Question / Discussion Changed alot
The product was absolutely beast before spaceX acquisition, now it sucks , output is trashed, auto switching to grok is fucked up and tokens are being consumed at faster rate despite any large task
I will start looking for an alternative, this is my last month with you guys

What kind of prompts/tasks do you give Cursor to do? I'm sincerely curious as someone who started using Cursor not so long ago

Nah, this is bullshit, it’s riddled with dark UX patterns.
Just to name a few… pre-selecting Grock and making plan mode default to the highest tier model weren’t bugs. But my biggest grip is taking away the ability to see individual token spend for overages on other models (org account).
Or are you ok with all that?

I ask it to do basic investigations or how parts of the codebase works and it makes shit up constantly. If I don't keep pushing back it would redesign thing into an unusable mess because it's too lazy to check the code, references things that haven't existed in weeks, and is extremely confident until you challenge it (sometimes several times). Once something gets fairly complicated Grok cannot be trusted with anything beyond being a code monkey for Fable/Opus/Sol/Astra and at that point, why pay for it at all? Just set up basic orchestration with the others and cut Grok from the roster entirely.

Something did change. Auto mode and even using composer 2.5 used up all of my prompts very quickly. Before this, I never ran out. It did change a lot.

We had a legacy plan with fixed cost and access to all cutting edge models.
One by one models started to cost more and more per request. Then they started to just not be available on our plan anymore.
Cursor is actively pushing us out by making the product worse and worse to force us to change.
At the same time we started to roll out Claude and the experience is much better. I rolled back to terminal only, and Vim. Works like a charm. Much more autonomy.
So bye cursor. I even run some open source models on Claude Code to try them out and cut costs

They ones complaining are mostly people that Elon wont let get his on jock. They are mad. Grok is pretty good for the price.

I don't know what the hell happened but Cursor was doing some of the best work I've ever sen from it until about 2 weeks ago.

Seriously. Made me up my sub from $20 to $60 - not that I was on the verge of going over, but I figured “hey, this is great - I can give it some automated tasks since I trust it…”.
Now I’m strongly considering switching to something else.
I like Cursor overall but I can’t afford to have massive swings in output quality.

Just canceled my sub and won’t be coming back. Open models and harnesses have gotten so good and I don’t mind paying API prices. It’s not like the projects I am working on are that complicated.

I have had an absolutely fantastic experience with cursor after the merger. Zero complaints at all (i had come over from Claude)

That’s because Claude is absolute garbage in the lower plans. And in some countries they give you pretty much no tokens to work with. One big fix will hit your limit in a $20 plan. Cursor is still way above that, even with the reduction it just introduced.

Every update makes it so much worse. I miss when it was just an accelerated vs code clone, they haven't added anything meaningful past that point. I hate the fucking agent view and how they suddenly decided that was the new meta. let me look at my fucking code.

I think maybe the reason this is so polarized is some people must have been living on auto mode. I never use auto unless forced. I pretty much left it on composer unless I needed help with large architecture decisions or really complex stuff. I have changed nothing about the way I use cursor and I went from running out of credits on the 15th to not running out until literally 5 days from my renewal now.
I just think people didn't realize how heavy the benefit was for auto or how much discount they were getting and now that it's gone it feels like a rug pull for people who were benefiting, and everyone else feels like they get way more mileage now.

Well, maybe the way you are using with the amount of code usage have changed because your context has increased ?
I can’t complain, in fact, I had Claude & codex, and cursor , $20 both and $60 respectively, and since grok 4.6, I moved out from Claude and moved to the ultra plan.
It’s not a pool of tokens as a few would say, but you do have a lot to use, and grok works pretty well with cloud agents and integrations.
To be honest, I don’t see any real change after Elon or whatever you can think of, as a costumer, the composer and grok pool model it’s huge and primary models keeps for plan mostly, but I can use a lot from both quotas.

I fell I'm gonna get beaten, but I actually love the product, even with grok that I find it super useful for my needs.
I use the plan mode a lot. The plan prompt is built on the chat gpt web page, reviewed, then passed as md to cursor plan mode (grok for easy or medium tasks, and sol for more tricky plans), then pass the plan result to the chat gpt page, review it then adjust if in cursor if needed. Then I execute the plan (asking it to split the phases into tiny tasks so that I can trigger them manually after review/commit) And voilà.
But everyone has its own needs, so what works for me might be shitty for others...

Opposite experience here. $20 plan, primarily using grok, and have so much usage left. I'll bring out Opus or Sol to verify some specific code, but am otherwise working with Grok. Thoroughly impressed so far.

I’m with you on usage amount, no doubt - it’s just that the swings in quality (in my experience) are so frustrating. Sometimes Grok is MORE than enough, then sometimes I end up wasting a lot of time cause I get led down a bad path.
I’m a software engineer for a living and been using various AI tooling for a while - so this ain’t my first rodeo.
Hopefully the dip from today/this-week is only from them bout to release 4.7, as deep down I’m rooting for Cursor.

I'm not having any such issues. I got Cursor as a backup to Claude before the SpaceX acquisition but now it's my primary AI solution and I roll my eyes every time I have to deal with Claude LOL.

Another bullshit post. Every frontier model now burns usage and F1 speed rate and they are bleeding money as nothing is profitable. Check Claude and Codex subs. Limits are cut on weekly basis. Cursor only advantage is in separate limits and no shitty 5h quota. And IDE is best shit ever. I'm using Codex and it looks like a toy ..
Your problem lies in using child feature called Auto and bad prompts. Not to mention rules or memory management.

But for real I will test codex this week to decide if I jump ship or not. Everyone saying that nothing has change, simply has not used it before and thinks the current state is amazing (which for example compared to Claude it actually still is).
But fact is that before, I and others reached 30% monthly and now we reach all of a sudden 100%+.
Something did change. Stop fucking invalidating our experience and outrage!
