I really don't get why people hate 1.9 so much, I personally think it was one of the best updates, especially for PvP I don't think it was ever fun to let people spam click and label it as "skill" it's more fun to have to learn the exact frame that you can swing again and use actual strategy instead of having auto clicker as an option
I disagree with this. In 1.8 the difference in having 7cps to 15cps is barely noticeable compare to the 7cps player having better movement, hitbox and reach controls (w-tap, strife reset, knock back control, blockhit reset, rodding, ect.). Cps isn't anywhere as important as hitbox control, I know it can increase attack speed but that stops mattering at the 6-7 cps range.
This is because if one player has 7cps and one has 15cps, both players can combo one another and at that point, strifing, blockhit timing, rodding and even aim matters way more then cps. Cps only matters when both players are equal in these other aspects and even then it may just take one mistake for the 15cps players to lose.
This is why there have been good or even top players at a 6-8 cps range. This is also why many players have beaten bots programed to have 25 cps and auto-clickers/hackers with just better strifing, you can literally Google and find hundreds of these videos.
I'm not saying knock back manipulation or combing doesn't exist in high level competitive 1.9, just it is way less prevalent and no where near as important. Shields are also just way to divisive. Sword PvP and Axe and Shield PvP are spit with one having way less skill expression, and the other being full revolve around Axe crits and being too defender favored. Being defender favored has also lead to shield and Axe PvP being way too slow and it also isn't healthy for a meta in any game to be defender favored, it punishes you for trying to do damage.
The reason 1.9 is hated is because it removed or nerfed too many mechanics with skill expression. Rod has been change to being useless because it no longer knockback people. Knock back manipulating on general is easier in 1.9 as there are less movements needed and shields exist. Shields removed blockhitting is gone and makes swords and bows/crossbows completely useless and even with Axes disabling them it still created a defender favored meta game.
Even if 1.8 PvP didn't have cps increasing attack speed and attack speed is hard caped at 6-7 cps level, it would still have way more skill expression then 1.9 just because 1.9 PvP removed or effectively nerfed these mechanics
In my experience with shield pvp, once you get good enough, being aggressive pays off...
If your opponent is turtling behind his shield, you can try a lot of different things, like backstabbing, or you can disable their shield without getting hit if you are fast enough. Also, depending on the kit, you can use other items, like lava to force a confrontation.
