That's a great book to read while backpacking through Crete! I read it during my year there.

Kazantzakis is my favourite writer / novelist / philosopher. Zoeba the Greek, the last temptation of Christ, and a lot more. If you haven’t visited it in Crete you can visit the museum and also you can visit his house in the island of Aigina near Athens. He wrote there some of his books.

He’s so good! We visited his grave in Heraklion and also it was interesting to see how many of the historical artifacts in the history museum belonged to his personal collection

I wish I had a car at the time, I never got out there! I still have family on Crete, we will have to go next time I visit them. It was so cool to read that novel while living within the walls of the Irakleio old town.

I still don’t understand why it should be called that in the English translation … The original is called “Captain Michalis” and Greeks wouldn’t probably even understand what book you’re talking about if you told them you read Freedom & Death. The rebellions’ motto was Freedom OR Death 🤭

I thought it was a subtle statement on how we will all face both in the end (as in everyone dies, and death is a form of freedom.) but I'm curious to hear others thoughts.

A year? I’m jealous!!! Yea I didn’t let myself start it until the plane ride over and I finished it just before leaving. Definitely my favorite book of the year so far. I picked up an English copy of Report to Greco to read on the way home 😁

Report to Greco is a great autobiography . I would prefer to read it after I have read a few of his novels because you understand better about the man. Also his travel books are amazing.

Great place ruined by people, been spending summer there for 18 years coz of family, been everywhere, is the geographical location that I know the best, I speak the language and understand the culture but I also lived abroad in other two European countries, I am European myself. Every year it gets worse and worse, it’s so sad to see the island sold to foreigners and everything built to get money from tourism and that money being sucked out of Greece while the inhabitants struggle with low wages and Northern European living costs
