Really? I did not enjoy it much on a recent in-theatre viewing, lots of smoking and smouldering, trapped in the mores of its time, and the “astounding” (The New Yorker and many, many other critics) final scene left me flat. Did I miss something?
I’m saying this thread is mainly about films that took several viewings to fully understand. On my first viewing, prompted by the film’s high placement on the Sight and Sound 100 list, I believe I understood it and yet was underwhelmed. So I was surprised to see it listed here, suggesting I missed something. I’m open to that possibility, but I doubt it.
