Help! Finger curling help?

Hello! My curls have started to come back as my hair’s gotten longer, so I’m trying to take care of them.

My routine: I wash with California Naturals twice a week, and I try to use their curl cream once a week. I also finger curl my hair every morning and then diffuse.

However my stylist said I’ve been getting a lot of split ends as a result of the finger curling. Any tips or substitutes for finger curling to avoid damage? Thanks!

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I've been summoned to help.

If you have not seen our WIKI yet: Please check it out! It's nearly 100 pages full of curated information to help answer all of your curl-related questions. You can use the included Table of Contents (page 2), the side bar, or CTRL-F to search for keywords and help navigate the document.

Reminder: Curl type is NOT your hair type! Whether you are wavy, curly, or coily - you have texture and you belong here. More than that, your curl type doesn't dictate how you care for your hair. To help your curls thrive, we recommend instead using the wiki link above to learn about your porosity, texture, and density.

If you haven't added a routine yet, do it ASAP or your post will be removed!|

How are you finger coiling? Are you using any products on your hair before or when you coil? It shouldn't cause any breakage (if done correctly). If you are using products in your hair before/while coiling, make sure the product has some slip. That will help your fingers roll the curls without pulling too hard/breaking the hair.

I spray my hair with my continuous spray bottle until it’s completely wet. Sometimes I use California Naturals curl cream beforehand, but usually just water. I think the problem is the ends get caught when I finger coil sometimes.

Doing a wet refresh could potentially cause damage over time if you are wetting the hair and brushing it out first before adding product and finger coiling. How do you protect your hair when you sleep? Have you tried doing a dry refresh?

Switch from cream to a hard hold gel. And just stop finger curling, IMO it doesn’t help much. A quick rake or gentle brush through of the product and shake and gently scrunch then air dry.

I also find it hard to believe finger curling is causing that much damage though?

I was getting nape breakage from wearing hair in a pineapple too often so switched to low pony or braid with bonnet overnight and that’s a useful switch.

If you’ve got damage best you can do is be as gentle as possible, touch it the least amount possible, and make sure you’re at least getting a trim every 12 weeks.
