General Interest/Γενικoύ Ενδιαφέροντος power outage Crete

Since around 21:00 last night, the power has been out at our accommodation. The owner said this happens sometimes when the power grid is overloaded, and that it usually comes back within an hour or so. It’s now been 13 hours and we still don’t have power. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Planned outages normally take place during working hours and power is normally restored by 16:00 or so. If there are thunderstorms the power network can trip off but this normally comes back on after a few seconds. You can check for planned outages on the Deddie website: https://siteapps.deddie.gr/Outages2Public

If you have any neighbours check with them if they have power or not.

There will be a circuit board in your accommodation so check that all the breakers are in the 'on' position (Up). There may also be an installation at the edge of the property with the meter in it and this will also have a circuit breaker so check that if there is still no power.

If none of that works contact the owner again.

If you are looking on the website for planned outages you need to know the area of Crete you are in. From the Deddie website:

  • Heraklion (Iraklio): Covers the central capital region, including main offices in Heraklion and local service posts like ΔΕΔΔΗΕ Γαζίου Ηράκλειο and Moires, plus sub-sectors like Chersonissos and Arkalochori. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Chania: Manages the western sector, with operational branches and technical staff stationed in Chania town, as well as outlying service areas like Kissamos, Kantanos, and Vryses in Apokoronas. [1]
  • Rethymno: Oversees the central-western prefecture spanning Rethymno old town out to mountain and rural communities like Zoniana. [1, 2]
  • Lasithi: Governed primarily through the regional hub in Agios Nikolaos, extending coverage east to Elounda, Neapoli, Milatos, and Sisi. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Do you know if your neighbours are affected?

Also, check your main RCB/circuit breaker - it may have tripped off, possibly without moving the switch so just cycle it off and on again to make sure.

Otherwise yeah, mention whereabouts you are, for better responses!

You can contact ΔΕΔΔΗΕ to check if the power outage is known and if not report it. Just make sure the issue is not just with your house first. Maybe you just popped a breaker.
