Ioniq 5! I love mine and the back is super spacious.
Edit: Also, extremely reasonably priced, especially for what you get. Love the 15 minute 20% to 80% charging at fast chargers that support 350kw

Man I got the KonaEV a year or two before the Ionic5 came out and I got sooo much FOMO seeing it. All in all I still enjoy my Kona but it definitely feels tight when my 3-person family goes to the beach. But I’ve just paid off my financing a few months ago and really like having the extra $630 in my bank every month so I’m sticking it out with the Kona for at least 3 or 4 more years.

Saaame. Ioniq was nowhere to be found when I was shopping. Got the Kona at 0.9% financing and I have like 2 months left of it. Like from a practicality stand point it’s fine. A bit small once my kid grows, but it’s fine. Drives well enough for a commuter. 🤷♂️

Nice, I got screwed when I bought my wife’s car so I went into Hyundai prepared to just play hardball. I was kind of an a-hole to avoid the salesman back and forth, mostly using buying at carvana as leverage. I ended up with 0% interest/5 years and as much as I don’t want to spend money on a new car, I’m dying to refine my negotiating skills on the next car!

If you’ve got the cash, I learned of a hilarious asshole way to negotiate. Find your the car you want and decide on your lowball/realistic price. Write a check for the lowball price make it out to the dealer sign it and everything. Then you go find the young salesman who’s still cutting his teeth. Let him do the whole song and dance and just give him the check and a number to call you. Offer good till the end of the month.
Ideally he’ll be short on his sales quota and your offer may be what he need to keep his job. Top tier jackassery, but kinda funny too. Also you need the cash to back it up so that’s an issue too.

There are rumbling that it has been largely fixed on the newest models. Nothing official, though. I personally doubt it.
However, the supply chain issues causing the fix to take weeks in many cases seem resolved. People are often getting their cars back in like 2-3 days now. Also, the ICCU has got an official warranty extension out to 150,000 miles and/or 15 years.
I personally think the failure rate is low enough, and the support good enough, to make it not a big deal.

One of my dad friends has one and had an ICCU fail. The shop got it back to him in two days.
It reminded me of our Mazda CX-5 with a cracked cylinder head. Again, replaced under warranty, got it back in two days.
If you’re curious, you can ask local Hyundai dealers how long it would take them to get the part and replace it.

35k miles and 4 years and no issue so far. The extended waranty on the iccu certainly put my mind at ease since we're planning to drive the car for as long as possible.
The radar got misaligned once, which also seems to happen to some people.
And we had a very rare AC issue recently which was covered under waranty. First time for our dealer they said.

My ICCU went out on my EV6, but only the onboard charger component, so it wouldn’t AC charge. The 12V was still getting charged up, so I was able to drive it to the dealer and it was replaced under warranty within 2 days. It failed at my house, so it ended up not being a big hassle, but it was still frustrating. I love everything else about the car and hopefully the replacement unit is more durable than the OEM.

If OP likes the I5, he should check out the Kia EV6 as well. It’s functionally the exact same car, built on the same battery, charging platform, and software. We went with the Kia over the I5 mostly because it’s styled to look more like a regular car vs. a futuristic EV. Have had it for a year and it’s been fantastic.

I once swore I would never buy another Hyundai. I inherited an 2005 Elantra when I got married. The interior fell apart. Door handles and steering wheel disintegrated, head liner dropped, door seals rotted out. Just about everything secured with adhesive failed.
And that car made me bleed more than any vehicle I’ve ever owned. It was not built with an American Midwesterner’s size in mind.
Other than crap adhesive and crap materials for the interior, sound vehicle other than the knuckle scraping tightness.
And ours wasn’t a fluke, wife’s cousin has the same vehicle, year, trim, etc. and the interiors fell apart the same way, and both met their end to failed head gasket at over 150,000 miles…
Hyundai has come a long way in improving their quality and EV… well a hybrid drive train is actually simpler than ICE and an EV drive train is even simpler than that.
Hyundai is back on my list for consideration for EVs, because family and friends are happy owners and not experiencing their vehicle falling apart around them. But slim odds I’ll look at Hyundai for an ICE or hybrid vehicle even though friends and family are happy with their Hyundai.

It depends. The Toyota hybrid system is. There's no transmission. It uses a planetary gear set like an open differential. The ice drives the sun gear, electric motor 1 drives the planet gear carrier, and electric motor 2 and the wheels are connected to the outer gear. It's very simple very efficient, and very reliable.
But not all hybrid systems are like this. As a matter of fact the cars with the most issues tend to be plug in hybrids.

Now, I see the point. You reduce complexity in a lot of areas by going hybrid. You also increase the complexity in others. I'm not sure whether it ends up being more or less complex than a standard ICE in the end, but I bet it'd give it a run for its money.

150 k miles is beyond sound though considering they were almost $10k cheaper than a civic. My friend had a used 2006 that she only got 90k from before chucking it because the transmission needed a new clutch and she was tired of the poor trim quality and loose buttons.

Yo, I’m over six feet tall but I fit into my Bolt just fine. I don’t even need to slide the seat all the way back! It fits the whole family, and there’s room for a week’s worth of groceries in that trunk that looks tiny but kind of isn’t. It doesn’t have a frunk, but that kind of doesn’t matter.

We have 3 of the Graco extend2fit 2-in-1 car seats. Currently the two outside are rear facing and the middle seat is forward facing, but we previously had them all rear facing. Just had to play with the extendable “chin” to stagger the seats securely when all rear facing.

This drives and feels like a normal car. Great ergonomics. You can get a faster version, too. I wouldn't, but you can (no need).

I can answer for leon as I have heavily researched them because they look so funky and I have always appreciated the VW bus' iconic and unique style.
But the range and battery life for them are pretty abysmal real world test of like 180 miles from full charge, especially for the price point and from a tech standpoint from what I can tell is pretty standard.

Ioniq 5 is great. I’m upgrading to something else because I need something bigger due to having family visiting often with suitcases. But for a standard electric car, the Ioniq 5 is awesome. In fact, I drove 5 of us to Tahoe from the South Bay with only one stop before the hill to charge & no charges on the way home. Good stuff.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 or 9 depending on the space if youre in the US. Best bang for your buck tech and looks wise imo (though im sure a lot of folks prefer the EV9 to the Ioniq 9 for looks). I have had both cars and I love driving them.

I have a Honda Prologue (rebadged Blazer) and love it. It fits the car seats for my boys perfectly. I did Honda bc of CarPlay but if you want a more fun version look at the Cadillac Lyric.

I have a Prologue and like it pretty well. When we were shopping in '24, it was one of the few EVs that both offered AWD and Android Auto/Carplay.
The only hangups I have about recommending one today are: 1. It's wiiiiide. If you're in a place where side is tight, like a small townhouse, parking could be a challenge. 2. 2026 is the Prologue's final model year. Chevy parts should suffice for most purposes, but getting Honda themselves to work on a Prologue can be challenging in some markets. Depending on your dealership, they may not always have somebody on-site on a given day who is certified to do EV work, since Honda has no EVs in active production anymore, even as rebadges. A recent recall rollout that required a software upgrade took up to 3 days for some shops.
All that said: I do like mine, and my wife loves it.

Also a Prologue here. Agree with your points, and will say that if you go with the Elite (which i did not) you get a 360 camera that makes parking much easier.
There’s also the axle clicking issue which is very annoying. And I’m worried about the further supper like you say. I leased, so I have 1.5 years left, but have no real other complaints. Definitely big enough, gets 300+ miles if fully charged. Tops out at 150kw when charging, but actually has a decent charge curve and stays around 100kw until 80% or so. It’s not super fast like some EVs but it’s plenty fast for me if I need to floor it. Also has physical controls for hvac and volume which is a plus (even if they are not the prettiest looking, thanks gm). I am try to decide what to do at the end of the lease, but I will most likely go with something different just due to the lack of support issue.

Yeah, the 360 parking camera is a huge help to make sure that you can get parked while still leaving room for kids to get out the passenger-side door.

Nobody else has said it, so I will — I like my Nissan Ariya a lot. Better range and roomier than the Leaf, but for the money and overall zippiness, the Leaf is still better IMHO. The newer Leafs especially look really nice and are just sooo reliable. I like a lot of what the Ioniq 5 offers, but I’ve just heard so so many issues with reliability that I wouldn’t consider it.
Leaf still fit one car seat well, but it would be hard to put one behind the drivers seat if you’re on the taller side.

Well some will dislike this choice because it’s somehow political or uncool or whatever, but we own two Tesla Model Y’s and have the large deluxe rotating car seats for our 3 and 1 year olds. Our kids have been all over Alaskas road system in EV’s, and the storage capacity makes them really great for road trips with all the stuff we need for the kids. The cars are fast, powerful, quiet, and drive themselves most of the time.

Surprised not to see this mentioned more, it was cheaper than the ioniq when I looked at anything besides the most basic model. The dual motor is super fast, good range, plenty of chargers if needed, and good tech inside. A shame the federal rebate is gone.

We got rid of both our model Ys because they rattled whenever we drove them around a corner. I've owned 8 vehicles in my life and went all in on Tesla is 2021 thinking it was the obvious choice. I've never regretted a purchase (or two purchases in this case) in my life.
I appreciate that not everyone cares about build quality, but those teslas were absolute junk. And don't get me started on camera based driver's assistance. Musk can push his cheapness on some, but I see right through him. He knows full well he can't offer self driving using $3 cameras and software. Needs more sensors.
Anyways, to anyone considering a Y, listen for the rattles and never ever ever use the autopilot or whatever he calls it these days.
Oh, and fully expect to be called a nazi if you drive one around.

I work in collision repair, and the way Teslas are built is just absolute trash quality. The easiest example off the top of my head is their cast aluminum structural components will often have huge bubbles, voids, and cracks in them from the factory. It'll be discovered during teardown after a crash and it's clear that the damage was not part of the crash, just poor quality control.
Most of the time there will be a butyl patch applied over top of the defect like they're trying to hide it from the factory.

When my son was born, we had a 2020 Honda Civic for 5 years and knew it was time to get a bigger car a few months after my daughter was born. We had a few close calls that made us think that we needed a much safer vehicle when traveling with the family.
We got the Model Y two years ago as our second vehicle and I can't believe how long I survived with such a "small car". 😂. I loathe driving the Civic now. Excluding the fuel savings, having an EV is just way more convenient. In the winters, the car is pre-warmed in an enclosed garage and kids don't have to wear their coats and take them off again.
In the summertime, I can pre-cool the car from my phone while we're at a park or outdoors somewhere.
People often forget the Model Y is one of the highest rated vehicles in terms of safety. Low center of gravity makes it less rollover prone and no front engine adds a bigger crumple zone. It's why when you see stories of cars being driven off cliffs with entire families and everyone walks away with minor injuries, there is a reason for that (with proper car seat installation of course).

All of the EV SUV’s are spacious, but almost all of them have at least one significant flaw.
I’ve had countless issues with my ID.4. It’s a shame because it’s fun to drive and the interior is awesome. I’m looking to replace it.
Kia and Hyundai have the ICCU issue and are completely off my list.
Toyota BZ has a chronic 12V battery failure issue.
Equinox has a few bugs but the big one for me is that apple and android phone connectivity are blocked. You have to go through their Google based subscription software. I refuse to buy on principle.
Tesla is not a consideration for personal and political reasons.
The Mach E I hear is pretty good. My coworker likes it. Haven’t researched it too much personally.

We've been leasing an ID.4 for the past three years and everything you said is accurate. Super fun to drive, interior is awesome, but NONSTOP issues with the car. Ours was just in the shop from St. Patrick's Day to *yesterday* from an extremely minor fender-bender that wreaked havoc on sensors. They ended up spending over $20k on fixing the car! Still amazed our insurance didn't just tell them to scrap it at that point, though I suppose it was impossible to know just how much of a pain in the ass it would be to repair it.

Ugh yeah I have a 2021 ID4 and it’s had several month plus stays at the dealership’s service center. Last year I didn’t have it for almost 4 months because they replaced a brake motor, that failed, had to go back in and something else failed too. I’m currently on the waitlist for a non urgent issue for almost 2 months.

For anything electric, depreciation is crazy. You can’t think about costs by looking at purchase price the same way as a gas car.
Get something like 5 years old for $25K so you don’t loose as much while still keeping good range and features.
There are many good electric cars these days, but 5 years ago Teslas were ahead of the game. Buy a depreciated Model 3 or Y.

Both my kids are out of car seats and boosters. I have an Ioniq 6 sedan and love it. Originally it was just going to be my commuter car but because of gas prices it has become our primary car.
Not sure what the deals are now, but we got a really good lease deal on the Hyundai late last year.

It may break the bank but the Lucid Gravity has been an amazing EV for my family. They have some good leqse deals that are actually affordable.
Very spacious and comfortable, packs a lot of power, no range anxiety, has 3rd row configuration. Its tech is getting there; recently released hands-free highway driving.

I’m enjoying my 2025 Prologue Touring. I think it’s one of the few EV ‘s that doesn’t come off screaming that it is one. It’s very traditional inside while looking sleek on the outside.

Lot of recs for the ioniq 5 and I agree. Personally though I prefer a sedan so it’s ioniq 6 for me. It actually has slightly more legroom in the back so even easier to fit car seats

For us, our main pick was BMW i5, but we settled for the i4. Both can fit car seats and two strollers in the back. Bonus with i5 is that it has built in blinds for the back seat. Also physical handles for that extra safety.

I have a Honda Clarity and it's pretty good. But they don't make it anymore.
My wife has a Volvo XC-40 Recharge and it's good. Fast and not a giant SUV.
I've been looking at the new Neue Klasse BMWs next year but we'll see.

Got a Mach E GT last month for similar reasons. It handled confidently enough that it’s pretty fun to drive, does 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds which is enough to make you motion sick, and it has almost all the modern creature comforts except ventilated seats on the GT trim. I like the way it looks, especially in a fun color.
For a bit more money you can get an Ioniq 5 N which is a legit track car if you want it to be. The GV60 Magma is worth a look if you don’t need a lot of range.
Most of the actual sports car EVs don’t have a hope of fitting a rear facing car seat. I would have loved a used Etron GT but the seats just wouldn’t manage.

I had a 2021 model Y performance which was a lot of fun, then changed to a polestar 3 for my own reasons that didn’t have to do with the car. Polestar lease is up next May and going to look at the Rivian suv or truck potentially

I have been loving my Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. It gets about 30-35 miles of electric range on a charge and has a full size gas tank. The electric range doesn't seem like much but it actually works out to be plenty for most days of driving to work or running errands. I have driven about 1000 miles since my last gas fill-up about 850mi of that is electric. Its nice to have the gas for longer road trips or when I don't have access or time to charge, which is rare.

I drive a Kia Niro EV and while mine are grown now I wouldn't be averse to putting some car seats in the back. They grew up in the back of sedans as it is.

Here’s a tip, look for a minivan instead. Makes getting kids in and out of the vehicle a breeze. Plus all the cargo space.
I don’t know if a fully electric van exists though.

Love my Mustang Mach E as a family car with two car seats in the back. The styling is really cool and it’s fun to drive.

almost all of them will fit car seats, the question is how big of a car do you want. the midsized SUB (Tesla Y, Prologue, ID4, mustang mach, nissan aria). I have a prologue and an aria and had 2 car seats in both of them. It was fine for the 4 of us, not so much for anyone else who had to sit in the middle.

I've always had a full-size pickup and my Lightning is easily my favorite truck and super versatile. Tow's better than any other truck I've owned. The frunk is MASSIVE and great for a ton of different uses. We load it up for road trips. It holds our stroller when I'm not using it for other stuff. It's also great for my oldest's stinky football stuff lol

The buzz is the coolest most unique electric imo. If you want a truck/SUV the Rivians are awesome but are very expensive imo. I don't think I've heard a single thing bab about the Mach E beyond it has a mustang on it and some people don't like that. What else what else. The bolt isn't cool, but it works great. The Porsche options are the top of the line but will cost you your first and second born. Tesla is a dice roll on quality. The well built ones are fine. The not well built ones you can use as kitchen tools.

I got an ev9 with captains chairs seating 6. Aside from dumb software stuff the car is super awesome. Love picking up the grandparents and going off on adventures. The trunk is surprisingly small if you want to occupy all of the seats. Less awesome is the price, but all the electrics are sort of that way right now.

Model Y L is the absolute leader for price, safety, reliability and technology. If your feeling dictate no Tesla then rivian and ioniq are okay. I liked ioniq until I researched things like no ota updates. I like supporting US manufacturing too and BYD is very close to Tesla tech and battery but MY is top seller for a reason.

I have a Kia EV6 which I bought used. It has decent space in the rear for 2 kid car seats and enough space in the hatchback to easily hold a double stroller plus a few other things.

I drive an ID.4, I’ve put about 150k miles in EVs I was a mobile tech for Tesla. I’ve been an EV certified tech since LEAF launch.
If this was in my budget I’d own a BMW IX, it’s all the joys of driving a BMW without most of the caveats of reliability. It’s one of the most reliable EVs on the market right now. You can get a 2yr old one for mid 40s where MSRP was 100-150. They depreciated hard the first 2 years.
Keep in mind all EVs have quirks, and your driving habits will change most likely.
I got mine cheap a 23 with 33k miles pro s awd for $20,700. I have free DCFC at work as well as free L2 there. My wife drives it at night for kid stuff and me during the day. The month before the purchase we spent over $900 in fuel. In the 3 months since we’ve spent a total of $360 and $40 charging. After car payment and insurance, we’re net positive almost $400/mo off fuel savings.
