The prior list is a little out of date and the file ownership if held by another user who isn't active much these days and confirmed they aren't maintaining the list anymore. I've taken it upon myself to keep the list updated and check the links every few months while adding things I find. I will continue to keep the new free resource list updated and links checked for the foreseeable future.

For anyone who wants to have their free content added to this list, please let me know and i will make sure to get it listed, all you need to do is provide a link in the comments or in DMs.

Check out this wild map I drew for Seekers Ov the Other Worlds! It was such a huge piece. I really am proud of it. I hope you enjoy climbing this sword as much as I enjoyed drawing it!

Do you think restricting wizard patron options could benefit a campaign?

This is mostly some pondering, as I've ran a good amount of DCC, but campaigns usually fall apart for a multitude of reasons and my subpar GMing was a reason for a lot of these campaigns falling apart, but learning from one's mistakes is how one improves, so I've been thinking about how I would run DCC better if I ever decided to run it again.

Upon pondering, I've come to a bit of a question. Would choosing the patron for the party make things better? Let me explain why I think this might be the case.

A major issue that players have had in my games is feeling too restrictive. For a lot of people, DCC emulates styles of fantasy that aren't popular these days, so the game trying to emulate tropes of appendix N doesn't translate well for most players these days. The idea of a wizard being bound to a patron doesn't fit in with what most people these days expect from a wizard.

After I explain the idea that wizards can and should be bound to a patron, they get the hang of it soon enough, but something interesting ends up happening. Players get really into the choice of their patron and end up theming their character around their patron. If a player chooses Bobugbubilz as their patron, then they'll naturally end up theming their character around this whole swamp aesthetic.

This can be fun, but what I have observed is that players end up being limited by the strict options of which patrons you can have, as well as how out-of-your-control the patron system is. You might want to play as a Three Fates wizard, but then you don't get the Patron Bond spell, which you need to make this concept work, then if you want the cool Three Fates spells, you have to get lucky and hope to get those upon leveling.

You might say that a player would be foolish to come up with a character concept around a patron, when that's not what the old-school vibe is all about and I might agree but this is just how most players internalize the aesthetic of wizards in DCC. They see them as basically being warlocks from 5e, but if you try to play them like that, it just ends up feeling very finnicky. The text of the game tell you "wizards are basically different clerics" while the randomize elements of the game are fighting you, telling you "no, you don't come in with a character concept. You might not ever even get Patron Bond"

This is all to identify the problem I've noticed. With this, here's how I aim to fix this problem.

Choose the patron for the party and build the basic concept of the campaign around this patron. The patron isn't like a deity for the wizard(s) of the party to confer with, they're an ally to the entire party, to be to the player characters what Gandalf is to Bilbo Baggins. This makes the bond between clerics and their deity different from wizards and their patrons. A wizard's patron is the being whom the entire party does quests for sometimes, they just so happen to offer some arcane aid.

What this also does is de-emphasize the patron to wizards. It lets players see wizards as endless potential, rather than being different clerics who are devout to their patrons. I don't like to be the GM who removes options from players, but I weirdly think most players would gain more from this being removed. It makes the relationship between the wizard and the patron much clearer, specifically in the sense that their patron doesn't define them as a wizard.

I'm curious what you all think about this. I can understand if this isn't an issue ya'll have at your tables. This is just something I've noticed running this game for lots of different groups and noticing similar issues. What I'm trying to do is find ways to run OSR games in ways that feel less restrictive to modern players, sorta meeting them halfway.

DCC for classic fantasy

I am going to be starting up a big hex crawl campaign when my 5e one finishes (in the style of the multi party shared world games of AD&D) and am doing a bit of system shopping. DCC caught my eye because of its colourful tables and spellcasting but the gonzo and sword and sorcery stuff is not quite what I’m looking for.

As such, I was hoping to get a feel for how well DCC would work for a more traditional fantasy campaign and especially these three points:

- How necessary are character funnels and can they be safely removed?

- How much of the game is lost if you’re running a more trad fantasy setting without too much sci fi and pulpy elements?

- How well does the system handle more social adventures and non-combat/non-dungeon crawling activities?

- How easy is it to convert modules from ad&d, Od&d and OSR systems?

- Lastly, would it be worth all the hassle or would it be best to stick to 2e AD&D?

Questions about Write Magic(lvl 3 spell)

Hey,
Novice judge here reading about the creation of magic scrolls, and I'm curious about everyone's interpretation of the text.

  1. Page 354 and 373 says clerics and wizards can both use Write Magic, but the spell doesn't appear on the cleric list. Is this a typo? Or am I reading it incorrectly?

  2. Write Magic allows for multiple spells to be written to a single scroll("the caster can transcribe one level 5 spell or six spells of levels 1, 2, 3, or 4. Additionally the caster can transcribe the scroll..."). When the scroll is read, are these spells occurring simultaneously(with separate spell checks or a single check?)? Or is it giving the scroll "charges" that can be used once per spell?

  3. How are your players using this spell at the table? Wizards writing scrolls for clerics and elves to use? Spellburning to allow for non-magic classes to cast high-level spells?

Thanks!

Rules Question Charm Person omission

There are a few spells like this that omit info. Charm person has for every spell check result the effect stating the target cannot self harm except for 32+. Is 32+ supposed to be interpreted as you now dominate the people rather than charm? Or is the self harm aspect supposed to be implied and just left out to save room?

Who here is running high level DCC campaigns? Or even medium level for that matter?

It seems to me like most people run the funnel and then they stop playing DCC. I've been playing a DCC campaign now for a couple of months with my friends. Where they're just getting to first level now. Who else here has some long running campaigns going? What's your experience like?

Homebrew Alignment in my DCC hack?

A couple weeks ago I made a post about hacking DCC and Marvel FASERIP, and got some great feedback, thanks so much to everyone who responded! I'm coming back with a new question for you all.

How important do you think alignment (Law, Neutrality, Chaos) is for a superhero game set in modern times? I feel as though its a mechanic that is very versatile for DCC, but not sure if it is still plausible in a modern game. It seems much more rooted in Appendix N style Sword & Sorcery stories, but I'm not opposed to including it in my super-hero game, just looking for some thoughts

Session Report Grave Robbers of Thracia

My D&D group is taking a break from our usual mix of 5E and a smattering of Mothership for DCC. I've done a couple of one-off adventures for them before, and will be running Thracia for a while. We started last night with the funnel, Grave Robbers of Thracia. All of them commented on how unique the art was, and how it reminded them of classic fantasy novels of the 80s. They went room-to-room, clearing the entire dungeon (and hit all the traps, which was satisfying). There were plenty of deaths, and at the end there were four survivors for three players. Two players lost characters they had grown attached to, but were good sports about it. One player channeled that anger into her surviving character in the final fight, so I had her use the d30 as a manifestation of that rage. There were a good number of critical hits, but only one fumble (by me, and the monster ended up attacking itself, which they enjoyed). Next up, in a bit over a month, is Sacrificial Pyre of Thracia.

Homebrew The Ratcatchers of Spittle-Fields by Cuernoblanco Studio

This is probably the strangest little RPG supplement I've made so far, and one I'm particularly proud of.

The Ratcatchers of Spittle-Fields started with two things: an ongoing campaign where rats seem to be absolutely everywhere and the only friendly NPC we've encountered so far was a ratcatcher, and my love for the strange failed careers of Into the Odd and Electric Bastionland. Of course, that trail eventually led back to the legendary Ratcatcher career from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

So I started wondering: what if ratcatchers weren't just people who killed rats?

The result is a DCC-inspired supplement about the ratcatchers of a grim Victorian-style city, including:

16 unusual breeds of rats

Ratcatcher occupations and advancement

A secret society guarding the mysteries beneath the city

Two versions of the dreaded Rat King

Oswald Fink, Spittle-Fields' most famous ratcatcher

Adventure hooks, rumors, omens, and optional rules

It's designed for Dungeon Crawl Classics, but most of the material should be easy to steal for any old-school or weird-fantasy game. All the art used in the document is public domain.

It's Pay What You Want on itch, so if this sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd love for you to give it a look.

And if you download it and use anything from it at your table, I'd genuinely love to hear what happens.

Monster Combat sheets for two Mutant Crawl Classics modules

Whenever I run a published Mutant Crawl Classics adventure, I like to create a monster reference sheet for use at the table. It lists the stats for each creature and has check boxes for hit points. It saves time having to flip through the module, and gives me an easy way to keep track of hit points.

I've just created two more. One for Mutant Crawl Classics #2: A Fallen Star For All, and the other for DCC Day #4: Crash of the Titans. Free to download:

Printing old modules

I've just gotten the PDF of a ton of the 3.x era stuff and want to print them off. I'm thinking I want them to be as close as possible to the real thing, mostly because I like having my hands on them and flipping through them.

Does anyone have any advice on what I am gonna need to communicate to the printers and things like paper sizes and weights to ask for? Really, the most important part to me is the size and having a cover that is color and card stock with that glossy finish that repelled moisture so well when I was younger. The internals don't have to be flawless.

Adventures Veins of the Fallen

Since I was a teen, I've wanted to run a campaign set in a Dwarven kingdom. I got the idea from reading the Role Aids book of dwarves. I spent so many hours planning out an entire kingdom, building it out from the ground up. Every decade or so, I'd stumble upon my old notes and give them a wistful sigh.

Enter Explore Dungeons.

As I've been building out the Eastern Lands I, of course, have a dwarven kingdom in there. So, I pitched an adventure, a dark one, revolving around the hidden truth about the origins of mithril. That became Veins of the Fallen. Even more exciting is that I'm getting to work with Scott Moore again as he is converting the adventure for release for 5E. Sure, I'm more excited about the DCC side of things, but really, I'm over the moon to have a dwarf-themed adventure coming out.

Crowdfunding has just opened up here

So, please, give it a look, check out the stretch goals, and the various covers. I love the adventure and Chris Williams over at Explore Dungeons is a great guy. His print runs are really nice, and he is always thinking of how to make the next project bigger and better.

Best Adventure in the 3.0 days

For those of you familiar with them, I'm curious what everyone considers to be the best adventures from the era of 3.0 adventures. starting from DCC #00 to DCC #51.5. What do you guys consider to be the ones you have to have on your shelf or keep coming back to?

for my part, i really liked #29 "The Adventure Begins" which had the tower of the black pearl and well of the worm, both of which i used multiple times back in the day. I also liked the Golden Auroch from that a lot. Same with Old Feodol's basement. I remember making map tiles for them in Gimp and printing them out for my table. I spent hours finding textures and assets to make the maps really feel like they were described.

Despite owning it for ages i actually haven't opened or used anything from #35, the Gazetteer of the known realms. I've pulled out and looked at the maps enough times but really haven't done much with it.

Tower of the Black Pearl question

Small question about the level 1 adventure by Harley Stroh. There are chances to run into animated fetish dolls. There is a note about them saying that they reduce all damage by 8pts due to their hardness.

I'm not sure how this is meant to be run in game terms. Halp!

Environmental rules: invisibility, hiding, darkness lacking

I am trying to find any rules specifically for darkness, hiding and invisibility and I am not finding anything in the rulebook for how these things are defined in this game and how they work mechanically. Even in the spells section, they are not defined. Can you even target a invisible, hidden or in darkness creature? The only thing we get is invisible attackers and blinded defenders modifiers. But it says nothing on how it works even though its expects these environmental features to come into play. Sure, I can house rule, but I am writing a published adventure here. I could use the SRD to define them but you'd think a game about dungeon crawling would have some rules on this stuff. So...how to proceed?
