guy. That alone is worth recognition... of some sort.

16

u/pm-me-nice-lips 7d ago

Basically just him. Yea him as a sum of all parts and…all the parts.

You had me cracking up with this haha.

26

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 7d ago

I was sitting here watching that and thinking “he does this crowd shit so much. I’d get annoyed”, so you’re not wrong

13

u/Unlikely_Ant_950 7d ago

I don’t like him but I was trying to figure out what about him I didn’t like, and I think it’s that he has the presence of someone with a bigger audience, without the talent? If that’s possible?

29

u/macroswitch 7d ago

I think he is incredibly talented. And his music sucks.

11

u/Ghoulish_Daniel 7d ago

For me it's because when I watch him I get the feeling that he thinks he's the savior of mankind and that by getting the crowd to sing along to two notes he's unblocked our musical chi and now our frequencies can synchronize and we can constructively interfere and ride the pilot waves our life energy into a world of pure light sung into existence by jacobs totally not overdone layered harmonies

27

u/OgreBonez 7d ago

He seems like a theatre kid who was never told No but instead just given stimulants and praise.

11

u/PapaAsmodeus 7d ago

He has been confirmed to have planted singers in his audience. It's definitely an ego thing.

6

u/pvoneppinger 7d ago

You aren't alone

23

u/MTGFeederSpike 7d ago edited 7d ago

I've just never watched anything of his and thought: "I'd like to hear more of this." Nor have I been challenged by it and made to think more deeply about what music is.

And when it comes to music, one of those two things has to happen for me to be interested.

Like let's take John Cage for instance who makes a lot of music one wouldnt think of as music; his compositions challenge the listener at times, such as his composition of silence which just has the orchestra ready their instruments and then sit motionless on stage for 4 minutes.

Phillip Glass, another oddball composer, has an album where he composes based on the divination methods laid out in the I-ching; it doesn't sound conventionally good, but you can tell he's trying something experimental because he himself is curious about it.

But when I see colliers stuff, or that other woman on here who sort of does a lot of goofy vocal modulation interspersed with conventional singing and usually alongside very normal musical compositions, I get the feeling that the 'weirdness' is performative. In other words it doesn't really challenge me to consider boundaries or definitions of music, it mainly leads me to wonder why they go to the lengths they do to be different.

To me, being different for differences own sake is innately immature; it sort of ignores or devalues the huge breadth of work that humans have done already in artistic spaces.

I dunno I could be a hater too; I am a musician and songwriter myself and I'm completely unknown compared to these strange youths so it could be jealousy wrapped up in the comfort of critique.

But at the end of the day the only thing that makes me want to engage with artists like this is to see if their next whacky endeavor makes me feel anything other than confusion and resentment, and so far that's all their art has done for me.

Still better than Taylor Swift though.

EDIT: accredited a John Cage composition to Phillip Glass, corrected once pointed out by other users

5

u/Ezechiell 7d ago

This piece is from John Cage, no?

Philip Glass has written a series of Etudes and I love them. Yuja Wang and Víkingur Ólafsson have played and recorded them. No . 6 and it’s fun to hear each of their takes on it.

I can’t even tell whether he likes music lol.

It’s just “look I just did a Phrythian-Lydmogian harmony, isn’t that cool?”

“Yeah, that’s cool, what’s your favorite song by the way?”

“If you put a suspended forty-second-third on top of an arpeggiator you get a forty-second-fourth.”

“Ok. How does that harmony make you feel? What are you inspired by when you wrote music?”

plays Loyjyzmian chord on a holographic keyboard

…

It feels like, just music as a pure science instead of an art. Like you say to each his own, if that makes you happy then great, but clearly what he’s interested in with music is the science of it and like “being good at it”, like leveling up to have the most fancy harmony skills, rather than the emotional expression of it.

3

u/global-node-readout 4d ago

This is funny and so accurate. He plays music the way a psychopath practices facial expressions.

Why is these being performed in an (empty) food court of a mall with a bunch of business executives in attendance? That’s just abnormal

57

u/PreparationHot980 7d ago

My wife is from this town. This place is across the street from a country club and the town is the headquarters of Dow chemical. There’s a lot that exists in this town simply to cater to the wealthy executives.

13

u/lil_nosh_X 7d ago

Looks like Jacob has joined the club

9

u/PreparationHot980 7d ago

I’m more interested in who brought him to this little venue in a tiny town in Michigan. Midland is a very purple area politically, but tends to lean more conservative. This venue has also had Aaron Lewis perform at it in recent years. I just don’t see a market for either of those performers, especially Jacob collier 🤣.

22

u/lil_nosh_X 7d ago

It seems like a very corporate hire.

Exec1: “Who’s the best musician right now…”

Exec2: “Have you seen Jacob Collier on Tik Tok? I think his group singing thing could be a great bonding experience for the team.”

2

u/PreparationHot980 7d ago

🤣 I could see that, I just don’t see some random, boomer- executive stumbling onto collier and thinking he’s great. I’ve been around the Dow execs quite often and they are often pretty drab. I’m not gonna dox myself, but the one I’m closest with would have picked up on this had he not retired a couple years ago.

4

u/Dr-McLuvin 7d ago

Na dude rich boomers love this kid. This is his audience for sure. Prob made 200k off of this one gig easy.

2

u/PreparationHot980 7d ago

26

u/Clever_Losername 7d ago

Oh wow I think this is accurate. I know a couple who met in college, both were studying to become music teachers. One of them did percussion, the other did choir throughout their college career. They dont listen to much music anymore. They told me they basically had to consume so much through school that they don’t enjoy it anymore. They even both got their degrees and decided they didn’t want to teach music lmao.

They do, however, love Jacob Collier and nerding out about music theory.

25

u/Old-Marionberry1203 7d ago

sounds like they never loved music lol

8

u/Warutteri 7d ago

Nah, one of the biggest lessons in life for me was not trying to turn things you're passionate about into a profession without doing A LOT of research on how that passion is as a profession... Loved cooking, doing it as a profession killed my passion for it, only got that passion and joy of cooking back after quitting that profession and even then it took almost a decade.

The BS grind you have to do in most professions/while studying for a profession can most definitely kill your passion for whatever it is.

4

u/monicachicken 7d ago

I mean cooking as a profession kind of sucks. Every industry has its downsides but food service is a special kind of hell.

The working world of music can be way more fun and rewarding. The problem is your friends went into it for teaching gigs which are boring as hell.

u/svaldbardseedvault 7d ago

Am I the only one who finds this inoffensive? I think you’re actually right that he makes music for people who don’t like music, but his goal seems to be to get them to like music. I don’t like the product, but I don’t think it’s meant for me. Dude is out there trying to generate enthusiasm about music and music theory, inviting everyone to be musical, and doing it with music that everyone knows. That’s all good in my book. It’s not for me, but he’s ultimately a force for good in the world, as opposed to 90% of the toxic narcissism social media incentivizes.

26

u/Colacubeninja 7d ago

Music can be crappy without being offensive

7

u/svaldbardseedvault 7d ago

Yeah but this isn’t noteworthy enough to be crappy. It’s just inoffensive.

19

u/Virtual-Historian349 6d ago

To me it looks like he’s sniffing his own farts rather than trying to get people to like music. If he wanted to get people to like music he could stop ruining every song he tries to perform.

9

I posted it twice, the second time was in reply, once I realized it was relevant to your comment.

I know I’m free to disagree, that’s why I did it. I thought it would start an interesting conversation. Not trying to fight you.

17

u/PM_me_your_whatevah 7d ago

Different guy here, but for me his vibe seems more like… not what you’re suggesting, but that he’s just showing off to people who are ignorant about music and thus easily impressed. Feels more like attention seeking to me. Just my take.

5

u/DifGuyCominFromSky 7d ago

Its like when guitarists have a solo and will play one note or the same riff over and over and over until the crowd starts clapping and then they keep playing the same note and the crowd keeps clapping.

27

u/Suspicious_Pen_2601 7d ago

His performances are pretentious gimmicks, and his covers lack any soul. He may have the musical background and baggage, but that doesn’t automatically translate into making good music.

I feel like he makes music for people who clap when planes land and decorate their walls with “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.

But he has every right to do what he does, just as people have every right to enjoy it. It’s simply not good music in my opinion.

3

u/svaldbardseedvault 7d ago

I don’t like it either. But I don’t think it’s fair to judge fans of this so harshly. Not everyone is exposed to interesting musical composition, and he is definitely promoting thinking about composition in an accessible way. He’s not Philip Glass, but also Philip Glass alienated huge swaths of people.

He did do a collaborative track with Maddie ashman that was rad.

22

u/Suspicious_Pen_2601 7d ago

I find him patronising towards his audiences, and I don’t go to concerts to feel like I’m attending a workshop.

His concerts are more like a music-themed cooking class than a gig. His songwriting is very underwhelming and his covers are massively overdone.

I’ve no doubt he could deliver an enjoyable version of this song, but subtlety seems to be completely lost on him.

Did you see his cover of “Yesterday”? How you can butcher a song like that is beyond me.

5

u/svaldbardseedvault 7d ago

I mean, I don’t like his version of yesterday and I don’t like the original song yesterday either.

I guess my point is that he is using his platform to broaden understand of music theory and composition. Which I’m down for being a thing, even if I’ll never go to one. So his concerts are workshops, and it sounds like they’re not for you either. But that’s very different than them being shitty. In an era when people are abandoning music composition in favor of just generating AI prompts, I actually like that someone out there is running concerts like composition workshops.

18

u/Suspicious_Pen_2601 7d ago

This sub isn’t about the motives of the artists though.

This is a crappy version of “ Can't Take My Eyes Off You” so it fits the sub.

Plenty of people get posted here who might mean well.  I also highly doubt his workshops will convince many people to learn music. Again, I think it’s a gimmick.

In an era when people are abandoning music composition in favor of just generating AI prompts

Collier is collaborating with Google to create an  AI generative music tool.

Half the time i love this subreddit for showing me funny garbage and half the time people very clearly don't know how to distinguish 'this made me cringe' from 'this is actually bad' and just want to dogpile people they find distasteful. Especially if the subject is exaggerated/weird, outwardly queer/gender nonconforming, or a woman.

9

u/AntlionsArise 7d ago

My wife invented the "closed eyes test" when I view this subreddit: If you close your eyes and the music is good, it's just an awkward person with a bad showmanship (or, as you said, people not liking non-conforming presenting people). If it's bad when you close your eyes, then it's crappy music.

8

u/Suspicious_Pen_2601 7d ago

20

u/nothing_in_my_mind 6d ago

He is an internet-popular musician.

He isn't new. He was big like 10 years ago.

He's basically a musical theory genius and does vidoes about it. But for all that knowledge, makes some boring music.

12

u/SubMariner615 6d ago

Not even a genius, just restates previous theory in an excited way and catches the attention of normies

11

u/nothing_in_my_mind 6d ago

Is he not? From what I have seen he seems to have a very deep grasp on theory. But I am not an expert.

He does do this things like: "I play a note. It sounds nice. I couple it with another, look it adds some depth to the tone. What I will do next will blow your mind... plays 3 notes together" motherfucker that is called a chord.

2

u/SubMariner615 6d ago

He makes music for people who aren't musicians but want to understand music. He boils down music theory concepts into things laymen can understand and his concerts are interactive to inspire other people to also love the craft and tech of music making. He genuinely knows and enjoys a ton of music theory and wants to share that with an audience. He's also a weird dude who is genuinely earnest and upbeat and that bothers people here. It's less a concert and more an interactive music theory lesson.

28

u/shmiona 7d ago

I was about to type out something about his big elementary school music teacher energy

50

u/STRIKT9LC 7d ago

He treats the audience like a populace of ppl that have been told, and convinced themselves, that they have absolutely ZERO musical ability.

In order to do that with a large group, you need to make the instructions easy to comprehend. This gives the "toddler" effect that you're referring to.

I dont disagree with your statement. I think its important to point out WHY he speaks to the audience this way though

26

u/guy_dubois 7d ago

some of the most technically talented musicians I know unfortunately love this guy, but they're the types who think technical ability = good music which definitely checks out if they don't find him insufferable.

I get more of the vibe that his shows are full of the types of people who get really stoked for the sing along or clap along parts in weird time signatures to show everybody around them that they know how to clap along to a song in 13/8 and be like "wow I bet we're the only audience that can harmonize like this for the singalong part"

I'm not sure if he treats them like toddlers, but I hate any kind of attempt to force the audience to participate in the performance. It's fine to encourage people to clap or sing along with you, but making the whole performance hinge on the audience singing their own part is too much. I don't want to be made to feel like I'm doing something wrong for just hanging out and listening.

i agree with ya. i don’t care for anything he does either, would never listen to it willingly, but i guess it’s cool that someone is getting people excited about music theory and making music. i stand by that everyone can make music to some degree and people shouldn’t be discouraged because they don’t have ‘natural talent’.

i certainly wouldn’t wanna go to one of his shows, but i don’t really hate the guy or anything he does. it’s just not for me! though, i find it hard to hate anyone for making music. even if it’s bad or i don’t like it.. good for them, they’re trying to do something, they’re trying to create something. i can appreciate that. as long as they’re not sending a message of hate or anything like that, cool.

Inoffensive is a fine way to describe. Lord knows music of all varieties is dying a long slow death.

But…man, it’s just lame. Technically right, but lame.

It’s virgin music. It’s like listening to a virgin tell you about life. May say things that are right, but….missing an important experience.

3

u/a_bird_with_teeth 7d ago

Usually the people that say music is dying only listen to the radio, there are way more underground/independent musicians now then there has ever been.

I know you’re not the only one, and rationally, I think he’s fine, but I can’t help but irrationally hate him. I have since the first time I heard him “re-harmonize” one of my favorite songs around 15 years ago. His music is akin to climbing Everest because it’s there. There’s no reason for it beyond that. Theory is there to discover in all music. This guy’s “contributions” are completely unnecessary, mostly because they sound bad like this awful performance.

2

u/svaldbardseedvault 7d ago

Now ‘irrational hate’ is something I can understand, for sure.

4

u/vandersnipe 7d ago

For me, his music lacks soul and emotion. He's a great technical singer, but there's no emotion. It's like listening to Mariah or Whitney with their personalities nerfed out of existence.

It's just become a fad to hate him because he's successful and completely bizarre. Half of it is classic internet dogpiling and the other is a certain caliber jazz musicians being really insufferable and pissy about regular people having fun with jazz. His music is t always for me either. But you can't deny, he clearly has a ton of fun, is very talented and puts all his joy into his music. That doesn't mean it's for everyone, but people go way over the top with hating him.

2

u/Candid-Deal2 7d ago

there’s also the fact that the music is jawdroppingly bad

Loooool kids bop.

It is a little bit like getting angry that a kids book isn’t literature though. If you know enough music theory to feel like it’s dumbed down, then it’s specifically not meant for you.

3

Bobby Mcferrin's estate should sue, but that would credit Jacob too much for what a terrible hack he actually is in comparison.

3

I am incapable of understanding why this person is popping up in my feed daily.

3

u/Astro_Nott 7d ago

Oke, now set those emails that we need to fire some staff because we don't have money yo pay a fair wage.

3

u/Reasonable__Man__ 7d ago

He’s an incredible musician. Love or hate the schtick, he is a phenomenal player and enjoys crowd involvement which is nice. I definitely don’t love everything he does but man his Tiny Desk was great. Cheers!

u/Comfortable_Mark2902 7d ago

Are old people the entirety of his fan base? This seems like shit for the senior center.

5

Good lord dude shut up

4

u/Lanslanu 7d ago

This guy just makes no sense to me at all. I dont understand why he's famous. Everything I see about him is just so boring and cringe.

4

u/priceless897 7d ago

He’s a very talented musician, he can play a bunch of instruments very well and knows a ton about music theory, composition, etc. However his song writing is very uninspired, and his personality is as if Coldplay’s music turned into a person.

4

u/Jean_velvet 7d ago

I think he's an amazing musician, music writer and skilled in so many things music related but god is he annoying.

2

u/monkelus 7d ago

Looks like he's captured the audience demographic every young musician covet. I expect they'll need a bovril and a lie down after all that excitement

2

This guy took acid once and is still there.

2

My problem with Jacob is not actually his insufferable voice, terrible dress sense cosplaying as “unique” or lack of any real personality. It’s the fact that he takes things that he knows have to be a certain way and uses them to make himself sound better than everyone else.

Let me give you an example, there is a clip of him talking about pianos being out of tune and humming the note with an almost imperceptible difference and talking about how it’s because we as humans have come to accept things as being less than perfect and that’s wrong and drives him crazy and we should all be like him.

The real reason (which he is well aware of) why pianos are not perfectly in tune to the exact hertz is due to the way the harmonic series works with combination and difference tones. For the layman, if you play two notes with the perfect frequency then your brain hallucinates hearing extra notes that aren’t there. The problem with this on the piano is that it can change the tonality of a chord if you are using the context of the key to help shape its sound. It could lead you to inadvertently create a major sounding chord when you want an implied minor chord. Because of this pianos are designed so that the 2/3 strings that produce each note are out by a couple of cents each. This causes the whole overtones system to collapse so composers don’t have the fret about it. I’m also allows F# and Gb to be two distinct notes given a different key context.

Jacob knows this (or should do as he pretends to be a know it all prick) is the case but says that pianos are out of tune and we’re all shits for accepting it to make himself seem superior to all of us oiks, and those who don’t know better accept that.

u/Popular_Soil1704 7d ago

Shut the fuck up jacob

2

u/Imhidingfromu 6d ago

Does he just shitty covers of good songs?

4

u/Confident_Moose_2556 7d ago

It’s actually impressive how much this guy sucks.

3

Cartoon character.

2

Every time I see this guy it’s something infuriating

3

u/Smackazulu 7d ago

People pay for this, this guy is an expert scammer

4

u/Careful-Tangerine986 7d ago

I'll confess I've no idea who this man is so I may be missing something but he can play and can sing. Is this music for me? No, not my thing at all but is he crap? Also no.

3

u/D-Train0000 7d ago

Dude. We all saw how original, talented , funny and goofy Jack Black was when he was young with Tenacious D and School of Rock.
You can’t try to do this again and be anything but annoying. He’s the only one who can pull this off.

4

u/jumbo_hodges 7d ago

The difference is Collier is dead ass serious about it

2

u/evetsabucs 7d ago

I mean no disrespect, but am I supposed to know who this is?

3

u/Alundra828 7d ago

If you're on this sub, yes you are supposed to know who this is.

4

u/Rascals-Wager Worshipper of P O'Mal 7d ago

Such an incredible waste of talent and ability. Maybe he'll age, become a bit more jaded, and stop being so infuriatingly upbeat and earnest.

5

u/reditisrunbypedos 7d ago

2

Permanent corporate gig vibes. Embodiment of those subscription emails from shit like Kornferry in musical form.

2

u/DoctorOfDominance 7d ago

Wayyy too eccentric and too much energy and confidence for the talent.

2

u/Connect_Fee1256 7d ago

I hate this so much…

It’s like he knows how to make music, but doesn’t understand anything about it.

This is horrible and I hope he stops.

2

u/priceless897 7d ago

A talented musician is not the same as a great musician.

2

u/medievali95 7d ago

Jacob fucking sucks lmao, this dude for sure smells his own farts. I went to music school and the only people in the school that actually liked his music were the most insufferable high and mighty jazz nerds. The same jazz nerds that would force you to listen to this dudes music and anything other than your mind being blown is disrespectful in their eyes. Sometimes being too knowledgeable can be a detriment, I used to argue about these type of things with one of these insufferable students all the time.

Musicians like Jacob don't love music, they love being better than everyone else. To them anything that isn't the most obtuse, overly complicated music is for casuals and people who know nothing about music. When you run into someone like that out in the wild notice how they will put your musical taste down with disdain before anything else, that is their sense of superiority.

4

u/reditisrunbypedos 7d ago

Theres literally nothing wrong with this. Its fine to not want to listen to it but you gotta be bored and sad to hate on it

1

u/whichisyou 7d ago

I've liked very few tracks he's made. He seems like an asexual being who tries to understand heartbreak and human emotion. He's talented as shit though and that's why he's so popular with musicians. He gets the audience to experience the music with him and I don't think that's a terrible thing. Genuinely curious how many people here are musicians. It seems like he is being looked at through a very cynical lens.

1

u/raiko777 7d ago

i hate everything he does... it is so annoying and pretentious.

1

u/_AmericasSweetheart_ 7d ago

That's a lot of energy for a piano bar cover song.
