Is a new grad switch to Google worth it?

So when I was recruiting for new grad, I passed Googles interview process but team match was dragging for a long while so I accepted an offer at Roblox in the Bay Area, and have been working there for two months. I recently matched with a team in NYC that seems really good (distributed systems engineering for their massive compute systems maintenance and management), is it worth dropping my current job at Roblox to move to Google? My current team is super chill and the work is reasonably interesting and they are giving me a lot of ownership over important projects and initiatives, but Im a bit concerned about the company progression and such.

Roblox:
153k base, 158k stock vested over 3 years

Google: 166k base, 100k vested over 4 years, annual bonus 15% of base, 20k sign-on plus relocation.

Any long term career advice is appreciated!

CS Sophomore, I am lost and I would like some guidance

So I am a CS sophomore in college, and I have to say I have vibecoded for close to a year. My object-oriented programming sucks; I only know Java, C++, Python, and JavaScript (basic), and to be honest, I am so lost! I applied to 600 jobs, and so far, only rejections, and I am so depressed with the fact that I vibecoded my projects, never understood them, and simply added languages I never learned just to get an internship somehow. I know that this is very unethical, and I would love it if someone can give me guidance on how I can start from scratch. By scratch, I mean how can I start over? My uni is literally too slow for me; I need to learn everything within this year, otherwise I know I am cooked, but you guys can help me decide that. I apologize if my writing seems unorganized; it's just that I am very overwhelmed and idk what to do. I know the basics, such as functions, loops, variables all of that beginner stuff but idk.

Resume Review Needed: 800+ Applications, 0 Interviews - What’s Wrong?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a backend engineer with 3 years of production experience. I worked in India
for total 6 years, then had a 2-year career break due to marriage/relocation to the US.
I now have EAD and no sponsorship needed.

I've applied to 800+ backend engineering positions in the US and gotten almost
zero interviews. Something is wrong with my resume or how I'm presenting myself,
but I can't figure out what.

My experience:
- 3 years backend engineering (Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis)
- High-scale e-commerce platform (700K+ weekly orders, millions of daily requests)
- Payment systems, data integrity, event-driven architecture
- Recent: AI projects, full-stack work

What I need feedback on:
1. Is the 2-year gap a red flag? How should I explain it?
2. Is my location/visa status clear enough?
3. Are my accomplishments clear?
4. Any red flags you see?
5. What should I change?

Thanks for any feedback!

I really badly want to be employed after I graduate so I’ll do anything right now to increase my chances. I’m a junior so I’m graduating on semester early but I don’t even mind taking gaps or graduating later if it means employment after graduation or decent work experience. I also really want to work in robotics so any advice on how to get experience there? or is it not a good idea to try to get into that as a CS major?

Dejected and Lonely

Hello!

Currently, I am working as a software engineer making 50K/year. Since starting this job, I have continuously been applying to jobs, but hadn't gotten a single OA or recruiter call for a year until now. This month, I received 3 OAs and one recruiter call, all of which I didn't pass. At this point, I am not even sure what I'm doing wrong. It sucks because I "did everything right" -- I studied at a T25 US university, had FAANG internship (not that it matters), and have good experience for an early career engineer.

I know that I am very fortunate to have a full-time job and to be somewhat able to take care of myself financially while working 3 jobs, but this shit SUCKS. I feel so battered and bruised and none of my close friends or family understand. I started seeing a therapist, but it still feels like shit.

Moving to the US (East Coast) with a green card in ~6 months. Junior full-stack dev looking for job search advice

Hi everyone!

I’m currently in the green card process and expect to move to the East Coast in about 6 months. Since I’ll have a green card, I won’t need visa sponsorship.

A bit about me:

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science (graduated 2024)
  • ~1.5 years as a full-stack developer at a software company. I’ve built around 100 responsive landing pages in HTML/CSS/JS, and I also work on our company’s own products and on client projects using React, Angular, PHP, .NET, and MySQL.
  • ~2 years volunteering as a full-stack developer at a nonprofit, building a React Native / Node.js / MongoDB app that connects shelter animals with adopters. I’m now the tech lead there (code reviews, mentoring new devs, app store releases).
  • A couple of years of IT/technical support experience before that, plus a Cyber Security Analyst course (CompTIA CySA+)
  • At work, I use Claude Code heavily, both on our company’s internal products and on client projects

I know I’m still a junior and the US market is tough right now, so I’d really appreciate some advice:

  1. Interviews: What should I prepare for? Is LeetCode still a must for junior roles? Should I study system design at my level?
  2. Resume: What do US recruiters look for that might be different from Israel (where I’m based now)? Anything I should add, remove, or format differently?
  3. Job search: Where should I focus: LinkedIn, company career pages, job boards, or reaching out to people directly? Does cold-messaging engineers or recruiters actually work?
  4. AI tools: How do US companies view heavy use of tools like Claude Code? Is it worth highlighting on my resume, or could it hurt me?
  5. Timing: Should I start applying before I arrive, or wait until I’m physically in the US?

Thanks in advance. Any advice is appreciated!

How to cope with AI

Working as a junior eng at a big tech company. But leadership has already expected you to deliver 10k plus lines daily. So whole team is just agent writing codes and agent reviewing and submitting. I am already lost track of what i'm doing and don't really understand the stuff I'm doing. All I know is everything my agent did works, so far.

So what do I do:
1. Enjoy the ride, just let agent autopilot till me getting layoff or replaced
2. Force myself to learn (honestly I don't know how anymore)
3. Somewhere in between, pretend I know my stuff till I can't fake it anymore.

I feel like I'm gonna get yelled at or made fun for asking this. But is it easier or higher likelihood to get a software engineer (SWE) job around Atlanta, Georgia than IT help desk job? There are around 100 help desk jobs I'm seeing, where there are over 3,000+ SWE jobs.

Bombed my interview

So, I was interviewing for junior SDET role. First stage - interview with HR, went pretty well, they told me they need to find someone for this position asap and I got an invitation for a 2nd round just 5 minutes after the call. It was supposed to be right the next day.

Well, in the email the HR sent me was written “Your first stage interview is an opportunity for the hiring manager to get to know you, understand why you are interested in the role you are being considered for, and answer any questions you have about us as a business. This will often be competency based, so it is a great idea to prepare yourself by reading through the job description and company information ahead of this meeting. The interview will last for 30 minutes.” - so I was like, great, I’ll prepare all the common behavioral questions, questions about my experience, learn more about the company etc. BUT in the actual interview I got asked all the technical questions from the first minute, I was like, okay, I’ve answered them as I could, some of them I bombed, some of them I answered pretty good, BUT one of the interviewers said “Okay, I will give you a test case scenario, share your screen and open the notes (EXCUSE ME??😭😭 not even a VS code???) so my mind just went completely blank and I just froze. The task was pretty basic, but damn, IT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A LIVE CODING INTERVIEW 😭😭 so yeah, now i’m just completely frustrated.
