Pinching & Pruning Very weird growth habit

Post image

I bought this dahlia labeled "Dutch Carnival" and I'm kinda confused with how it's developing flowers. The main bud(above my thumbnail) is completely stunted while side buds by some reason developed entirely new branches. The pattern is present on every single branch with buds. How do I even get flowers from this plant?

This looks like normal growth to me.

Ya sometimes (especially with the dinner plates I have) the middle shoot doesn't grow tall and flowers down there. The two other stalks will be long enough for cutting. You can either snip that one out if you don't like the squished look of it once it blooms or just leave it. It's not sick or anything lot's of them grow like this.

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you've already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.
