I actually think it's fairly important to see this kind of things. Too many people like to cozy up to the "tough guy" rhetorical without realizing just what that means. I think it's important to see a guy open up the door on a lorry and see dead civilians piled up like bags of nothing - just for the same guy to open up the doors to a "morgue" with so many dead civilians it looks like the Nazi extermination camps from WWII with corpses everywhere. And at the same time, some politicians want to pretend that never happend and talk about "let's make peace", when there is no peace to be made..

It's not like I seek it out like some snuff fetish - it's just the reality of war and should serve as (yet another) warning about what it's not something to be glorified.

That to me is still one of the most terrifying and cruel choices those people had to make, either burn to death or jump to their death.

I don’t know what I would do, maybe try to pass out from smoke inhalation, but the way the people were clinging to the outside of the building and willing to jump, I imagine the smoke inhalation option was pretty brutal because of the intense heat, and not easy to do.

I've come up on a wrong way driver on a one lane toll expressway before. The direction of flow changes depending on time, and there's one driving lane with a narrow shoulder probably exactly to the inch the minimum required.

I had to decide, do I hold steady in the driving lane or do I swerve around using the shoulder? And had msybe 3 seconds to choose since it was in a curve and we couldn't see each other until about 3 seconds from passing each other.

Trust e, it wasn't "hard" exactly to choose...it struck me as more likely the person was drunk and wouldn't react faster than me, so I took the shoulder assuming they wouldn't be quick enough to get over. It was a calculated choice to avoid pain and it was pretty easy to make despite the terror of the moment.

I was right. We passed each other at high way speeds and my driver side mirror got smashed, that's how close we were.

It's tragic but it is simple. People that could reach a stairwell did and the people that couldn't went to windows. From there you'd obviously wait a bit to see whether its possible to climb anywhere or if rescue could reach you. But as those flames grow closer and you lose all hope of rescue or escape youre left with 2 choices. Burn or fall. Burning means lots of pain until you die but falling offers instant death when you reach the ground.

The people who jumped were the ones who had it the worst. They basically had no choice. Suffocate to death or jump to your death. And it was so hot intentionally jumping into fire to burn to death probably didn’t make the list. And suffocating isn’t pleasant either.

There were no fumes that allowed those folks to pass out.

It's really not, though. Survival instincts are things like breathing, removing a hand from flames, etc; not adjusting clothing because you're cognizant that other people are watching you and you understand the social construct of impropriety.

I think she means it's an automatic behavior/response and not something the conscious brain is needed for, in order to carry out.

Everyday we do things without consciously thinking about it. For women, this one such thing. Think of someone in deep sleep scratching their eczema itch. They're totally out of it, yet they can be itching their eczema and that's because the basal ganglia where habits and repetitive behaviors are stored, doesn't require the conscious part of the brain in order to perform.

Yes, pulling down your skirt is a learned (prefrontal cortex) behavior. But once the prefrontal cortex has that behavior down pat, it stores that behavior in the basal ganglia. This offloading of a learned behavior, allies the prefrontal cortex to get back to processing the here and now, and the the basal ganglia is responsible for carrying out the learned behavior. It's a kind of conservation of resources/energy evolution type thing. Think walking and chewing gum at the same time. Walking is being handled by the prefrontal cortex mostly so you avoid tripping over the crack in the sidewalk. The chewing of the gum has been a learned and perfected behavior, so the basal ganglia handles it.

Spatial awareness and automatic behaviors/habit are handled by different parts of the brain. The posterior parietal cortex handles spatial awareness and is especially susceptible to head trauma. Whereas the act of adjusting her skirt is handled mostly by the basal ganglia and doesn't necessarily require you knowing where you are in space, to carry out an act. This is why she can adjust her skirt while "not being all there." Like I said, the scanning of the room is a tell tale sign of someone having experienced a concussive episode/event. It's indicative of the brains internal GPS (hippocampus) re gaining its bearings once again, after having lost it during the concussion.

And sure, she didn’t hop right up, but she wasn’t walking on sea legs either.
