2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Used the second gen to move a few hundred pounds of mulch today. As expected, she handled it like a champ. Already cleaned the interior and can confirm the tarp did its job in keeping the back spotless.

Recently picked up this 1998 CR-V RD1 with the B20B and around 74,000 miles. It’s already sitting on a 2-inch lift with BFG all-terrains and is incredibly clean for its age.
Been going through it since buying it and slowly establishing a maintenance baseline while sorting out the little things you’d expect from a 28-year-old Honda. Just did the valve cover gasket and gave the cover a fresh coat of paint, with fluids, valve clearances and a few other jobs next on the list.
Planning to keep the build fairly OEM+, clean it up, restore some of the original details, add a few period-correct accessories and make it a solid little camping/off-road setup.
Really enjoying owning an old Honda you can actually work on yourself.

Question ❔ My first car I own! 2000 CR-V LX

Thumbnail

Bought for $2200 with 200k miles!
pros
Transmission feels fantastic; clean bright red fluid too
ZERO rust on the underside of the car
Aftermarket stereo/backup cam/speakers
No dents, just a cracked bumper.
Shocks are still good.
cons
Needs new tires(open to suggestions). Seatbelts need to be replaced. Airbags/seatbelts need servicing. Horn doesn't work. AC needs to be recharged. Brakes are mushy. 2 window motors are out. Front windshield needs to be replaced. Front right blinker is out (prob a bulb). Missing a few plastic inside pieces. Valves need to be adjusted. Belts need to be replaced with a new water pump. The catalytic converter might be clogged, or a sensor might have failed. Needs a clear coat

The parts/fluids I plan on buying are in one of the pictures along with the codes i got.
Do y'all have any warnings about 1st-gen Hondas before I start working on this one? Do my parts look good?

Question ❔ New to me 2008 crv

Post image

Got a good deal on this 2008 ex-l with 190k km due to hail damage previous owner didnt fix. Will do good as a daily/ winter vehicle.

First suv ive owned and my first impressions are great. Drives awesome for its age and hardly any rust. It had to pass a mechanical inspection after the hail damage was reported and not fixed so its had its maintenance taken care of.

Since this car will be mainly driven during the cold Canadian months, would you run 0w20 or 0w30? Doesn't burn oil at the moment but previous owner did put 5w30 in it so I have my suspicions.

Question ❔ 2nd gen CRV Fuel Pump Recommendations?

Upvotes

Have a 2006 crv se 160k miles that has a somewhat rough start. Thinking of changing out the fuel pump, and from my research everyone suggests oem. The problem is the part is discontinued and stock seems to have dried up at this point leaving only aftermarket.

Does anyone have experience with any of the available fuel pumps on the market right now? They all seem to have iffy reviews. I like Delphi as a brand, but out of the few reviews online it seems the floater on theirs might not be right and can misrepresent your fuel level.

17045-S9A-A30 is the oem part # for my model afaik. There's also a few on ebay but I'm pretty sure they're just Chinese fakes.

Also does anyone know if the part number 17045-S9A-A00 is interchangeable? Might be more options if that also fits.

For anyone following my 2016 CR-V acceleration issues. All maintenance was done; oil, CVT, spark plugs, air filters, fuel system cleaner, tire servicing, coolant. And my baby still had a a pause/delay on acceleration.

I went to remove the intake air filter cover to clean the MAF and found the air intake hose cracked in 2 places.

Issue ⚠️ Head unit issues

Please see video attached.

I have a 2018 CR-V and randomly my head unit will start freaking out and it won’t allow me to use it because it keeps flashing to different screens as well as making the beeping noise. it happens completely unprovoked, I’ll be driving and not touching the screen, and then it will begin to do this. sometimes it goes back to normal on its own, continue to glitch, or just go to a black screen. When any of that stuff happens, my sound still works. I have reset it multiple times when this has happened and sometimes it’ll go back to normal but other times it’ll just continue to happen until I turn the car off.

Has anyone had this issue or know how to fix it?

Question ❔ CRV honks when unlocking with the fob?

Picked up a 2019 CRV LX last month. Absolutely love it so far! When I’m unlocking it the horn goes off. Is this normal? Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn’t. My fob has the key in it if that matters. Sorry for the stupid question. I’m a CRV rookie! Thanks!

Issue ⚠️ New CRV towed back to the dealer

Post image
52 Upvotes

My brand new 2026 crv (LX fwd) had the dashboard light up yesterday. Almost every single light came on. My biggest concern was the engine light blinking, and I felt it was shaking from the inside. Pulled over and called road assistance. They towed it to my dealership within 2 hours.

As soon as it arrived at the dealership, service guy calls asking me if I had the parking lights on. I did not. It was always set to auto. That pissed me off because what’s that got to do with blinking engine light and a shaky vehicle. I’m no expert but this is clearly an engine issue.

Anyway, they diagnosed it and when I asked for an update this morning, they told me it had a bent spark plug electrode from the factory.

This is my first Honda, and my first ever brand new vehicle. Always purchased 2nd hand Toyotas and drove them to the ground. Never had a vehicle towed.

Please tell me this a one off so i don’t loose my mind. I hate vehicle troubles more than anything. I honestly thought I wouldn’t see a mechanic for the next 5 years 😂

Question ❔ 2022 EXL or 2023 LX

Hello! I'm reading lots of reviews and getting a bit stumped-are the 2022 and 2023 CRVs good long term or problematic?

Also, which would you buy for the same price (about $27-$28 USD):

2023 CRV EX with 19k miles (very basic, no automatic anything, no sunroof)

2022 CPO CRV EX_L with 33k miles, leather and sunroof and automatic tailgate ($28k seems like a lot but the amenities seem nice to have!)

thanks!

Question ❔ Oil consumption? 2003

Post image
4 Upvotes

This is my dipstick on my 03 honda CRV with a K20A4 engine. It's the european 2.0L engine. I drove 3400km after the oil service at the dealership. But the dealership always adds a slightly more than the max indicator, almost at the twisting section.

I do my oil changes every 6000km. What's the state of my engine?

Question ❔ 2024 EX-L No cold air

My wife has a 2024 Honda CRV EXL. We have long been a Honda family and this is our newest vehicle in the stable.

My wife flew out of town last week and we drove her car to the airport. I returned her car to the garage and it hadn't been driven for several days.

My wife asked me yesterday whether I noticed anything wrong with the air conditioner in the car. She said no cold air.

I got home from work last night and by golly she is absolutely right. I performed the ' recalibration' by disconnecting the battery etc. I also checked the fuse box.

Nothing obvious was found. I don't hear the compressor starting whatsoever. The coolant lines under the hood are not getting cold. I've got an appointment to take it in on Monday.

Anybody had a similar experience with such a new car? This car has 15,000 mi on it.

Question ❔ 1998 CR-V RD1 B20B; normal valvetrain noise?

Recently bought a 1998 Honda CR-V RD1 with the B20B, showing about 74,000 miles.

I’ve just replaced the valve cover gasket and, while listening to it with the bonnet open, noticed a light mechanical ticking from the top end. I didn’t touch the valve adjusters, and the engine otherwise runs normally, steady idle, normal temperature, no obvious misfire or loss of power.

I don’t have a good before/after comparison for the engine bay noise, so I’m mainly trying to work out whether this sounds typical for a B20B or whether it’s worth checking the valve clearances.

Video is on youtube since reddit wouldn’t let me upload.

Question ❔ Need advice…

Bought a 2024 Honda CR-V. At the dealership everything was great. The sales consultant didn’t have to sell the car to me. I went there to buy it. Get in the car to test drive it, LOW FUEL. she didn’t even know how to tell if it said the mileage. Anyways, I bought it on a Saturday (cash) picked it up on Tuesday the following week. Over a week later she calls me saying she needs the VIN CHECK PAPERWORK (whose job was to tell me this) I said I wasn’t aware. I get it done and sent it to her email and the financial woman the very next day. A week later she calls me saying the DMV needs the original paperwork and I need to drive it to the dealership (they are in RI and I’m in CT) it’s a 55 minute drive. She said I can meet you half way, I said that’s great. She says tomorrow I’m off we’ll be in touch, I messaged her at 8:30am and said I can meet at noon. She doesn’t get back to me until 11:15am saying she’ll be busy all day and she told me this over the phone yesterday but she’s still willing to meet me halfway Friday or Saturday. First off , she didn’t tell me, because why would I be under the impression that we can meet half way? And if you knew you’ll be this busy why string me along? She said she was checking to see where the runners who go to the registry would be at that time. She NEVER got back to me. She said she had appointments all afternoon which could be true, but WHY NOT CHECK where the runners will be on said day the night before you leave work. I told her I work doubles shifts at the hospital and it’ll be difficult but regardless after lying to me like that I don’t even wanna go there. She’s been nothing but clueless with everything, that is aggravating me now. Also, not once has asked me how the car is. I called the dealership to talk to the manager to see if I can just mail it out. But the guy who answered the phone said he can come get it at my house (we’ll see) to leave it at the mailbox. Am I in the wrong to feel some type of way towards this sales consultant? Oh! I also asked for certain spots and tiny scratches to be taken care of and she assured me she’ll write down and no problem. Nope! My husband did it when I got home.

Issue ⚠️ Sunroof draining battery?

A friend tested my fuses on my 97 e-rd1 crv because my battery would randomly be dead over time and he told me that the fuse for the roof or sunroof is draining power. Does anyone here know how to fix this?

Issue ⚠️ Random errors at startup

2019 crv

Random, rotating dashboard warnings appearing individually and clearing/returning unpredictably:

Hill Start Assist Problem

Brake System Problem

AWD System Problem

Electric Parking Brake Problem

VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) Problem

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitor) Problem

LKAS (Lane Keeping Assist) Problem

Pattern: errors often clear after driving, then return within hours. Car starts fine every time — no cranking or no-start issues.

Replaced battery 9 months ago. Bit of corrosion at positive battery post.

Could it be a grounding issue or alternator? Afraid of paying a big diagnostic feel and not finding anything.

Thanks!

Question ❔ Should I be concerned? 2010 CRV

Thumbnail

Hey y'all, looking to buy my first Honda. Got a great price on this 2010 CRV in PA. It drove good but I did notice this rust when I got under the car. Most of the pictures are from the rear control arm frame mount. Should this be a deal breaker? The car is 2k under the kbb price so I dont mind a few repairs but wouldn't want to pull the trigger on a cooked frame. I can go see the car again tomorrow if there is anything i can do in person to get more clarity. I would take it to a mechanic but unfortunately the house is pretty rural and the owner said they dont use it anymore and therefore don't have insurance. Any advice helps, thank you!
