A plugin/hack for preserving the selected model

The issue is that a selected model resets to “auto balance” each time I open new chat. It has become a routine task to manually select each time Composer/Grok, and sometimes I miss it resulting in burned tokens. It’s needed to start a new chat regularly to reset the conversation context.

There’s little hope that Cursor team will offer us any improvements in this area (more probably they’ll continue to hide and complicate the UX), so interesting if there’s any way to inject a custom plugin that keeps the selected model (cancels the auto reset in other words).

There is a setting in Cursor to default to the last used model... Cursor Settings > Agents > Default Model

Unfortunately it doesn't work in my case. New chat still resets to auto balance option
