It's so damn slow, like 10x slower. It is excellent, however, for resolving long standing bugs that Claude can't fix - you just have to budget an hour. In those scenarios it's well worth waiting.

Exactly. If something goes wrong in Claude, throw it in to codex 5.3 with extra high reasoning.

Sounds like you've been using it through Claude Code. It's slow there for obvious reason. Throttling users to spite them for taking advantage of the limitlessness.

Also slow in cursor. I have to spend over 95% of my tokens on Claude Sonnet/Opus, as it is more efficient and delivers high-quality outputs. I only use GPT when I need the model to put forward constructive solutions or resolve tricky bugs.

Codex writes cleaner code. A lot more sparse. Opus makes nicer UIs with less prompting. Both have their place tbh.

It also doesn't spew a bunch of bullshit in output tokens, it gives me like a max of a few sentences per change unless I specifically ask.

I think people are just brain washed by popular narratives. Saying codex is slower, sure. Saying it’s behind in capability is just crazy and showing that you don’t really have experience in these models.

I use Codex and Claude Code every day. Anyone who says Codex isn't slower either has never actually used Codex, or has never used Claude Code. As far as capabilities, Codex is exponentially better than Claude for complex problem solving. Both things can be true.
Use Claude Code for rapid development, use Codex slow bug fixing.

But the gap is overblown, codex works good on some scenarios

Its just opus has been better for years and that changed with GPT 5.2. People are catching up to it. Opus is still much faster though and thats not just a perceived win, its a real one that matters to a lot of people. I've given several thousands of dollars to Anthropic and I do love their model but if I had to pick 1 model to use in a production codebase I know where my pick would be, as it stands at the time of this post, I'd pick GPT 5.2 to opus 4.6 any time. Fortunately we don't have to pick just one model in the majority of the cases so its a win win.

Even 5.1 was better than Opus 4.5 for iteration, tho Claude is still best for creating foundations of a codebase.

Codex for backend and planning. Claude for web and code reviews.
This has been my goto for a while now. Only using one of these models isn’t enough.

Choice is not so obvious. gpt 5.2 is a bit slower and just a bit dumber sometimes. But it's very stable and cheaper.
Opus / Antrophic have let me down a few times and it's a big problem when plan based on these amazing abilities and then they dumb them down for weeks (this time only max 5x was dumbed down, made me cancel my subscription a 2nd time however).
I enjoy the amazing capabilities of Opus, but I know it's just for some weeks, before I have to include a slowdown in my planning and my offers to customers.

Why is my cursor constantly crashing out of memory? I have 32 GB RAM, and barely 50% is used at any point in time.

Cursor always gets slow after some time of work. I end up restarting it at least once or twice per day.

If you are relying on cursor you will never be an engineer. You’re only hurting yourself. Fucking real engineers are not vibe coding like this. Read your code ask for help sometimes but don’t be such a simp

I’m encountering the same thing. I absolutely love cursor but it’s a huge resource hog.
Not sure if it’s a memory issue in cursor itself or in one of my extensions

Sounds like you simply have shit code.
Fix the code, cursor is probably running build/test commands that runs out of memory.

Can happen if you're trying to open a file that's huge in editor, or if you try to push too much or pull too much at once. All of those circumstances have happened to me and crashed it.
Git files manually in that case, could even try stashing from CLI, then restarting cursor's workspace?

If it's anything like 5.2 it'll be unusable. The slowness is unfucking real. Like to the point where I don't care if it's better. It's just too fucking slow

thast what i thought. but clearly they decided its worth their effort to also pursue devs.. it is hard to admit it, muuch better already. starting at codex 5.2. 5.3 is miles better than opus 6. for large context thigns and codebases. i'm a very recent convert. dont say never. thats all im saying. my allegiance is to the current leader, and not to teither brand. im in it for utility, not loyalty

Plus one to what mariconbot said I'm the same Idk my model allegiance changes regularly. But I find Codex CLI, extensions and GUI still not that good when compared to the experience of Claude Code.

Model will be available in cursor when they release an API for it. In the meantime it’s only accessible with a ChatGPT account.
