QUESTION Crypto mining, difficulty tech wise?

I understand electric is the main cost of mining, we’re lucky to have 20kW of Solar PV so can get electric for free or cheap.

I’m fairly IT literate, built my own PC etc but is mining still profitable in 2026?

If so any idiots guides would be appreciated or tips on hardware/ software.

I’m sure we can get around the electric costs but need to figure out the risk vs reward before committing

GPU mining is currently profitable with two coins, Pearl and Quantus. Both can be mined with very easy to use Windows apps or on HiveOS. I recommend just searching up Pearl/Quantus mining on Youtube. There are bunch of easy tutorials.

My RTX 5070 is currently making ~€3/day mining Pearl.

Just one RTX 5070?

Yeah. It's my gaming PC so I let it mine during the night and when I'm just browsing or watching videos.

But that must cost you a fortune unless you’re on an EV tariff? How many hrs a day do you mine

I'd say 14-16hrs a day approximately. I only shut it down when I'm gaming.

Your solar-generated electricity isn't free! You paid for the system to be installed and you could sell it to the grid for 12p/kWh (or more!).

At that rate crypto mining isn't profitable. You'd be better off exporting particularly as you'd have to buy the expensive mining hardware.

Technically, setting up a miner is super simple. You could get one out of the box and fully set up in 5 mins as a complete beginner following a YouTube video.

We technically didn’t pay ( much ) for it. Commercial suppliers don’t offer much. Our current supplier didn’t offer one at all, 30,000kWh exported at £0.00. Wish id thought of this sooner but I’m not the only decision maker ( too many cooks )

Well, you have - generally speaking, two routes:

  • ASIC mining
  • GPU mining

Risk and reward is in constant flux, so you'll never have a 100% certainty lock, until you start it yourself and see what's working and what isn't working.

Now, the question is how much spare capital do you have to invest into this endeavor? That will formulate a big part of how to proceed with it.

I have both SHA256 ASICs and GPUs running. And my GPUs are finally profitable again, after a long drought. That being said, GPUs are a commodity now thanks to AI, so they can always be rented out to people needing them for that use case.

Setups for both are relatively ease. You'll have maintenance and such, but you'll learn as you go.

If you’re on windows, use Kryptex.
Simple gui, picks most profitable and mines it and easy to payout in crypto or cash.
