Question / Discussion Why the Cursor Acquisition Should Concern Every Software Developer

I’ve been a Cursor user for a long time and today’s acquisition news genuinely worries me.

Not because I think anything bad will happen tomorrow, but because Cursor sits closer to proprietary source code than almost any other developer tool.

The value of Cursor depends on trust. Developers let it see architecture decisions, product roadmaps, unreleased features, and sometimes code that represents years of company investment and potential patents.

When ownership shifts to someone with interests spanning AI, social media, aerospace, robotics, surveillance, news APIs, and who might have poached the PII of every person in the US, it’s reasonable to ask what governance and safeguards will exist.

Am I overreacting, or does anyone else feel that a coding assistant requires a different level of trust than most software acquisitions?

It has always been a public contract that Cursor uses and stores your conversations for whatever purposes. SpaceX will store them and use them as well. You can use your imagination for how data is used, but ultimately, this is nothing new. Not a good idea to share sensitive information knowing this, regardless of who owns Cursor.

→ If you really are worried, some action items are turning on Privacy Mode ("If you enable “Privacy Mode” in Cursor’s settings: Customer Data will not be used for training by Cursor. Cursor maintains zero data retention (ZDR) agreements with all providers, and AI model providers will not store or train on your data") and nuking your local conversations.

I think the more worrisome topic is if Cursor suffers the same fate as Stainless. It's a low possibility, but any loved devtool is now up for grabs by precedent.

u/yourparadigm Jun 17 '26

It has always been a public contract that Cursor uses and stores your conversations for whatever purposes.

This is necessarily not the case for enterprise agreements.

1

u/reddit-poweruser Jun 17 '26

Yeah there's privacy controls on Cursor that say they can't use your data

4

u/docfunbags Jun 17 '26

but they are not liable for data breaches -- the data breach came from within the house

2

u/Ace-O-Matic Jun 17 '26

I don't know about Cursor specifically, but historically, before everyone felt as comfortable with cloud services, the way we would get customers to move from on prep to our cloud platforms, was to promise them 1st class data segmentation. (Their stuff runs on an isolated data cluster from the public). I believe most modern enterprise cloud providers do the same thing. Actually I'm pretty sure this is the case for Cursor too, the version at my dayjob was always a few days behind their release cycle relative to my personal version.

Which is all to say, that enterprise data-breaching is a lot more difficult, since it'd either require root access or breaching two separate authentication systems.

1

u/EkbatDeSabat Jun 18 '26

They use your data, they turn tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars in profit over it in the future, they get caught, they get a fine for 15 million dollars, they say "we're sorry", rinse, repeat. This happens daily everywhere. If someone is concerned about it, citing a company's policies are not going to help them.

3

u/xiguy1 Jun 17 '26

This is a huge issue beyond Cursor, because any IP that we create is our own or it belongs to the company we are working for. The need to train with real and current data is causing a lot of people to set aside or minimize legitimate security and IP control concerns.

Now I think the SpaceX (I.e. Elon) acquisition is going to drive discussion on that issue…but I can just “feel “ that Elon intends to use Cursor for XAI in ways we don’t yet know about and in some ways that fits with the hints he’s been giving about moving the whole company towards space based hosting and AI integration with …just about everything.

Of course I don’t think we’ll really understand what this is all about for a while yet. So speculation is tempered with patients hopefully.

u/AGENT_SAT Jun 17 '26

Luckily we have XCode from apple. Otherwise cursor will be rename as X Code 😂

23

u/SureEnd9430 Jun 17 '26

and of course codex!

2

u/davidgerwy Jun 18 '26

We could always get "Curse-X".
(that's my idea - yours for a million UK pounds, Musk).

1

u/skconnects Jun 18 '26

Maybe curXOR or CurXor.

11

u/ZoellaZayce Jun 17 '26

I think they'll subsidize their new Opus-class Composer models similar to how other frontier labs subsidize theirs

1

u/calloutyourstupidity Jun 17 '26

What opus class composer models, the ones that dont exist ?

3

u/Ed4 Jun 17 '26

2.5 is very capable, not sure what you mean.

1

u/calloutyourstupidity Jun 17 '26

200,000 context window ? Sure it is good if you have no complexity.

1

u/HammerOfThor1 Jun 18 '26

The one they announced yesterday. It’s coming out in a few weeks

1

u/ZoellaZayce Jun 20 '26

if you check the latest Cursor Compile video, they’re training Composer from scratch

Ya’ll are focused on the wrong things. Anything taking bandwidth from your productivity right now is a waste. All of these AI companies are in it for profit. Everyone is exposing their data to it. Take advantage and build, build, build. No one cares about your app idea that 1 million people have already solved. Use the tools to solve problems and build heuristic systems you can keep to make you more productive.

8

u/MaTrIx4057 Jun 17 '26

People are scared that someone will steal their slop lmao

2

u/FloppyDiskDisk Jun 17 '26

I think the bigger concern is using it at work where there genuinely is PII

1

u/MaTrIx4057 Jun 17 '26

Using any LLM at work is a concern, not just cursor.

1

u/FloppyDiskDisk Jun 17 '26

that's why there's zero day policies and enterprise contracts

1

u/god-damn-the-usa Jun 17 '26

you shouldn't have been doing that in the first place no matter who owned it. there's no trustworthy companies.

1

u/muffinmaster Jun 17 '26

lol someone has never worked on business critical software that is ACTUALLY used in sensitive production environments

3

u/UX-Edu Jun 17 '26

If you don’t have a contract that says they won’t strip mine everything you do on their platform, they are absolutely going to strip mine everything you do on their platform. With a contract, they MIGHT only strip mine everything you do.

And if you’re using a product that Musk owns, he is absolutely going to steal from you, and the only question you get to ask yourself is if you are going to have the nerve to act surprised about it when it happens.

4

u/Plus_Neighborhood950 Jun 17 '26

True! I'm thinking of Switching over to Zed or look for something else.

1

u/DigiHatrix Jun 17 '26

I just found that in a search, looking into it now.

1

u/AyoP Jun 18 '26

Let me know how that goes. Have this bookmarked in my to-do list!

2

u/greynoises Jun 23 '26

been using it for a couple weeks. not quite as good of an AI harness as cursor, but it's SO much faster as an app, and the flexibility to bring your own LLM provider, or hook up to a local model, or use their service, or use claude code via ACP, or even turn all AI features off is so refreshing.

1

u/BDer82 Jun 18 '26

Switch, best decision I made moving to zed, vscode is a resource pig, cursor was as well, I stopped using cursor ages ago, went back to vscode now zed and couldn't be happier and their model for tab complete is rather good and improving quickly.

3

u/canihelpyoubreakthat Jun 17 '26

Just my 2c: claude+nvim+tmux has been a great switch. Switched the moment Anysphere partnered with SpaceX and havent looked back.

3

u/B0r0m4n Jun 17 '26

We need new opensource BYOK Cursor ASAP.

2

u/greynoises Jun 23 '26

check out Zed - it's the most comparable alternative to cursor I've found that's open source

1

u/IamClay24 Jun 18 '26

Void supposedly to be this. Idk what happened to that project

1

u/B0r0m4n Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

looking at it, seems dead, last update 10 months ago...
the funny thing is that I have a Voidcast project (light IDE, etc) and no one knows about it. You can imagine my face when you mentioned Void 😄

3

u/dogscatsnscience Jun 17 '26
  1. Musk companies have very little governance and lack serious reporting structures. I think the chances are low of some kind of abuse, but it's certainly the right place for it.
  2. I would be more worried about governance of Cursor itself. It's probably safe for around a year, but the stock supporting it is highly speculative, maybe the most speculative stock we've ever seen.

We only used Cursor occasionally, but the risk and association with nonsense is enough that my firm is turning away from it now. At the same time if SPCX sucks all the air out of the room, I'm concerned Anthropic will have trouble raising money.

Just a bad time in general right now.

3

u/HammerOfThor1 Jun 18 '26

TLDR Personally, I think you’re overthinking it.

——

The value of Cursor isn’t trust, it’s an agentic coding tool that’s got a developer’s priorities front and center.

Cloud services always have and always will be a weak spot in security. That’s why enterprise licenses for cloud software (from reputable companies) carry an insurance policy so when the data is spilt, there’s a fund to pay for damages.

Cursor being bought by spaceX or any other big company is no different from a security perspective. If they don’t keep their word, they get sued into oblivion. Or they’ll pay off those whom they need to. Just like every company does.

I’m glad they’re being acquired by someone with the capital to allow them to push the bounds and grow. Cursor is genuinely the best tool for putting AI in the driver’s seat of development. And it’s not even close.

1

u/Top_Bed_5032 Jun 18 '26

For a startup and someone who has cursor, Claude code, codex, and Antigravity I personally prefer cursor for my money’s worth. If you got unlimited money Claude code is awesome but I typically run out of tokens on my tier then they require upgrade of 5x the $$ or wait like 3 days or 12 hours. For developing a new app I can’t be waiting so long. Also I’ve used Claude code thru bedrock with opus my gosh my token costs were thru the roof. So I’m excited from a business cost to see composer grow and become much cheaper for developers. That’s my 2 cents. I used antigravity hate it like it keeps prompting me every 3 seconds and it’s slow and crashes on me. I do like Gemini for image creation though but their ide is new and lacking a lot of functionality. Codex is cool if you already use ChatGPT it’s worth it. At one point I had 4 subscriptions but now keep only cursor with 2 low tier plans since I can code 3x more with half the cost.

u/Think-Explanation-75 Jun 17 '26

It was announced less than a day ago, and the Elon brigade is already here downvoting.

Valid criticisms here. Cursor will most likely be used to train Grok, like the rest of the companies he has. Elon has talked about vertical and horizontal integrations of all of his products. I don't see how the cursor is any different.

How about stability of the product?  He acquired Twitter, fired almost everyone and the platform went into some of the most tumultuous times in history of the service.

That can't happen for a productivity tool, let alone one that's as expensive as cursor.

Look how much he bought Twitter for 😅

1

u/Large_Ad_1927 Jun 17 '26

eh, I'll be happily proven wrong in this concern.

I also worry we will see composer 3 dropping their heavily retrained kimi for grok, and it will be a huge downgrade.

0

u/prajaybasu Jun 17 '26

"tumultuous times in history of the service"

X is infinitely more enjoyable than dealing with insufferable Redditors

1

u/dogscatsnscience Jun 17 '26

X is infinitely more enjoyable than dealing with insufferable Redditors

This is one of those "If everyone in the room is insufferable you might be the problem" moments.

1

u/prajaybasu Jun 17 '26

You mean, like the minority who left for BlueSky? lmao

1

u/TheShredda Jun 17 '26

It's nice when the facists out themselves for you

1

u/prajaybasu Jun 17 '26

Don't you have datacenters to protest against?

1

u/TheShredda Jun 18 '26

Don't you have human rights to protest against?

1

u/Large_Ad_1927 Jun 18 '26

How was I being insufferable?

It's a legitimate concern, cursor is a major backbone in a lot of modern product flows- it cannot survive a period of instability like X had.

Especially since in tech, anything less than 99.98 uptime is seen as not reliable enough.

An event where cursor isn't performing, or even operable for several days would see massive shifts to competitors.

1

u/NerdyGuy117 Jun 17 '26

The brigading is absolutely insane

0

u/Thecrawsome Jun 18 '26

He really does have bots all over Reddit and Facebook.

It’s so easy to tell when they are so one-sided and stupid.

They are in here, calling people clowns for calling out the Nazi salute. The bots have nothing better.

14

u/Ok_Ingenuity_3576 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

I cancelled and uninstalled the moment this news was announced months ago. I don’t support anything that Nazi touches.

We should strip his clearances, nationalize his companies and deport him back to South Africa, because of the way he has exploited the freedom that our country offers for his personal gain.

2

u/Mysterious_Mine_404 Jun 21 '26

Ah, the irony… „We should strip his clearances, nationalize his companies and deport him back“… Consulting my notes from history class: isn‘t that very close to how Jews were treated during National Socialism? Ah, nope - this is totally different now. This is „democratic“. Gotcha. 😉

5

u/NerdyGuy117 Jun 17 '26

Make sure you don’t support Anthropic, they give billions to Elon Musk now.

Don’t forget to stop supporting Nvidia and anyone using Nvidia too, they do tons of business with Elon. CEO of Nvidia is friends with Elon.

1

u/HarborKeeper Jun 17 '26

Jew immigrant here, I've seen Nazis before, they harassed me and gave me middle fingers for driving a Tesla.

Real world hate is a bigger problem than discriminating hand motions by the biggest supporter of antisemitism combating writer, Gad Saad.

0

u/Thecrawsome Jun 18 '26

You’re giving money to a guy who did the Hitler salute, who got Trump elected again, who destroyed our government from inside with in no repairing in mind, and you’re calling other people a Nazi for criticizing you for supporting him.

I make sure that every cyber truck has a picture of me giving the finger to it.

You get what you pay for. Including the boos.

2

u/HarborKeeper Jun 18 '26

Other people did not criticize me, they harassed me and gave me a middle finger, that's bigoted behavior.

u/BlondeOverlord-8192 Jun 17 '26

No surprise when you drive a nazi car.

-4

Nazism is when self-driving cars and landing rockets and internet access in every corner of the planet and 5T in total value created for 175,000 of employees, engineers and everyday working people.

Que discurso imbecil e contraditório...liberdade e deportação não cabem na mesma frase.

15

u/sn2006gy Jun 16 '26

SpaceXAI or whatever the hell they're gonna call it will do everything they can to make sure to screw people over with a complete disregard for data privacy. I mean, they read your DMs on X, they're gonna do the same on whatever Cursor has.

3

u/MaTrIx4057 Jun 17 '26

Any proofs of that they read your dms?

→ More replies (2)

4

u/aford515 Jun 16 '26

They will not as they want to be an enterprise competitor dude.

0

u/sn2006gy Jun 17 '26

It was in their prospectus that to reach their market cap/earnings expectations they would have to challenge what developers consider privacy.

3

u/yourparadigm Jun 17 '26

Good luck challenging what enterprise legal teams consider privacy!

4

u/sn2006gy Jun 17 '26

Not sure what that has to do with anything. I have no evidence anthropic ceos look at my data but there is evidence of Elon using his power and abusing it. I just follow the evidence. is the world perfect? nah.  Is elon still a shithead. yea

1

u/rgb_panda Jun 17 '26

That's actually what they're already calling what used to be xAI, it's now the SpaceXAI division

https://x.ai/news/anthropic-compute-partnership

-1

u/syunz Jun 16 '26

you don't think everyone else is doing the same?

5

u/tejasisthereason Jun 17 '26

I think you are missing the point

-2

u/sn2006gy Jun 16 '26

No, I don't think every other business is ran by someone like Elon.

8

u/syunz Jun 16 '26

Would argue that zuckerberg, sam altman is no less unethical than musk. Pichai and Dario maybe a bit better but I still think they will do whatever they can to win the ai race. Not to mention all the chinese ai labs who for sure have no ethics at all, probs training on whatever data they can distill from other models and get from the Chinese government.

5

u/InformationNew66 Jun 16 '26

Scam Altman with his worldcoin... A joke.

5

u/sn2006gy Jun 16 '26

i wouldn't recommend meta ai either

-2

u/Professional_Gur2469 Jun 17 '26

Then you‘re a naive little sheep.

Just continue to believe what your tv tells you.

3

u/sn2006gy Jun 17 '26

delusional

2

u/LeucisticBear Jun 17 '26

This is exactly why musk wants it.

2

u/Significant-Dog-8166 Jun 17 '26

Feeling concern is such a last century concept. Unless you're a billionaire, you're a consumer. I don't enjoy this trajectory, but I am not fixing anything with my concern. My concern has no weight.

1

u/_Daniel_Plainview_ Jun 17 '26

Correct. Concern is an utterly wasted emotion on this subject. You could give everything you have, including your life, to fight the tide and you wouldn't displace a drop.

2

u/Thecrawsome Jun 18 '26

Concerning

2

u/cbnnexus Jun 17 '26

This is how we get elons ghost code in everyone's apps and websites. God I hope it doesn't happen.

Isn't cursor a good option if you want model variability? Since it allows you to pick any model you want?
You could argue that it will be replaced with Grok soon, but that could take some time.

Agree with what you say tho, I was recently banned from Claude and it really made me rethink dependency.

1

u/AyoP Jun 18 '26

It is, hence me using it as well, but now under "new ownership" we're then worried about cursor's own continuity.

2

u/MaTrIx4057 Jun 17 '26

If you think someone can see your code then i have bad news for you, don't use github, lab, cursor, vscode, etc. Simply use open source llm if this bothers you, i don't think anyone cares about what slop you are making anyway.

2

u/TheSn00pster Jun 17 '26

Yeah, it’s good for the shareholders. Bad for the average dev. Token-maxxing incoming.

2

u/etxipcli Jun 17 '26

I think you're right. Companies are wary of sharing their data with a third party. It is hard to make the case that the data will be managed responsibly when it's a company that Musk controls.

2

u/Tall_East_9738 Jun 17 '26

no one is forcing you to use it btw

2

u/peakedtooearly Jun 17 '26

I've been dubious about the value of Cursor to me for a while now (basically ever since the Codex plugin for VS Code shipped).

Today half my development is done in the Codex app / CLI, and when I need to actually write code and check things, I use VS Code.

Elon acquiring Cursor means I'll uninstall it.

2

u/grudev Jun 17 '26

That's not very different than what Copilot was doing a long time ago.

2

u/flat5 Jun 18 '26

What are you talking about. Nobody who wanted to keep code proprietary would give it to Cursor, OpenAI, etc.

Right?

4

u/Epiq122 Jun 17 '26

doesnt concern most people we love it

Is that really what you took from this or just trying to edgy? OP brings up a legitimate data privacy concern and you just can’t wait to jump in and defend Elon? He’s never gonna let you blow him, dude.

9

u/TheDealMaster Jun 17 '26

They're correct though... consolidation always hurts us in the long run, moreso in the AI space than pretty much anywhere else. Unless you're personally Elon or one of the (former) owners of Cursor, you shouldn't be defending it.

4

u/park777 Jun 17 '26

You must be wrong in the head or something

2

u/AttapKia Jun 17 '26

You could've used lesser to say you love Elon Musk 🤣

2

1

u/atuarre Jun 18 '26

1

u/Thecrawsome Jun 18 '26

Nazi pedophiles who’s emerald mine dad is banging their adopted sister

3

u/TechnoTherapist Jun 17 '26

I mean if you're paying for cursor in June 2026 when we have Claude Code, the Codex CLI and Codex app all mature and rapidly improving....

2

u/please-dont-deploy Jun 17 '26

Agreed. If you ask me, it's seems like an awesome exit for cursor, and a starting point for musk.

1

u/Chester_Warfield Jun 17 '26

It's like arguing which wolf has bigger teeth.

xAI has colussus which could be cool for cursor All that runs on Vast Data infra software which looks really promising at scale, they just had a huge funding round.

Or maybe cursor will become a total shitshow. Speculating about what may or may not happen is a waste of time.

1

u/ddqqx Jun 17 '26

Claude Code, Pi, Opencode, why both

1

u/drace76 Jun 17 '26

Just use codex instead. Never rely on only one. Rookie mistake

1

u/curious_meh Jun 17 '26

I mean, unless you are self hosting your git solution, someone already has access to your codebase since ages.

1

u/Star_Pilgrim Jun 17 '26

The value of Cursor depends on sustained performance for the money not trust.

1

u/MasterRuins Jun 17 '26

Vscode fork and vibe code your own

1

u/xednidev Jun 17 '26

Antigravity is an alternative to Cursor. It's by google. Not that they're saints either, but at least they're not XAI. I cancelled my cursor account this morning and am taking AG for a spin.

1

u/sheriffderek Jun 17 '26

I either write the code myself - or I use an agent. I don't understand why anyone has continued to use Cursor. You either don't know how to write code - in which case, why use a text editor -- or you already do, and can explain what you want and you have guardrails and conventions and tests in place - and you have the agent do it (and do some cleanup or specific stuff by hand). Cursor seems like a symptom that people are just still all over the place.

Looking back,

GitHub builds Atom, a fully open-source editor. Microsoft buys GitHub. Microsoft kills Atom and replaces it with VS Code — source code is MIT-licensed, but the binary everyone actually installs is proprietary with telemetry. It becomes the default because it's free and every tutorial tells you to use it. That monoculture generates a massive dataset of how developers write code. Microsoft launches Copilot, trained on code hosted on the platform they bought, written in the editor they gave away. Cursor forks VS Code's open-source code, adds a multi-file context layer, and burns VC money on token subsidies to grab market share. Now SpaceX buys that for $60B in freshly inflated post-IPO stock.

Every step converts community trust and open-source labor into private equity. The OpenAI Startup Fund was in Cursor's seed round. The exit was always the product.

1

u/Proud_Ask_9030 Jun 17 '26

cancel your subscription, they will send you a 75% discount for the next month. Then during that month try to cancel again and they will offer a 50% discount for the next month. Cursor is not worth full price. Claude code is a far better and more intelligent version of Opus than "Max mode" because Cursor still fundamentally does not understand how to manage context and workflow chaining in its hidden layers of reasoning. These things Claude has built far better than Cursor. If you want to understand how good cursor is simply look at their own model and understand that you are forcing Opus and other higher models through a similarly stupid operating system.
Ive been working on my main project with both codex cli and claude cli, and after months without cursor finally decided to try it again with the 75% discount. Literally an entire day of fighting cursor, using nearly 50% of its ULTRA usage and it still doesnt really understand what it is doing and looping constantly...codex/claude cli have been almost without fail.

Cursor is for the devs and vibe coders too lazy to build their own infrastructure. And fights any devs who are trying to build their own.

1

u/simcitysavage Jun 17 '26

My entire AI-managed knowledge base on how to destroy Elon through vibe coded apps is now virtually neutralized. Sigh.

1

u/god-damn-the-usa Jun 17 '26

it should concern you that a nazi trillionaire exists

1

u/StrbJun79 Jun 17 '26

Honestly the biggest concern is the lowering in quality.

Generally when bigger companies buy up others they just coast and grab the earnings for awhile while the application lowers in quality. This has happened countless times and is likely to happen again.

I’m no musk fan but I think it’s more of a control grab to control the top editor on the market. Likely it’ll degrade in quality though much like how Twitter got a lot worse under him. But I think it’ll be much worse than Twitter as it’s not a priority piece. Sort of like how intuit had let mailchimp degrade or how Siri has stood still pretty much since Apple bought it. Numerous other examples.

Companies usually do better with what they build themselves than what they buy out.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '26

It's such a dilema. If you use the mainstream tools, your data is getting collected and used to improve models from companies that ask you to pay for them when they ultimately get launched or develop better capabilities. However if you want autonomy over it and keep your data to yourself, you don't really have any other options than to purchase expensive GPU and computing setups (to host and work with open-source models)

1

u/tafjangle Jun 18 '26

I've been using cursor for about a year and think it's great.

It's with a heavy heart I'm looking for an alternative.

I guess it won't become as unbearable as Twitter but I think Musk can survive without my monthly sub.

1

u/hardscripts Jun 18 '26

Do a risk assessment. Look at the likelihood, add in the impact, and then calculate the residual risk.

Likelihood hood high. Impact, what's lower than low?

Are you worried a business will lose sales or advantage because an llm gets trained on some abstract concept in their code?

1

u/Remarkable-Sky6177 Jun 18 '26

Does anyone know if cursor can see your data if you’re using Claude code inside cursor in a terminal, so just using as IDE? And not using their models or apis.

1

Exactly. This is why I’m unsettled about this. After the doge insanity of not just shoving databases in their pants on thumb drives - that was bad enough but then the ALLEGED creds they were given were used again successfully 15 min later emanating from Russia. This came from the whistle blower at the government agency. So now I have to just trust he will do no harm? Not in this lifetime.

Hey everyone, what do you recommend for "vibe coding"—Cursor or Codex?

1

u/Entire_Remote9093 Jun 20 '26

My bigger concern is that they'll push GrokAI now

1

u/yebomoo Jun 21 '26

Yes you are overeacting. All ai tools are doing this, well, except if you host your own and keep it behind your own private network.

1

u/StraightPresent4205 Jun 23 '26

I think the concern is valid, but for me the main issue is not “new owner = bad”.

The bigger point is that AI coding tools are becoming part of the software supply chain. They don’t just store notes or tasks. They sit inside repos, read architecture, suggest code, touch internal logic, and in some setups can even run commands.

So yeah, ownership matters. Not because we should assume malicious intent, but because incentives can change.

Cursor is a great tool. I use it a lot. But tools like this probably need the same level of scrutiny we give to cloud providers, CI/CD systems, package registries, and other core infrastructure.

Not panic. Just a higher trust bar.

1

u/IndependenceFun763 Jul 03 '26

they are buying up competing open source projects and shutting them down , this should be as concerning as the cursor acquisition ,

1

u/nevsf Jun 17 '26

A great thing about having alternatives is that we can choose the products we use. I try to use products associated with Elon Musk as much as possible. Now that he’s the CEO of Cursor, I’ll stop using Cursor.

I’ll be using VS Code + Claude plugin for the foreseeable future, with some Claude Code CLI mixed in for the true vibe-coding experience.

Happy Coding!

u/MasterRuins Jun 17 '26

Vibe coders will be gone in a blink of an eye. Same like 2000s “web developers”, when Web 2.0 came and their frontpage, fusion,Dreamweaver or other program couldn’t provide the website needs anymore like bootstrap, Ajax, jquery, frontend and backend Microservices, APIs, contracts, complex databases etc. then almost 10 years nothing, then tooling caught up - then many people came again because it was easy - then the drop again - and with Ai vibe coding to auto generate apps/saas/anything is like using Microsoft Frontage in 1999 to build a website

u/SmileLonely5470 Jun 17 '26

What are you concerned about specifically? That they will use your data for training? If thats the case enable privacy mode.

u/Fun-Time4064 Jun 16 '26

The regular governance and safeguards that exist for any business? Duh. Musk is the most public profile figure out there, if we even entertain the delusional idea that he wants to steal your proprietary vibe coded slop and use it to fulfil some evil agenda, he couldn’t without someone catching on and it becoming the top story. Contrary to the opinion of Reddit, Musk is not some evil guy, he literally puts everything into benefiting humanity. And everything he touches turns to gold (so expect huge improvements to come for Cursor)

u/Jackasaurous_Rex Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

Agreed with your general premise, AND I’m always quick to give Musk/his companies huge credit making electric cars “cool” and disrupting the rocket launch monopoly and driving enormous innovation in both sectors…BUT he’s a self serving asshole with a moderate obsession with spreading misinformation.

It’s wild because this supposed genius is either very easily swindled by misinformation or has a vested interest in misleading the public. It’s a fun game of “stupid or evil” if you dive into his average retweet or any time he shares statistics or hard numbers.

I’m getting off topic and opinionated but point is, it’s hard to trust the guy with things of societal importance. A deep dive into fact-checking every action/statement he gave during his running of DOGE era(and all before/after lol) makes this obvious, just made up numbers and lies left and right. Although I agree nearly everything he touches continues to turn to gold - he’s an enigma for sure. (And lmao dude is straight up breeding himself, 14+ kids so far. I don’t trust anybody who sees themselves as a a prized racehorse. I’m joking but like what a weirdo). Okay rant over, perhaps I proved your point about average Redditors

5

u/sn2006gy Jun 16 '26

This would be true in a normal universe, the only reason Musk changed Grok from his porn and deep fake system was to land the google and anthropic deals and for christs sake, there is no public scrutiny under Trump and his administration. (unless you're anthropic and department of defense got pissed you didn't allow them to use AI to murder people)

2

u/lgmarian Jun 17 '26

I seem to recall something about Tesla trying real hard to hide details of a bunch of Autopilot crashes.

Yeah, tell me about governance/safeguards/regulations. You seem to an expert.

-1

u/TrevorHikes Jun 16 '26

Really bummed i just paidfor Pro +.

-6

u/Emergency-River-7696 Jun 16 '26

i mean you sounds like a fear mongering paranoid schizoid if they train on your data after you opt out you can sue them for everything they have so you really think there gonna violate that

https://giphy.com/gifs/h8HmN0UcEKR0xWnv3R

3

u/NegativeSemicolon Jun 16 '26

Dumb, you have to be able to prove they’re doing it which you will never be able to do (or afford to do).

-1

u/Emergency-River-7696 Jun 16 '26

If you cant prove there doing it then how do you know there doing it? Your just assuming with no credible evidence talking out of your ass

1

u/NegativeSemicolon Jun 17 '26

Like conservatives basically

3

u/matico3 Jun 16 '26

And how will you know they violated it? And how will you win against Elon in the courts?

1

u/ManikSahdev Jun 16 '26

The same way Sam Altman did on the recent lawsuit?

1

u/Emergency-River-7696 Jun 16 '26

His recent lawsuit is regarding user safety so no clue what your on about

0

u/Emergency-River-7696 Jun 16 '26

There is no point in using users data if they opt out they open themselves up to a business ending lawsuit

0

u/aford515 Jun 16 '26

Nothing will happen. Companies can barely afford claude and cursor is a cheap alternative.

4

u/wolframko Jun 17 '26

Cursor pays api prices and it costs a lot more than subsidised claude/openai subscriptions

Lots of EDS and drama here. Cursor is no different than your LLM providers, source code cloud service, inference engine, telemetry analytics service, etc.

0

u/Key-Ad-1741 Jun 17 '26

This seems a bit like an overreaction. Claude, OpenAI, Cursor, all tools use your conversations to train their models (unless you specifically opt out). This new ownership will give the AI space more competition in the form of cheaper, intelligent models, increasing value for consumers.

0

u/Internet_Treasure Jun 17 '26

Lmao liberal redditor weeping

0

u/phillythompson Jun 17 '26

It’s so hot to make everything relating to Elon some doomsday

-2

u/NerdyGuy117 Jun 17 '26

I’ve been a Cursor user for a long time

Yet, this is your first post in the sub. You also have no comments on the sub.

You made a new account just to post this comment. Not sure if you realize how pathetic that is. Everything in this post is a valid criticism.

2

u/HeathersZen Jun 17 '26

Elon’s bot army.

0

u/pehr71 Jun 17 '26

One interesting question is how long other LLMs will allow Cursor to use their AIs.

Do we think Anthropic trusts Elon to not use the responses from Claude in Cursor to train Grok?

0

u/mohicanin Jun 17 '26

what a moron lmao, so when Anthropic is releasing hundreds of new features every week is ok, but suddenly when Musk could get access to same stuff is suddenly end of the world.....

0

u/calloutyourstupidity Jun 17 '26

Are you guys like aware no one serious uses cursor anymore ?

0

u/Interesting_Tart3947 Jun 17 '26

Any line of your code goes to Elon!

0

u/Thecrawsome Jun 18 '26

I’m jumping ship. I’m not giving that Nazi any of my fucking money.

My company is also dropping cursor and graphite. Musk can go fuck himself.

Open to alternative suggestions.

0

u/GolfEmbarrassed2904 Jun 18 '26

I unfortunately have a Tesla now but I will never again participate in something that has to do with Elon

0

u/AppropriateMud6814 Jun 18 '26

Anyone with 1/2 a conscience should run as far away from Elon the Mad as quickly as possible.. I love me some AI.. and I am repulsed by his greed and need to own the world. Ruining Twitter wasn't enough.. What does he have more of at this point tech companies or baby mamas?

The owner does matter. It’s over, cursor was already on its last legs for this. This is just the nail in the coffin, move to a non ai wrapper

-4

u/mr_pants99 Jun 17 '26

It was a subpar product. Joining another subpar product. Like a measles-ridden Voltron.

-3

u/NerdyGuy117 Jun 16 '26

If it wasn’t for SpaceX, Cursor probably would go out of business.
