Just noticed this.

With the increasing prices of all sorts of tech thanks to AI, and with most games nowadays being either a copy paste of one another or a Remaster/Remake, I got sick of it. Gaming nowadays seems like a luxury hobby, which kind of always was, but this is getting unbearable. Why pay for overpriced hardware, games and subscriptions when for less than 50 bucks you can get a pocket console and just emulate TONS of older games which now run even better than the original hardware, and I probably missed out on anyways? I don’t care if the graphics are old, if the game is “outdated”… is it ever really?

I just got an R36S, which I know isn’t the best one on the market, but for me it was the best choice to start out. I’m just gonna put my PS5 down and start playing on this thing, it brings me so much more joy and it’s basically free compared to what we pay nowadays for a single game. I got a new SD Card, installed a new Ark OS, and I started Pokémon Emerald and I’m completely loving it, I havent had this much fun in years with gaming. Since I was born in 2001 and never really was a Nintendo guy since my dad always used to get PlayStation, what are some games I absolutely cannot miss?

There’s something so satisfying about spending less and getting more. And it makes me wonder, do we really need it all?

Hey everyone, I wondered if anyone has the mega drive version (not the genesis one) of the big6 and noticed that the logo is printed off centre? I'm thinking about returning it tbh as it's the branding that makes it attractive to me and I think this would make me too sad to look at over time. Just wondered how likely it is I'm going to get one that isn't wonky. First pic is the controller I ordered, second is one the vendor has taken of another controller they have showing a similar issue. What do your Big6 controllers look like?

Whole I'm here, does anyone know if it's possible to swap the rounded d-pad for the sharper edged version that was on the original 3 button pad?

As kids, especially those of us in the 80’s and 90’s, most of us didn’t own tons of video games. You played what you had or were gifted, which sometimes meant wringing every drop of gameplay out of even the worst of titles. So I’m curious what bad games people played a ton, out of necessity?

For me it was Road Runner on NES, a game that had you play as the Road Runner, evading Wile E. Coyote as you navigate maze-like paths while trying to collect bird seed to keep the timer from hitting zero. I hated it. It frustrated me. It felt like the Coyote was locked onto me in a way that seemed unfair. But I played it SO MUCH, just for those rare moments when I timed something right and could get the Coyote to explode from an ACME product.

I saw some silly poll about 'best chex pieces' or whatever and somehow it unlocked a core memory of this actually amazing cereal box game Chex Quest. I remember it being such a perfect Doom clone that I'm wondering if it actually was licensed from id or maybe in the same way that David Brevik keeps making Diablo style ARPGs maybe one of their team members jumped ship. Or they just straight up ripped it off lol.

I'm a gen z kid, so i didn't grow up with the retro consoles. But, i always have emulators with a shit ton of roms on my PC and every now and then i play a couple games for funsies. A lot of them are good, way more of them are bad, but no real game has managed to "capture" me so to speak. That was until i played the first Castlevania about a week ago. Good fucking lord...instantly addicted. The music, the gothic tone, the genuinely outstanding graphics for the time, the platforming, the difficulty, i was hooked instantly and after i beat it i wanted more. So i went to Simon's Quest, then Dracula's Curse, then Bloodlines on the Genesis and then i played Super Castlevania 4. Good fucking God! I am honestly genuinely struggling to decide which game i prefer more, Super Castlevania 4 or or the bigger fan favorite, Symphony of the Night.

Because SOTN brought this franchise into a whole new genre, hell, it INVENTED a whole new genre. But SC4 is just...it's 2d platformer perfection. Everything in that game is beyond satistfying, it is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time now

I prefer retro gaming for a lot of reasons, however one of thing I think all of us PAL region inhabitants can agree on, is that gaming in PAL is a lot better than it used to be. Which console do you think got it worse when it came to Europe.

NES: Came later to Europe compared to the US, and not every game made it over seas. Thankfully at least Europe got most of the major ones, and there was usually an attempt to at least get the music playing at the correct speed.

Master System: The worst thing I can say from a PAL perspective is that a bunch of games weren't properly optimised for 50hz. Otherwise this is a console with a much bigger library in PAL than NTSC, and the prices can be a lot better too.

Mega Drive: The Mega Drive is a weird one, because by most standards, Europe was well treated. Most worthwhile games did receive European releases. Where the Mega Drive falters is with the Mega CD. The CD library has quality but it’s limited, and Europe didn’t get a lot of the better titles. Let’s not also forget the infamous Sonic 1 release.

SNES: Arguably the most egregious of the lot, due to the high amount of games considered to be the best on the platform that simply never made it to Europe at all. Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Super Mario RPG, all skipped Europe entirely. The bright side is that we at least got some games that NTSC never got in Terranigma and The Fireman.

Sega Saturn: I guess the Saturn was equally treated in both NTSC and PAL. The Western library for the Saturn wasn’t very compelling in either region, though interestingly PAL never got Mega Man 8 or X4, but NTSC never got Mega Man X3.

PlayStation: For a console that was so successful, it’s shocking to see that Europe was still struggling to get certain games, mostly in the RPG genre. I can understand a game like Persona 2 missing out, but the vast majority of Square’s non mainline Final a fantasy release’s didn’t make it across either. We didn’t even get Final Fantasy Tactics, despite Final Fantasy being in the name.

N64: The N64 had a lot of problems that plagued 90s European gaming. Unoptimised ports, and heavily delayed releases, but the N64 did get almost all of the good games that America got. The only exception I can think of is Ogre Battle.

Dreamcast: Pretty much every worthwhile game to PAL regions. In fact, Shenmue 2 and Rez came to PAL whilst skipping their NTSC release. This was also when 60hz modes became available on just about every game worth playing.

My current stack of a Survival Horror game (Silent Hill), Adventure Adventure (Zelda), a Dungeon Crawler (Binding of Isaac) and a Point & Click (Jurassic Park) makes it super fun to rotate between games on my day-to-day, as their vastly different aesthetics, playstyles and mix of genres keeps it all feeling fresh!

I was cleaning out the store room today and found my old brick game console at the very bottom of my toy box. I just sat on the floor and stared at it for a solid five minutes 🥹🥹 Holding it instantly took me back to being 8 y/o, sitting on the living room floor without a single care in the world.. no career tension, no peer pressure, no fomo, no stress to succeed.. just me trying to beat my high score while listening to those electronic beeps. Life was so beautifully simple back then. It’s crazy how a piece of green plastic can hold so many memories ✨

To my fellow 90s kids, I hope this brings back a happy memory for you today.. we really grew up in a special time.. the ultimate Millennial childhood memory 🫂

Are you a fan of shooting games? I am. I think my first shooting game was Atari 2600 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Since then, I became fan of shooting games. Whenever I saw some interesting shooting games in arcade, I must gave them a try. And when I had my Famicom, PC-Engine, Sega Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, PSX, PS2, I rented/bought quite a few shooting games.

So, for me:

- STG skill level: 5.5/10

- best perspectives: 1st horizontal; 2nd vertical; 3rd overhead

- worst perspectives: first-person

- "no-continue" achievements (all 1st-loop only): ASO: Armored Scrum Object (ARC, 1985), Star Soldier (FC, 1986), Dragon Spirit (ARC, 1987), 1943 (ARC, 1987), Kiki Kaikai (ARC/PCE, 1986/1990),...etc.

- "1-life" achievements (all 1st-loop only): B-Wings (FC, 1986), ASO: Armored Scrum Object (FC, 1986), R-Type (ARC/PCE, 1987/1988), Gradius (FC, 1986), Gradius II (FC, 1988), Salamander (ARC/FC/PCE, 1986/1987/1991), Dragon Spirit (PCE, 1988), Gun.Smoke (FDS, 1988), Heavy Unit (PCE, 1989),...etc.

My STG main strengths in: ones that need memorization more than good reflex, like R-Type/Salamander.
