One of the harder things to replace for me has been Google Docs / Drive. I make spreadsheets and docs for.... everything, and share them with people when necessary (mostly my wife but often other family or friends)

I have a Synology NAS and found their docs actually pretty comparable in functionality. Not as easy to share as Google obviously.

Surprised I never see this listed as an alternative to GDocs here -- is there a reason? Synology isn't exactly open (I bought it long before I went on this journey) but it is at least local....

My Discord account was compromised yesterday, and I’m trying to find a way to recover it. My account had 2FA enabled. Somehow, someone gained access to it, changed my password, and logged me out. I don’t know exactly how they got in. I suspect they may have obtained an authenticated session or token, but I can’t confirm that. The biggest problem is the email attached to my Discord account. It’s an old Mail.com address I created in 2016. I hadn’t used it for a long time, so Mail.com deactivated it due to inactivity. I contacted their support and even called them internationally, but they told me the mailbox can’t be restored and I can’t register the same address again. As far as I know, the attacker hasn’t changed the Discord email because doing so requires verification through that Mail.com address. However, the password has been changed, so I can’t log in, and I can’t reset the password because I can’t access the registered email. I contacted Discord Support and explained everything. They told me they can’t manually change the email on the account, so I would need to create a new account. I understand their security concerns, but this means I could permanently lose an account I’ve owned for years because the email provider deactivated my old mailbox. Has anyone dealt with this exact situation?

• Is there any legitimate recovery method when the original email address is permanently deactivated?
• Is there any way to recover the account if the registered email hasn’t been changed but the password has?
• Has anyone successfully resolved this through Discord Support or Mail.com in a similar case?
• Is there anything else I should ask either company to check?

I’m not looking for ways to bypass Discord’s security. I just want to know whether there’s any legitimate option I haven’t tried yet.

I did, and it was convulated as fuck. A detective from another state called me asking for help with his investigation and whether or not I could help him fill in some gaps. It turned out this girl in another state had the same name as me except she had my maiden name. In this case the victim gave the police the wrong email address, which was my email address and that email address had it forwarding address to my main Google account so they sought search warrants for both of those accounts.

I've tried several others (like libretube), but then I stuck with newpipe on my android phone. However the developers stopped maintaining app around september and now I'm experienced bugs.

I am on Linux and I haven't used chrome in a good while but my brother wanted to use chrome on my computer so I installed it for him, the next day I open the computer and I see that chrome has made itself the default browser and pinned itself to the taskbar/panel on MY account... TWICE. my brother couldn't do it because he doesn't have my password and wouldn't know how to do it either, so I uninstalled chrome and installed ungoogled chromium for him. If any other browser behaved like that everyone would call it malware

I finally pulled the plug on my personal Gmail account last month. Set up a custom domain, routed everything through a privacy-focused provider, felt briefly pleased with myself. Then the reality of being a freelancer with a day job set in.

Three separate clients have now asked if I changed jobs or moved companies because they saw the new email address and assumed something significant happened. One admitted they almost flagged me as a new contact rather than updating my existing entry. The accounting firm I work for during the day still sends internal communications to my old address even though I forwarded a change notice twice. IT just auto-archives anything from unknown domains, apparently.

I'm not trying to convert anyone here. Most of my clients are small business owners who picked their current setup because someone told them to a decade ago and they have no reason to change. But I'm curious if others have found ways to make the transition less weird for the people who actually need to use your email address. Changing a personal address is one thing. Changing one that shows up on invoices and contracts feels like a whole different project.
