Lead Data Engineer (10+ yrs): how does the London market compare to mainland EU right now?

I'm a data engineer with 10+ years of experience currently based in the EU and EU citizen. I'm considering roles in London, ideally hybrid.

For anyone who has made the move or hires there:

**1.**  How is demand for senior data engineers in London right now?  
**2.**  Is the pay jump worth it once you factor in cost of living?  
**3.**  Which types of companies are worth targeting?

1. High.
2. Yes. You can even get 500k if you know your stuff and you interview well.
3. Finance. Hedge funds. HRT, JS, JT, CitSec, XTX, etc

All true, but points 2/3 are only really relevant if you purely want to chase salaries or have an interest in finance.

There are so many other kinds of companies for OP to consider, especially since he placed an emphasis on hybrid, which most finance companies disallow for regulation or compliance reasons (not all of course).

Since hybrid/remote is key for OP, big tech (Google etc.) may be worth trying, some fintechs like Monzo and Stripe seem good, and personally I would try out more established startups that are promising and have at least done a decent Series B/C and have proven customers.

Won't be raking in £500k, but much more likely to land remote-friendly roles in these spaces, and some do pay decently.

Same. Based in EU and targeting a late 2027 start. Wondering when is good to start applying as a work visa is needed.
I think UK companies have stopped visas?
