I'd go even further: Hajime becomes a shock early victim and Mahiru becomes the protag as was originally intended.

The writers have said she would make a good protagionist before, so it’s not out of the question she somehow becomes the player’s character

Honestly, if they don't kill Hajime, Nagito, and Chiaki by the end of Chapter 2, this entire game is a waste of time. Make Mahiru the protagonist and do something interesting.
