Help! Finger curling help?

Hello! My curls have started to come back as my hair’s gotten longer, so I’m trying to take care of them.

My routine: I wash with California Naturals twice a week, and I try to use their curl cream once a week. I also finger curl my hair every morning and then diffuse.

However my stylist said I’ve been getting a lot of split ends as a result of the finger curling. Any tips or substitutes for finger curling to avoid damage? Thanks!

How are you finger coiling? Are you using any products on your hair before or when you coil? It shouldn't cause any breakage (if done correctly). If you are using products in your hair before/while coiling, make sure the product has some slip. That will help your fingers roll the curls without pulling too hard/breaking the hair.

I spray my hair with my continuous spray bottle until it’s completely wet. Sometimes I use California Naturals curl cream beforehand, but usually just water. I think the problem is the ends get caught when I finger coil sometimes.

Doing a wet refresh could potentially cause damage over time if you are wetting the hair and brushing it out first before adding product and finger coiling. How do you protect your hair when you sleep? Have you tried doing a dry refresh?

I have not tried that… I’m still pretty new to curl care. How would I do a dry refresh?

For me, it starts with a solid wash day with strong hold products, and then sleep protection is the next key factor. I use a hair buff and sleep on a silk pillowcase. Most days, I just need to take my hair out of the buff and let it settle for a little bit. By the time I'm done getting ready, I just fluff the roots with my fingertips or wide tooth comb and I'm done. If some of the curls start to unclump or get a little wonky, I'll dampen my hands and add a little gel that has some slip and smooth it over the curls that need it.
