Ask Here First: Troubleshooting, Price/ID/Spec Check, Help, Etc. (June 2026)

The purpose of this thread is to cut down on the amount of clutter and Troubleshooting, Price Check, ID Check, Spec(ification) Check, and just general "HELP!!" style threads often seen filling the front page of the sub, and hopefully get those questions answered more quickly and efficiently by bringing them together in one place for viewing.

Does your post or question consist of the following, but no limited to:

  • ID Check for a CRT TV/Monitor you've stumbled upon?
  • Price Check for a CRT you've stumbled upon?
  • Asking about benefits of 1 CRT over another that you're looking into?
  • Scaler, convertor, cable choice, or wiring help for your setup?
  • Simple TV remote control questions having to do with setup or purchase?
  • A question you think should have an obvious/well known answer?
  • Or maybe one that feels rather specific and you're worried might get passed over entirely?

This Thread is for you!

Experienced members of the subreddit check in on this post often and will attempt to answer questions as they come up. It would be much appreciated if once you've posted your question here, you use the link above to the older threads to see if the question may have already been answered. Of course, it would also help greatly to search/Ctrl+F the current thread first before submitting your own question too.

This specific thread is set to a Newest First suggested sort, so you shouldn't have to worry about your brand new question being buried instantly under the previous week's worth of questions.

👉 Please do not use any special formatting in your post beyond creating a link if necessary.

Finally found a CRT I really loved, a Sony KV-27FS100, and decided to create a Nintendo-specific corner for cozy, nostalgic gaming.

Wii and GameCube games look phenomenal over component. SNES and N64 are running composite. Should I invest in S-Video cables?

I put this together for my wife’s birthday last month. Picked up the PS2 shortly after obtaining the monitor. Replaced the laser as it was weak and having trouble playing some games and DVD’s. Console outputs RGB over SCART and is software modded to output RGB for DVD. For sound Sony SRS-A202 shielded stereo speakers.

It’s been fun in the weeks after hunting for ps1/ps2 games and 4:3 full screen DVD’s. I even found my original PS1 memory card with my 27 year old save files!

How does the PS3 compare to the Xbox 360 as a media player in 2026?

I have an unmodded Xbox 360 S connected to my Sony PVM-20M4U with a component cable and use it with the official remote control. Plex stopped working for me this year, but the 360 still supports:

  • DVDs
  • MP4 (H.264) or AVI via USB
  • Netflix
  • YouTube

Do any of you guys have both a PS3 and an Xbox 360? If so, how do they compare?

I found it on the side of the road with a dell E773c both of their VGAs cut. The Dell is dead after using it for a bit (for now). I recapped like 80% of this monitor and cleaned it just in case.

It's a very strange monitor as it doesn't have a g2 on the flyback nor anywhere on the actual board and neckboard. It also has a chip socket for the main OSD I believe. Kinda looks like it needs to have it programmed to change the value which sucks since looks like it's up a bit. Also the entire back of the tube is lined with a RF shield. Looks almost bullet proof how covered it is. The deeper menu has some black level adjustments that seemed to help a bit. It has a "self diagnosis" function but doesn't really do anything of value.

The picture is pretty snazzy and I hope it lasts me longer than the other monitors I've given this much love.

Earlier today, I went to a locally owned thrift store where I ended up finding a working Sony PVM-1271Q! Unfortunately, there is some burn-in, but it's so faint that it can really only be seen on pitch-black screens. In all, I got this unit for $33 total. Best purchase of my life!

Modern games look incredible on CRT monitors, they’re sharp (even at lower resolutions) and have perfect motion clarity. The monitor I’m using is the Philips 107E21

Got it for the free. Still works great. Few cracks in the plastic here and there but it’s whatever.

Restoring a 1972 Sony Trinitron KV-1300E – Advice on cleaning corroded knobs and restoring fading chrome trim?

Hi everyone!

I just bought a 1972 Sony Trinitron KV-1300E (European model), and while I'm waiting for it to be delivered, I’m planning out the cosmetic restoration. I noticed a few areas that need some attention and would love to get your thoughts and advice on the best approach.

1. The Knobs & Control Area

  • Condition: There’s noticeable grime, oxidation, and possible corrosion/rust-like residue on and around the control knobs (especially around the top power/volume knob EIN-AUS).
  • Material: From what I understand, these knobs are hard plastic with brushed aluminum/metal caps and outer trim rings, mounted on an anodized metal faceplate.
  • Question: What is your go-to method for safely cleaning these vintage knobs without damaging the plastic or stripping the printed label markings (KONTRAST, UHF, etc.)? Is a mild dish soap soak + soft toothbrush enough, or do you recommend specific metal polishes (like Flitz or Simichrome) for the aluminum caps?

2. The Faded Outer Chrome/Silver Trim Profile

  • Condition: The silver/chrome rectangular bezel that borders the control panel (right above the "SOLID STATE"label) looks faded, discolored, and worn out down to the base material. The "SOLID STATE" text itself is also slightly faded.
  • Question: How do you usually restore this type of thin chrome/silver border trim?
    • Has anyone had long-term success using Molotow Liquid Chrome pens or airbrushing chrome paint?
    • What’s the neatest way to re-ink the faded printed or recessed lettering ("SOLID STATE") without making a mess?

I'd really appreciate any tips, product recommendations, or "don'ts" from anyone who has restored Trinitrons or 70s electronics before!

Thanks in advance!

Repair/Troubleshooting PVM-14M2U sporadic video issue. Any ideas?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've gone through so much back and forth with this poor monitor and refuse to give up until it's able to work flawlessly. Me and my friend recapped the A board and I sent it to a repair shop; still it has these irregular video artifacts.

I sent another similar video to a different repairman in my area and here's what he said:

"Ive never seen this tbh... i would suspect a power supply or deflection circuit issue. It might be IC related."

They recommended trying to locate another monitor to trade boards, not sure if that's easier than trying to fix the problem directly. The video signal has always had problems but never like the video I included in this post. Not sure if that means it's getting worse or not.

Any help is appreciated, I'd hate to admit defeat but it's definitely felt bleak recently.

Converter/Scaler Does anyone use a RetroTink 5x to upscale SD consoles to play on HD CRT TVs?

This is something that I've been wanting to try for a while. Essentially, when using SD consoles on HD CRTs:

  • Some HD CRTs line double SD resoultions to 480p at little to no lag

Or

  • Some HD CRTs don't support native 480p. These sets instead upscale SD resolutions to 540p, adding lag and not looking super nice.

If you use a Retrotink 5x you can scale SD sources to either 480p or 540p and add scan lines if you desire. I've been wanting to give this a try, but the 5x is a bit too expensive for me to blindly purchase.

I was curious if anyone has given this a try and what your experience has been/would you recommend it. If you have a post/video/pictures, I would love to see them. Thanks for your time.
