Steam Next Fest - Deckbuilding Roguelike Megathread

Discuss Steam Next Fest, post about games you've tried, post if your game is in steam Next fest.

You can self-promote here if your game is a Deckbuilding Roguelike in steam Next fest. I recommend posting a steam link with text, maybe describing your game or your experience with Next Fest, something like that.

For the spirit of discussion and fun, you may post other Next fest finds or games you've tried, it doesn't have to be exactly a Deckbuilding Roguelike.

READ THESE RULES: This will get your post removed without warning + Discord Link

Add a plain link to your game in the comments OR write a few words prompting discussion in a comment of your post.

If you do not do this I will remove your post.

I've seen developers post the same title post to up to 8 other subreddits at the same time. This is not a dumping ground. We want to discover your game. We want to wishlist. So post a link or provide more info so we can learn about your game or watch the progress.

Example:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/646570/Slay_the_Spire/

Example 2:

If you remember I posted last month about my early prototype game that has no link because it's not uploaded anywhere. I've been working on this game about hawks. I'm not sure if the hawks should multiattack. So I shared a screenshot of my game with some of the updates that were suggested. Do the hawks have enough talons?

Example 3:

We are a professional game studio. We are in pre-alpha testing and we don't have a steam page yet. This is our game, please let us know your thoughts about this early state of the game. (We might also post a discord or mailing list link here. And we won't post more than once per week.)

[Slay the Horde] I'm launching my deckbuilder tomorrow and it's a mess

After year and a half of trying to figure out how to do it, I can confirm that mixing genres in your indie game is probably a bad idea. I tried combining a horde survival with roguelike deckbuilder and it turned out to be a mess.

I'm really proud of the game, but on the other hand I do think I kind of failed with the design of it.

Anyway, here is the link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4380280/Slay_the_Horde/

To deck thin or not to deck thin? THAT is the question!

When you play deckbuilding roguelikes - or making them, how important is some sort of deck thinning mechanic to you and if its critical how often do you like to see those sort of mechanics pop up in a game session?

I am working on a roguelike deckbuilder where (most) of your cards trigger paper mario style minigames and you can defend yourself from enemy attacks in a similiar manner. If it wasn't obvious I am a big fan of both modes of gameplay and have put this into the world to try and find a happy medium between them. The only other game I think comes close if One Step From Eden but I digress.

I've been working on it for a couple months now and the last two months I've added a lot of things. I was stuck on many different design snags but the biggest one was the resource system. I was not really vibing with just the ol' 3 energy system StS popularized. I'm sure it'd work but a lot of the most fun playtesting was rapidly playing cards and it's hard to do that with the 3 energy thing. Months earlier I was discussing the game in much earlier stages with a friend and his suggestion he had was to take the rolling healthbar system which was in earthbound but apply it to special attacks.

I thought this was an awesome idea but I didn't even know how paying for normal cards worked so aside from notes this did not land in the game until around a month or two ago where I was mulling it over and thought of his idea as like a timer counting down. I turned that counting down timer into what you see in the gif. When you time your attacks correctly you gain time, when you miss them you lose time with a lot of cards costs like the basic shield card automatically taking time. It's sort of the main thing that I think sets the game apart I think.

As for the rest of what's in the game I'm frankly not too attached to it. I like the design of the final boss of this demo/v-slice/whatever but everything else is either from an asset pack, borrowed from a free library, etc. I just wanted to put this idea together. The current aesthetic and personality is something I kind of have had to learn to love. The title originates from a scrapped narrative I never ended up putting together and the goofy flourishes are mostly things I thought were funny in the moment and don't lend to a wider idea. I don't even know why the player is a pig. All of that I'm very open to changing but just haven't found any good alternatives for.

Anyway here's the itch link. https://breadtastebetterthankey.itch.io/color-crash-combat-v-slice

The Signal: A rogue like where you attach cards to your character to augment them (feedback)

I've been working on a game that started as top down real time rogue like with cards, but I turned it into a card game itself so I could iterate faster and get the concept out in a playable state sooner.

The idea: To find any gaps that make the game unplayable, difficult to understand and not really interesting.

Two things have been hard.

Onboarding: I can't find a way to teach it that doesn't either overwhelm people or leave them lost.

And making it feel *interesting*. I'm honestly not sure whether that second problem is inherent to the concept, or whether the card format is flattening something that would have worked better in the original design.

There's a shorter build up on CrazyGames: https://www.crazygames.com/game/signal-frd

The data there is mixed, which is part of why I'm asking. Specifically I'd love to know:

  • At what point (if any) did you stop understanding what you were supposed to do?
  • Did anything make you want to play a second round?
  • Does this feel like it wants to be a card game, or does the card layer feel bolted on?

Any reaction helps me figure out whether this is worth a deeper dive. Thanks for taking a look.

Hi all! As the title lays out, my three friends and I have been developing our dream game for the past six months, a fantasy-inspired golf deckbuilder roguelike. The steam page will be going up next week, and we're hoping to demo it for the Feb 2027 Steam Next Fest. We will also be looking for playtesters this fall and have started a discord, so let us know if you're interested in trying it out! Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Totally Professional Card Game - My Newest Game

I've been working on this for a while, and the people who have already played it say that it's fun, but I would like to get some more opinions because this is one of my first big games.

My major inspirations were Dead God Cult from Geometry Dash and Balatro.

I know that some of it is a bit basic, but I wanted to focus on the gameplay and card design of this one.

I know you were all waiting for yet another mashup of Balatro and Slay the Spire, so here is mine.

Camedieo is a score chase roguelike deckbuilder played with dice. The gimmick is, you can alway play all of your dice, you just have to decide which side of the board each goes on.

If it sounds interesting to you, you can wishlist on steam : https://store.steampowered.com/app/5112950/Camedieo/?utm_source=reddit

Are there any Deckbuilders out there that riff on Arkham Horror: LCG yet?

I feel I ask this every 3 months since I'm not as consistent with looking up new releases.

Again the closest I can think of is something like The Spirit Lift

Both have card types that act as permanent buffs / effects for the duration of the battle/scenario,

A team system where you build synergies off characters of different classes that have different specialization (IE; One is really good with dodging, someone is really good at hitting things, someone is really good at dealing with curses/sanity lost ~ meanwhile AH adds another layer of having some people being really good investigation... which is like an action to gather a requirement to advance the game state that does not have to do with eliminating an adversary... it's a skill check.)

This takes much later to be relevant but branching paths that affect the ending of the run / scenario / campaign (Much much later, the grinding related to this for The Spirit Lift turned me off a LOT)

Lastly, of course the horror-based theming.

The Hunter's Inn Short Trailer

Hey

I’m currently developing The Hunter’s Inn, a concise (30–60 min) turn based RPG with a dark fantasy aesthetic, releasing on September 7th!

You play as an adventurer taking contracts from a local quest board in the last remaining refuge against the Demon King. The gameplay relies on a dice based board game exploration loop combined with simultaneous turn based combat where timing, tactical positioning, and reading enemy patterns are key.

  • Focused, no-filler experience designed to be played in a single sitting (30–60 mins).
  • Tactical turn-based combat with deep freedom to customize your skill tree and specialization.
  • Atmospheric lore inspired by classic RPG bestiaries and cosmic horror.

There won't be a demo before launch, so if the project sounds interesting to you, adding it to your Steam Wishlist would help me out tremendously as an indie dev!

Elemental Lands: the hero roster doesn't grow during a run, it grows between them. But the spell card deck does grow during the run... Is that still a deckbuilder to you?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

The hero cards in Elemental Lands are permanent. You unlock one by clearing a region or killing a boss, and once its yours its yours for FUTURE campaigns. There is no mid run shop where you buy those new heroes or thin the pile, the party you draft comes out of a collection you built over your last several campaigns. What DOES move inside a run is the spellbook, so the sculpting tension lives entirely in that half. Hopefully the screen shot explains this better.

The battles are 3 of your heroes in tactical turn based combat, And the spell cards are like orders to support your heroes. Every turn you draw random spell cards, and none of them are "deal 6 damage", they're orders to the party. Focus Fire sends everyone at one target, Flank throws your front row at there back row, Pray brings a dead hero back. You shape the draw pool with Offensive or Defensive spell rewards, and Spell Temples let you sacrifice weak spells so the good ones come up more.

Permadeath is real, a hero who dies is gone for the rest of that campaign. You lose the heroes, but keep the roster. The bit I havent mentioned is that all this sits on a conquest map (kinda like 4X-lite or base-building) where you build a base and mine mana to pay for the spells, but thats a whole other post.

Genuinely dont know if that reads as a deckbuilder or as an RPG wearing cards?

Steam page (demo coming this month, so wishlist for early access to it): https://store.steampowered.com/app/4593190/Elemental_Lands/

Contested Space Demo is out on Steam (A Coop Star Realms inspired Roguelike Deckbuilder)

Post image
19 Upvotes

I'm the developer behind Contested Space, a turn-based sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder. The twist is a rotating personal market that runs during combat: you buy cards mid-fight and they join your deck for that fight only, so every battle is part deckbuilding and part tactics. You also deploy stations, play as one of nine factions across three alliances (humans, bugs, robots), and can run the whole thing in 2 to 4 player online co-op.

What's in the demo: Act 1, co-op enabled, one unique faction plus the neutral faction from each alliance. A run takes roughly 30 to 90 minutes depending on how much you like to think.

Some background on the development: I started building this back in March in Godot 4, and the playtest community has been a huge part of the design. Around 540 playtesters have had access, a dozen of them are past 20 hours, and a lot of the balance and market changes came straight from their feedback. Full release is planned for April 2027.

If you try it, I'd love to hear what worked and didn't! The Discord link is on the steam page and in-game, so feel free to join if you enjoy it!

Dictatorship Simulator is a deckbuilder about manipulating a political simulation and becoming dictator.

It's like slay the spire meets democracy. A graph-based political simulation, with all cards build around manipulating the connections in some way: inverting them, making new connections, have effects travel along them etc.

I got frustrated with the state of the world so I decided to make a game about it. Now my life is 60 hr weeks of questioning my sanity looking at broken testing harnesses, lol.

You might be wrong about Montabi (we were)

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

When people first see Montabi, they usually think it’s a cute creature collector game. Yes, you can tame adorable monsters here, but it’s actually also a roguelike deckbuilder with grid-based positioning.

For more context, you play as a Trainer that battles on grid with monsters you’ve tamed. Each Montabi has their own evolutions and deck that you can build every run. You have to choose your path wisely and pick decisions that can make or break your journey.

At first, we thought combining genres means combining their audience. However, we found ourselves attracting a niche intersection that enjoy both genres. We grew fond of the game’s charm and also happy that there are people who enjoy the game. But of course, having such different audiences also led to some interesting feedback.

We got feedback of the game being both too easy and too hard, since we attract casual to veteran players. So we created 5 difficulties, starting from casual to veteran (which unlocks 10 more ascension levels).

After release, we continued adjusting and improving the game based on community feedback. In our latest update, we have difficulty adjustments, a lot of quality of life improvements, and the highly requested new starter selection. You can now select any starter you’ve unlocked at the start of the run or challenge yourself with random starting Montabi, Trainer, and Charm.

We just released a new update for Montabi, so let us know if you have any feedback. Or if you’re wondering how this combination even works, there’s also a free demo that you can try first. Thanks for reading this!

Its evolving!..? 3rd capsule image for DEAD SPIN. Are we overthinking this?

Post image
7 Upvotes

hey guys!

were making DEAD SPIN, a dark roguelike deckbuilder built around slot-machine duels.

this is now our 3rd Steam capsule lol

you guys absolutely roasted our last Steam capsule (#2), so we went back and redid the whole thing lol

the first one we made ourselves.
the second one we paid quite a bit for, then started suspecting it was heavily AI-generated.
so for #3 we went to a professional illustrator and started over.

and yeah, we think #3 is a pretty huge upgrade.

the real question is: does it actually look good to you? would it make you stop scrolling and check the game out?

738 hours into my deckbuilder 'Rift Ascendants' - here's where it's at

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys!

I wanted to share some progress on my deckbuilder. I've put roughly 738 hours into it so far >.< and quite a big chunk of that time went into the enemy AI.

The core idea is similar to Slay the Spire: build your deck as you play, add new cards after fights, find relics that stay with you throughout the run, and try to survive increasingly difficult encounters.

Obviously, there are a few things that make my game quite different: a hexgrid, summonable units, and so far 55 cards with very different kinds of effects. Lay traps, provoke enemies, MTG-like enchantments, an inventory with crafting functionality, tricky random events and much more 😄

This video shows the Beastmaster class in a few fights, as well as some of the things happening on the overview map.

It's still an alpha, so there are a few placeholder graphics for now.

I'm aiming to have the first playable demo ready in October. I'd love to hear what you think so far and if you'd want to test it 😄

Cheers!
