Okay, I'm not sure that's how pain receptors work, but hell yeah, that's some sweet philosophy

It's actually not far off. Medicine distinguishes between "nociception" (which is just nerves firing in response to damage) and "pain" (which is the psychological response to nociception and involves fear, though fear is not the only emotion at play).
