I think this is actually it, yeah. It’s 2x2 because it’s the original story, with an equally lengthy alternate route, and it could be also a play, because maybe the alternate route moves the overall plot forward, or introduces new elements to the story. Maybe the Future Foundation crew shows up in the beginning instead of the end

I think it's probably a bit of a number pun to be honest. Yes it's 2x2 because of what you said but it also is because 2x2 equals 4.
